Djs are money grabbers

Si advises that one of our contacts called him to say a PA company is looking for a DJ tonight as their one let them down.

Si's out, but I'm free so I could probably help them out. So I called the PA company to get all the details.

Got the details and it works out to be like this:

- Will be leaving Birmingham at 3pm as it is 2 hour drive
- PA Company to set everything up and sound check by 19:30
- DJ from 19:30 to 21:30 (2hr)
- Band on for 30 minutes
- DJ from 22:00 to 22:45 (45 min)
- Band on for another 30 minutes
- DJ from 23:30 to 01:00 (1hr 30 mins)
- Gear to be packed down
- Return back to Birmingham approx 03:00

= Approx out for 12 hours (including traveling time)

They only want to pay £100, I was straight up with him and said £100 is not enough for the time as I am out for 12 hours. (Approx 4.5 hours DJi'ng)

Before I could even try negotiate anything him he said "all you DJs are money grabbers".

I would have settled for £150 if he had talked it through with me; but after that comment I saved myself the hassle in not entertaining any further.

Comparing this to pub rate of £100 till 00:30 and would be starting at 19:30 (5 hours DJ'ing); paying me £150 he still getting a reduce rate compared to my normal rate.

Si called to tell that he has already left a message with our contact telling that I'm a money grabbing DJ. He ain't getting Tiesto, but not a cowboy either.

Given the above details would you do this for £100?

Hmmmmmmm, tricky one. I wonder if it will ever occur to folks that if you pay a pittance, then folk are inclined to accept better offers? ( I know nobody on here would of course )

Maybe the poor money is why their original guy let them down in the first place.

I would do it to help them out as their DJ let them down, but it would be one off; if it happened again they pay up on they are on their own.

I would agree with you, but it could lead on to future work. He is the one that blew it by saying that comment. He could have just said "sorry it is not within our budget".

I have found out later on today that the PA company is only getting £150 for their time. So, if he is only getting £150 and he had a DJ (before they let him down), how much was he paying this DJ?

Guess he is upset on two fronts

1. His DJ let him down (on day of the event)
2. A replacement DJ is going to cost him an arm and leg.

There is a DJ on every street corner - especially this time of year - so with such a small budget surely they would find someone closer ??

I wouldn't drive 2 hours to a gig. Just not worth it. 2 hours at average 50 mph, which allows for mix of Motorway and A road, is 100 miles (me good at maths). I would need a serious incentive to do a 200 mile round trip for a gig.

You have a point! I did a gig in brighton the other day and i almost fell asleep! I have one in exeter next year and they are paying for £70 B&B and £50 petrol. im going with my girlfriend and dogs for the weekend, should be fun :D

You want to try a Mitubishi Shogun - unless you have shares in BP and see the outlay back in dividends you need to think seriously about your mileage. If priced correctly we will do a reasonable trip, but 200 miles is a long way to do a gig (and I drive a lot in the day job, so used to it).

Just back from an amazing gig in Uttoxeter and i have read this thread with amazement was the £100 a deposit.
He was right about one thing i am a money grabber but im also professional reliable punctual smart dressed top notch dj who yes gets payed a lot for what i do because the people who i work for appreciate quality.
Any fool can work for very little.

Then he has seriously undercharged and can't be a very professional company. You keep saying PA company. Do you mean PR company? The last PR company that I worked for had an entertainment budget of £5000 (mind you that included venue hire, buffet, close-up magician, band and disco) but you see where I'm coming from. Good PR companies don't deal with small change (and their regular DJs don't let them down, either!).

I had a call this morning that actually woke me up. "Hi, are you available this evening as we have been let down by a DJ?". I asked the usual questions and in the end found out that they have a budget of £125.00. I said £300.00 and the bloke said "You must be joking!".

I've said that if they are still stuck later then to give me a call but I'd need to know by 4pm at the latest. I know they won't call back and they will either get some monkey to do it or they'll go without just for the sake of a few quid. Oh well, I'll be down the pub playing darts and having a few beers with my mates.

Not a chance I would cover a gig like this for that price. we would definately be into the £200's for that long. I moan if I have to more than 6 hours with travelling let alone 12! ;-)

Just checked and yeah DJ; plus PAT testing as well (Jack of all trades, master of none)

Based in my area, I have never head of the bloke on both fronts DJ and PA company (he did say he had being doing for 40 years). I guess after 40 years things seem to never moved on.

It was 21-12-09 on a Monday so i thought with it being so close to xmas and all that I 'd charge my saturday rate I found out that they got someone for 60 quid to do it I only quoted 150.00 so what I did for them earlier in the year counted for nixie:bang:

£100 would be fine for a local pub gig, it is money that you wouldn't have otherwise had, but not for a serious job, that involved reasonable travelling time.

Rob, with your overheads for each gig being £100, you would have wanted to charge £101 perhaps :p


I must admit though, a few years ago when I saw a DJ advertising £500/£600 for a wedding, it did take me by surprise, but I then learnt that, that was obviously the going rate for civil receptions these days.
