party music last weekend

last week end we made someones night by not only having time warp but playing it for him, he came up half way through the night, he seemed surprised when we said yes we have it and we would put it in with a party set towards the end,he told me last few parties he went to either the dj didn't have it or refused to play it, the next night we were guest's at an engagement party, i bumped into an old friend and his wife and got talking, anyway the dj put on oops upside your head( the dj was very good all night by the way) and my mates wife turned to my son and said bet you wouldn't play this would you(this upset him a little bit) she seemed shocked when he said i don't play it very often but would play it in the right circumstances. she then tells him about a party she went to and the dj wouldn't take any requests and played only dance music all night(her words not mine)

i know we have these discussions about cheesey music very often but surely if people want it play it

For over thirty five years, I've been stressing the point that my output is request led. I ask for requests at regular intervals throughout the gig. People come up and ask " Do you do requests? " Duuurrrrr.

I always thought that only Club DJ's played a rigid set. :confused: :confused:

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. :confused: I must come and see you work sometime. From what I can discern of your musical tastes, you are the most unsuitable person to be a DJ I've ever come across. Perhaps this is overidden by you being musically like me :

I don't play a rigid set.

I ask the clients for requests in advance & play as many of them as possible.

I also invite requests on the night itself, and if appropriate will also play those.

If the client (usually the bride) comes up and asks me to play a certain song, I will nearly always play it as the next song.

However if some spotty little :Censored: requests something :Censored: from the charts when everybody else is up dancing to The Mavericks then I ain't going to play it no matter how well he/she is connected.:eek:

The B/G are exceptions to this.

I will pretend I didn't hear what he wanted.....dead easy as this is sending me deaf anyway and if he persists consult with the Bride and tell her the problem.Of course your biggest ally in all this is a full dance floor;) ;) Gives you confidence to say what you like:D :) :D :)

The Time Warp is a regular feature of about 80% of all the parties I do, requested or otherwise, and always goes down a storm, (as do YMCA & Agadoo !!) :D

Gives me a chance to get the strobe on ;)

But then I don't look for 'street cred', I just want everyone on the floor to enjoy themselves and have fun :cool:

I fail to understand why cheesy music is usually talked about in a negative way when this is the music that's most likely to get people dancing!

Birdie Song ....................

Think you get the idea. Funny thing was,over half were under 30 and had full intentions of going clubbing at about 10. However they stayed because they enjoyed it so much :eek: :eek: . Plus the organiser rang this morning to thank me and was asking about dates for next xmas.

i know what you think about modern music but that is just as bad as someone who won't play time warp imo. i have had many nights where we have been playing older music and people are dancing when a request comes in for something newer, 9 times out of 10 it works just as well. no matter what the request is for(as long asit is not offensive) we will try it if time allows, some of the best nights we have had is from a request that in our opinion would not work ,the trick in these sittuations for us is to have a couple of follow up options, if the song works have a similar song ready if it don't have good floorfiller ready both are ready to press to play(it always surprises me how many times people choose the last chorus to get up and dance)

When I introduce myself at the start of the show I say "Good (morning/afternoon/evening). Welcome to (insert venue / event description here). I'm Dazzy 'D' and I'm your DJ today. And yes I do play requests!". I regularly invite requests throughout yet I still get people coming up saying "Do you take requests, mate!" :bang:

You havent lived---a lot of the Darts is absolutely brilliant---even if a lot of cover versions of older stuff---Its Raining is probably my favourite slow track of all time:D :D :D

I personally wouldnt choose to sit and listen to this stuff but if its what the guests want, I have no problem playing it. Had a few times where I have played 30+ minutes of cheese with a packed dancefloor. To the above tracks you can add Wig Wam Bam, Nellie The Elliphant and The Can Can :D
