Well tonight folks I'm going to my first ever "Christmas dinner and disco" party.

I'm going with 30 other adults. The youngest is 49. The rest are 60+.

It's a neighbourhood watch and local council party. I try to help them out where possible and I also represent the "youth" of Nottingham-ideas for kids clubs etc.

I'm looking forward to having a nice meal and being entertained by another DJ.

Expect a lengthly review. :p :D

Have fun and enjoy it!

Most importantly though detach yourself from Dj land(just for one night), don't worry wether the Dj has PLI or PAT and if he uses velcro or not :D

Ahhh, I home now with a glass of white. I will be honest, I have had many :beer1: but I managed to speak to the DJ, as a "potential" customer - who only charged £80. :| What hope does that give the young folks. He had a truss with good light show (two barrels, two scanners, two gobo's) No star cloth. He used Microsoft x cell to store all of his songs which were on a copied CD.

He didn't play background music whilst we ate our meal - but the venue manager was left to do the music!

I spoke to the manager, passed over my details, but let myself down when booze was taken off me, twice!

This was my night out but they have a duty to follow, I guess.

Turns out the guy was from an agency who charged the hotel £160.

It was frustrating for someone like myself because he couldn't use a mic and music choice was terrible, although I had a few dances to the 80's and 70's.

I have pictures to follow tomorrow....

I wonder why? Do you think he will take you seriously whilst under the influence......I think not.

Got to say Charlie your drinking is getting the better of you - you need to grow up and start taking charge of your life. Yes I like a drink but you seem to be at it all the time.

Sorry if this sounds hard but that's the way it looks to me.

The agency charged the hotel £160 but only paid the DJ £80?!

I've taken a few bookings lately for disco's at one of Bristol's better hotels, principally because the hotels clients don't want to pay the Hotel's inflated rates (for DJ's booked through another local agency).

Now, I haven't been charging peanuts, but I know for a fact that I'm charging a lot more than the agency DJ's have been getting themselves. This unfortunately seems to be common practice.

Reading back from that post, I sound quite frankly an absolute arse hole, which for the record, I’m not, or try not to be.

Yes, I drink a bit but at the end of the day there is and always will be (for the time being) lack of understanding from my point of view and yourself. I’m 16. At the moment I’m living life to the full and on reflection last night I made a fool of myself BUT maybe a few of you were similar to how I behave now. You guys are earning a living and putting bread on the table whereas I live with my parents, all my food is paid for and I don’t have to pay any bills, I just have to worry about myself.

A lot of the time, when I post on the forum – it can be interoperated in many different ways. Yes I had a few drinks, but I was sitting on a table eating a meal with 30 other people (mainly women) who were 60+. As sad as it may seem, I was really looking forward to the outing – having the night off and being entertained. The venue, by law, should have allowed me to have a drink (we are talking one or two beers) with a meal as I was being supervised by persons 18+.

What I didn’t explain was that towards the end of the night, the duty manager did come up and apologise to our table and explained I was the first “underage person” they had this Christmas.
The DJ wasn’t great though and a lot of people felt the same as me. It wasn’t his fault, but he didn’t have any teeth! So when he spoke on the mic...you couldn’t understand a word. The music was just all top 40 although he did play Abba, after I requested it.

I’m sorry folks for sounding a bit of idiot (I felt embarrassed reading the thread back) and I will cut down on the old booze, I don’t why I do it as it spoils me as a person. Looking back I hate myself for it...I will have to focus myself as I’m working Thursday night all the through to Tuesday night, (one of them is the dreaded young enterprise gig)

None of them drink.

For the record, your other post about 'underage drinking' is incorrect. Perhaps you'd like to check out the laws about having a drink with a meal.

Lets not go there again on Charlie having a beer. The point I brought up ages ago was about him running an event which could be seen to encourage under age drinking. He seems to have it under control. When I was his age my main concerns were beer and breasts and how to get both.

I was in the pub when I was 16 and as long as my mates and I behaved ourselves the landlord turned a blind eye. Okay it was the early 90's so less strict back then but no harm done.

Charlie - My advise to you would be keep your beer and the DJ'ing separate. Especially drinking in your established venues as you put them in a tough position.

In my club days I used to get wasted on free beer. I actually finished one night hanging off the cross fader, it was the only thing keeping me upright until the knob fell off. That was me on the booth floor for a snooze for an hour. It was the end of the night afterall and a chap deserves a rest after a hard days work. Am I proud of it - hell yeah I was a club DJ and doing a belting job. Would I do it again. No I've grown up, but that's part of growing up.

Hmmmm, yeah.

I'm just going to be careful what I post on here from now on. I'm not like half the people on here who lie and only tell the bits they want others to here. With me, what you see is what you get. I think that's the best way to go about life.

Like the young enterprise post - certain aspects get blown out of proportion and people become unrealistic.

I don't drink whilst DJ'ing, except 2/3 times in completely, which were in out of the ordinary circumstances.

...another thing. When I do have a drink, I'm not one to fall over or slur my words. When I had a serious chat with the manager and he wrote my website and number down in his diary, I wasn't "fooling around" or making a "idiot of myself."

I will continue to post on here, but just be very careful.

I wish I had of just said,

"Yeah, great night. Had a good old dance but the meal wasn't fantastic. DJ's music choice was a bit iffy but he had a good rig, although the lights were a copy of the "abstracts. The manager had to play the background music and change it on several occasions, not forgetting he had to actually start the disco because they couldn't find the DJ."

I know now for the future.

P.S, the young enterprise party is looking to be a great success. Venue and security sorted....tickets completely sold out....and a member from this forum is coming down to supply sound and light hire. I will let you know how it goes.

Andy,

Charlie was at a christmas party, was drinking legally & was NOT working. He's also admitted that he RARELY has a drink when working.

Compare that to the rest of us. I know for a fact (because they've admitted it) that there are a number of people here who DID drink at his age...and that was when they WERE working.

I also know that there are a number of people here who DID drink more than they should when they were his age, but Charlie had admitted he does NOT even get to the stage where he slurs his speech.

I'm sure many of us have seen how loads of teens behave when they're out on those "Booze Britain" type TV programmes. It's a shame they don't all drink as responsibly as Charlie...then we wouldn't have alcolol abuse among young people which is such a serious problem in this country today.

For what it's worth, I do think there has been a slight over-reaction in this thread.

However, if you accept praise and compliments on here for your professional attitude and actions, then the reverse must also be applied. I think he would have been better not to have mentioned it at all.

Rob, there is a bit of a difference between DJs from 20+ years ago and DJs now, and what might have been acceptable then possibly isn't now - that's the general feeling from the experience DJs on here - including yourself, if I remember correctly?

Something else that wasn't available, since even I started, is the internet as a resource. More specifically, you have forums like these, and even video guides and blogs on Youtube! So a young DJ can choose to learn good practice, mistakes to avoid, and to learn from more experienced DJs without even leaving the house.

In my opinion, Charlie didn't actually do anything wrong in this case, until he represented himself - as a business - under the influence.

And what might NOT have been acceptable then possibly IS now, as loads of people obviously think it IS fine for teenagers to go out & drink the monthly recommended alcohol limit in one night, because they do it every week in their hundreds of thousands.

I'm sure most of us have seen the TV programmes.

So that's acceptable, but it's NOT acceptable for Charlie to have just a couple of drinks when he's at a Christmas party?

Of course it is, and legal also under certain circumstances, as a couple of us pointed out at the beginning. BUT: It's the question of whether seeking to do business with a Hotel, when you're underage and are drinking, ( whether legally or otherwise ) which in the eyes of many on here is plain bad business practice. Wrong impression. If Charlie had said to the Manager, " Look, I'm socialising tonight, and thus off duty. Would it be OK to come and see you tomorrow to discus what advantages I can offer you with my Disco? " then I think we'd have all agreed it was the correct course of action.

As to what some folk binge drink on a night out, quite frankly it horrifies me. My predilection for a tipple is well known, but I was brought up in the era when if you were drunk in public, you sat quietly in a corner. Sorry, but I can feel this veering off into a whole new topic.

Individual circumstances vary widely. In some cases I'd say you were bang out of order, in others I'd do exactly the same. One thing I do know is that it does affect your abilities. Not always for the better.
Also, I read Darren to say that his DJ's don't drink, rather than being banned. from it. Either way I'd be happy with the situation. I now have a drop of muscle relaxant when I get home, not while I'm working.

And you see, (as I'm sure you know well enough) that's the whole point. We still do like it, but only when we've finished working. Times change. For better and for worse. C'est la vie.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

The food was awful but a really good night overall. Drink wasn't an issue as I was Matthew ;) Although, they didn't ask for any ID.

Disco was brilliant. It was two girls (year older than me?) Really good mix of music. All the old tunes were remixed but sounded awsome.

She used a SM57 microphone (I thought it was for instruments?) but interacted well at the start.

The rig wasn't anything special. The sound was pretty decent (didn't reconise the label) with two huge subs. Really loud and created a good atmosphere.

out of interest charlie what did the older people think of them, and why did you think they were better(music/personality or the fact they were young girls:D )

Charlie Brown

They looked a bit 'nerdy' with braces and glasses on so I wasn't drawn that way...

...It was the same gear as the old gezza too (agency work)

They played a good mix of music. Top 40, Xmas tunes, 90's club, motown and old club classics. They could of played a bit more Billy Ocean etc but overall they were very good.

Baked camebert with things to dip it in.

Steak with goronzola melted on top

Christmas pudding

...Oh, and a free bar all night. :D

The food was lovely. Really really nice.

We all had wayyyyyy too many drinks and got chucked out the restaurant. Our boss (who is a rugby player but respected gent in Nottingham) got one of the security dudes in a headlock because the guard wouldn't let someone finishing singing.

We then went for a boogie before going to a casino. Again, the police were called there because someone was 'drunk' and our boss was trying to stick up for them.

I then ended up in Gala casino till 5.30am?

Eating a bacon and egg bap now...Me and the accountant are the only ones in the office.
