The downturn in trade is something which WILL change,

Said with some bravado....

They going to rescind the smoking ban?

Hang all the wanna-be DJ's with downloaded music on their computer??

Go through with restricting the prices that Supermarkets sell quantities of alcohol to the general public(whatever happened to that)??

I'll not be encouraging my boys to take it up as a career:bang:

I'm sure we've done this one before on here

I don't believe the smoking ban has had any effect whatsoever on the wedding or corporate sector, or for that matter any worthwhile part of the mobile disco market.

If it has stopped people going out to grotty, (formerly smoke-filled) dives of pubs, where £60 sid was in his element and fights were pretty much a guaranteed feature of Friday & Saturday nights, then surely that can only be a good thing.... if they haven't already done so, they'll soon close up and be turned into drive through fast food restaurants or knocked down for residential redevelopment.

Here we go again.......You'd be surprised how many Pub DJ's there are on here and its easy to offend.....So I would be careful before you start labelling them as not worthwhile.

Furthermore ....I think most of them would rather do thier business in a fairly busy pub than entertaining 10 people from HSBC....SEE RECENT THREAD:bang:

Please see.....should be a fun-gig.............

Depends on your situation. In most cases the pub wouldn't be paying as much, so I'd sooner have a crap night than a great one which didn't earn me enough to pay the bills.

But then again....

(Possibly another topic?)

It's those 'pub gigs' that fill in the gaps next to the private bookings.
It's also those 'pub gigs' that get the name about and also extra private bookings at full price.

By the way....I'm not sure what some other pubs pay but I get pretty decent money. It may be different where I am but my 'pub gigs' aren't a case of the pub saying "Oh, shall we have a Disco this week?" and hoping that the Disco pulls in people. They put me on because I DO pull in people and it's always packed out when I play because of the varied nights I do and the people know that they will get an eclectic, varied mix of music that is never the same.

£60.00 Sid? No, I'm not one of those at all although there are some around my way and they are in places where it's dead and they are trying to get people in....but they don't!

Ok lets analyze this paragraph and personalize it...

I am primarily a Pub/Club DJ.

My name is not Sid....its Martin.I do not charge £60 and I haven't seen one single fight on a Friday or Saturday this year....and i've worked most of them.Obviously the Pubs are not smoke filled anymore ....because of the smoking ban.I am fully legit....Pat tested,PLI,TAX and NI...etc etc...so why are you critiscizing my end of the market when I haven't had a swipe at yours.

Because of my exposure in these places I get bookings in some of the nicest places you could wish to work in....but its normally because people have seen me working in the flesh rather than on the gallery of a website;)

You said there what I was trying to say so thanks!
At the end of the day - Those gigs are just as good as adverts because people get to see what we do in the flesh (as you said).

Danno - Yes, I agree with you too...but, my 'pub gigs' are very flexible. Believe it or not (and I'm no ego maniac), they know I am very busy and (if you like..) sought after. If I have a private booking come in and it's on a date that I have a 'pub gig', they have no problem with me doing the private booking for more money and swapping the date to when I am free. They are glad to have me because I get the tills ringing for them. It works both ways, when I am there I am advertising myself as well as working and earning.

If the private bookings are thin on the ground (they're not) then the 'pub gigs' help fill the gaps and they would give me more too more likely. I'm not using them, they're not using me...it's all about the money at the end of the day and paying the bills. I earn more if I do a private booking, the pub does better when I am there.

(even with my budget/beginner/entry level Pioneer, Denon, Crown and JBL equipment!! ;) ;) )

I'm not talking about taking cheaper gigs or having a pub res to fill the quiet nights, I'm on about Martin prefering to play to a packed out pub, than do a hotel booking for 10 people. If all was equal, I would agree, but the likelyhood is the pub would be paying less, in which case I know which gig I'd rather do, regardless of the enjoyment factor.

Conveniently forgetting to take off expenses... based on my profit margin* that would earn me circa £12-13K before tax, assuming I took no holidays throught the whole year.

*which, along with my quality of life, would probably decrease if I was working 5 nights a week.

Hope I can find these markets then, cos round here it's been grim. Really grim. My social club, whic last year gave me at least one booking a month, and often more, has struggled with one a year!

Added to which, I've had loads of phone calls where I've been too expensive ( Me? Expensive?   ) and you begin to see why I'm looking for other markets. :(

i think sometimes we forget what it is like in the real world,
first i want to agree with danno it is better todo 3 gigs a week at £250 then 6 at £150, if i was full time i would aim for the 3 at 250 then fill another night with a residency at a lot lower rate(if work was not coming in i would take whatever was available to get money in).
my son is 19 he has done 2 years at college, passed he driving test owns a nice car and now has an apprenticeship and most importanly has money in the bank and owes no one anything, all of which is down to dj'ing, when he goes out doing the disco he picks up more than he does doing the 40 hrs apprenticeship(thats most occasions not every). in an ideal world we would all be earning a lot more but so would the poor guy who is working 60+ hrs a week at mcdonalds and really only just scrapping by. we are a lot better off doing this then we sometimes appreciate:)

I do everything from pubs to real high end Marquee stuff, so don't see what the issue is.

I prefer doing the top end stuff as it pays better and is generally an easier night, but you fill the gaps with whatever is going.

In the words of Brian "You are all different" - "I'm not" - Some of you are running businesses and some of us are pottering around doing it as a hobby, albeit in a professional way.
