Hello all,

I'll be looking to "upgrade" a couple of areas of my rig in the new year. One of which is to purchase my own sub. I've been looking at a few including the DB Sub 15 (http://www.decks.co.uk/products/db_technologies/sub_15), the Cerwin Vega CVA 115 (http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR270685) and the RCF Art 705 AS (http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR289805).

I've heard a couple of DJs use the Mackie SRM450s with the DB Sub 15, but I am interested to hear your opinions on the Subs listed above. Obviously, there is a fair price difference between the RCF and the DB, so from that perspective the DB is a more viable option.

I don't usually do 'huge' venues. The biggest so far has been a 300 person capacity school hall, so 1 sub would be fine.

RCF all the way! Actually the DB is pretty good too, if that's the one Tom uses, as I heard it coupled with 450s mk2 at Seda.

I have heard great feedback about the RCF, but it has to be said - it's a considerable difference price wise between the RCF & the DB, although if the RCF was really that much better then I'd pay the extra cash.

Yeah, I believe Tom does use the DB Sub 15. I've heard Spin Mobile Disco's Sub 15, and it does sound great.

Sorry, I should have said on my original post that i'm using SRM450 Mk1's as my tops, and no, they haven't blown up yet ;) :p

Its worth mentioning Ollie that the RCF weighs in at 10kilos heavier than the DB sub 15. The main reason I chose the DB in the first place.

1 DB sub wont be enough for a 300 capacity school hall ollie especially if you playing bass heavy music, it will sound ok near you but will get lost with that number of people, you would definetely need 2.

My only 'must haves' for buying a sub is that it's loud, so it can be used with 2 mackies without being overpowered, not ridiculously heavy and that it's powerful enough that I only need to buy one. As space in the house & in the car is becoming less and less!

Providing i'm back in on the 10th, could I come and have a listen to your sub again Matt? Thanks.

You would get away with 1 for most venues around the same size as the room you were in the other night when I met you, larger you'd need 2

In all seriousness, when I went for a new sub I went into Sapphires (Decks) and had a listen to them all side by side etc and when you did that you can hear how superior the sound of the RCF was against the mackies and whatever else was in there (can't remember off the top of my head).

Yep, that's me... the dB Sub 15 will handle itself, by itself, in all but huge rooms with high ceilings - like the one I did last night in North East London!

Now instead of having 2 subs, one of which I rarely use --- I carry, as backup, a pair of Tapco Thump speakers; similar to a (and made by) Mackie. An active 15" with a 3-band EQ on the back, I can use them on stands if the SRM450s pack up (Which they never have in over 2 years now)... or turn the treble EQ pot down and put them on the floor if the sub goes.

...and even (here's the punchline!) use them as extra speakers on the floor with the sub, to hoof the bass up a little. Worked for the room last night, no 'Turnnipp Upp' calls after the band had finished. :cool:

I had used my sub for around 300-400 people. Yes it was struggling but on the dance floor it was perfect (school prom) :)

For larger rooms, I could also run the SRM450s on full range too which would help. It would appear that the DB Sub15 has the highest SPL out of the three, and is also lighter than the RCF. Is the RCF really worth the extra few hundred pounds?

My fiancées cousin has just bought a pair of these as he is a singer.


I demo'd them recently and wasn't that impressed with the sound tbh.


I thought they were OK with a little bit of EQ. Bass sounded OK and the top end was crisp but I only heard them with acoustic guitars and vocals through them, not music from a HDD or CD.

The Low Cut button on the SRM 450s rolls off at 75Hz, so you're not gaining much bottom end by popping them out... and IMHO I can't justify spending the extra £££'s to go up to RCF kit.

Which is what I thought, and my plans for them when purchasing - good as a backup / reinforcement speaker, but not to use as main playout; however they sound much better than many mobile rigs with cheap / old speakers that I have seen out and about - and only weigh 16.5kg / 36lb each! :D

After hearing DB and RCF side by side, i can actually say that i prefer the RCFs sound 9and this is coming from someone who got RCF because the DB stuff i wanted was discontinued after i paid for it) :)

to my ears I would go with the RCF, but you need the sound you and your target audience would be happy with.

I have the RCF 705 and it goes well with Mackies. The Mackies I find are a bit shy on bass if you play a lot of dance & rnb to a decent size venue. Ok for 60s, 70s, 80s etc.

In smaller venues (100-120) you need to keep your eye on the gain on the sub because it is loud, but it is nice because it takes the pressure off the mackies so they are hot running rather than roasting!

In bigger venues you can wind it up and it fill the room with good solid bass. I use my mackies on about 10 o clock when partnered with it which gives a nice rounded soudn to my ears. I think the mackies can be a bit 'toppy'

Also look at the 902AS which is a 12" sub from RCF. Same output, though not quite the same level of bass extension. It is physically smaller and lighter so might fit the bill. I think as sub is an expensive investment so it pays to get the right one first off.

I may have an opportunity to buy a second hand DB Sub 15 early next from a forum member which will save some money, and I know that the sub will have been looked after. I will try and find an RCF to listen to aswell.

Well, that's saying something if you actually bought two of them against the RCF's! I think i'll go with the DB Sub 15 from the good feedback I've heard.

These speakers are the best active speakers I have heard. A pair of the sound better, louder and punchier than a pair of SRM 450's WITH the matching subs!

They're launching matching HD subs too. A pair of HD 1521s with subs too would be awesome, and I'd be VERY tempted to get a set for larger gigs where the CVA 28s I use won't cope.
