There seems to be a number of people packing in DJ'ing (or thinking about it). Not just on this forum but in general. You always get people doing this but have noticed a lot of people mentioning it.

WHY ?
Are they attention seeking ??
Is business bad ??
Do they know something we don't ??
Poor money ??
Realising how hard it is to make a liviing ??

Just a topic for discussion ;) ;) .

Not aimed at anyone considering leaving, just open to opinions

I think these two account for most of it...especially at the moment, as we're in the worst recession for decades.

Just bobbed in on my mate who was receiving some undeserved abuse from a bunch of :Censored: heads...not good.

When I played football we had the same problem with people abusing Referees
.....now alot of Sunday morning games have to be played without a redgistered official.

The British public are getting more :Censored: ed more often and are turning ruder.:bang:

That's one of the reasons why I stick to weddings.

The same thing happened to one of my guys on Friday. I tell them that if they get abusive and won't go away to turn the music off and walk away, which is what he did. He got a lot of praise from the venue for keeping his calm.

Back on topic....

I don't think people take the business seriously enough, so it's not a life changing decision when they stop.

Weddings (in my price range) are the events where I'm least likely to have drunk idiots come up & abuse me.

Are generally at good hotels that will offload the abusive types for you and support your decision to shut down until order is restored.

I have noticed people packing in too. Just picked up a wedding in Summer as their DJ had gone bust. I assured them I can't go bust as I own everything outright and have no finance against the business.

Its not easy, but you have to just crack on. Our first year was nearly 100% cheap agency work. Next year it should be 50 : 50 agency and our own stuff. Some times you just need to slog on with the cheap work to keep the rig moving. Not so easy if you are full time though - I accept that.

Unusual for Disco firms to go bust...you are not really buying and re-selling as such.This would surely only happen to the entrepreneurs erroneously buying expensive dancefloors or expensive lighting to hire out....and not raising revenue from it;) :confused: :eek: ???

they are normally the ones with a sensible head on their shoulders and think about the bussiness side more then the rest of us , i would of thought it was more the flyby night dj looking for easy money that would struggle, take out a loan to buy the equipment without realising how much work is involved or how difficult it really is to do the job properly, a lot of people think that all they have to do is turn up play all there favourite songs and everyone will go home happy, and they will make £100's and they really have not got a clue imo

I've been very tempted to give up but I'm still ploughing on at the moment.

My reasons are:
Alot of effort for little reward
With a full time job i have very little time as it is
rude customers
poor money
not enough work to make a profit
rising costs (fuel, running costs, CD's)

For me i DJ for the love of music and performing but i would not like to go full time with it as i when i DJ just for the money i personally find it takes the joy out of it.

I thimk that's a strong contender, when you no longer enjoy it and just do it for the sake of obligation, financial or otherwise, it's hard to keep the motivation going. ?

I imagine it would just have been an excuse so the DJ could take a better booking. I mean, even if you did manage go bust there are still ways of not letting your client down.

You get rude customers and people in general in all walks of life, sometimes they don't bother me and I can deal with them other times they get to me, but I would not let them be the cause of giving up something I love doing.

Indeed. I was thinking exactly the same thing when reading the OP.

I came across lots more rude customers when I worked in the bank than I do running mobile discos & pub quizzes.

The few who do appreciate your efforts (and say so) probably keep most of us going - When you don't enjoy it any more then that’s the time to stop. I have one or two a year when I wonder if its all worth it - but the majority of time I get the buzz.

I only started doing this for real in the summer of this year and yes it is hard starting up and it takes a fair chunk of cash to do it. You can't do it on the dole thats for sure, when the phone wasn't ringing and I was sat at home most weekends I began to wonder what the hell have I done but the gigs and enquiries are starting to come in now slowly but surely. The year's ending on a high. Here's to a good 2010. All the best to everyone on this site.

Surely its a good thing if more people are giving up as there will be more work for us and loads of cheap gear out there?

no they will just e replaced by people buying the cheap gear and thinking it's easy money, who will find out the hard way it's not, so they will soon pack it in and there will be more cheap gear around which will be bought by(well you know where i am going)

It doesn't work that way, loads of cheap gear encourages more people to join the ranks. The effects the recession has reduced many peoples earnings, creating a need to find other sources for a bit of extra cash, and setting up as a DJ, has been the choice of many. It's never been easier or cheaper to become a 'DJ', fortunately, many of the start ups, fall by the wayside within a few months, after finding out it isn't the easy way to make money, as they had been led to believe. EBay has many 'Maplin' set ups for sale, usually accompanied by a bull :Censored: statement of how the seller regularly earned £200 - £300 a night, two or three times a week, but now no longer has the time, due to their 'day job' (must be a hell of a day job). On the other hand you don't often see complete 'quality' set ups for sale. Personally, I think next year, will be the toughest to date, for many, with prices driven down across the board.

Ive done top end weddings some in the back gardens or their estates, good money but the clientele are as bad as those in towns.:bang: some chav do's Ive had the pleasure of doing have been a pleasure often passing in good vibes and comments at the end of the evening..and gettin paid!:eek:
