Just getting ready for The Taxman.

Collecting my receipts together shows that I am spending about £210 a month on fuel(unleaded).

I'll obviously not be able to claim it all back....

Is this in keeping with others on the site.....It seems an awful lot.Doubt wether I spend that on food....monthly

That seems quite high to me, although it obviously depends on how many miles you do & how many MPG you get.

My monthly diesel bill is about £65-£75, and about 75% of this is for business use, which isn't bad considering I usually work at least 5 nights a week.

Hurrah for efficient vans & local gigs!

It would definitely be worth considering changing to a diesel vehicle if you do a lot of miles, and even altering driving habits can make a big difference.

If it's a company vehicle, claim back the proportion that has been legitimately used for business purposes irrespective of the amount. Otherwise claim a mileage allowance in line with HMRC guidelines for your particular vehicle type.

Well, when I say "claim back" I obviously mean "count as expenses".

Slightly OT but my fuel bill for last YEAR was less than £210 :D

last year my fuel bill for the van was just over £1800.00 but then I do travel all over the country. I use a 2ltr Transit and according to regular milage checks is adveraging around 34 miles per gallon (combined) mind u im gentle on me right foot. Most of my bookings average over the year at 73 miles (some as little as 4 miles upto just over 400 miles). but then again over 50 miles i charge extra 50p per mile and my bookies are happy to pay it, even tho often I am not competavive with local DJs

The average for this year is about £220 a month. Maybe I should do more local pub gigs and save myself that extra £10 :D

I'm amazed at how much some of you spend on fuel (except Vectis, of course!).

I reckon I've spent that much just this weekend! Mind you, that's between two vans.

Because some of us do not live in wealthy areas, so have to travel for gigs :sofa:

Swings & roundabouts.

You should consider yourself lucky that you don't live in one of the most expensive cities in the world!

If using your own private vehicle for work purposes do you need to provide fuel receipts or claim the mileage at the 40p rate? My understanding was you claimed your mileage rate unless you had VAT issues to consider. I may be wrong though and wait to be corrected.

Leaving it to my accountant Buddy....I know about the Bay City Rollers....he knows about figures!!

Before anyone adds to my comment the 40p applies to the first 10,000 miles and then 22p thereafter unless the numbers have changed recently. Again I will happilly stand corrected.

I fill up about £90 a fortnight about £80 is business rest personal use. If it is used for the business it can all go through the books and should do.

Correct, if the vehicle is owned by the business. If it's a private vehicle being used for business then you need to use the mileage rate instead.

I heard once that if you filled the tank only half full (for example), then you are carrying less fuel (weight) around, and therefore uses less fuel to accomodate the extra weight.

Just had a quick look out of interest and I have spend £800 in the last 6 months on Diesel.

I tend to only work 2 nights a week which keeps the diesel and van costs down!

I've just worked out that last year I did 3,900 miles (or there abouts) which works out - 325 miles per month.
