Christmas Party Nights Vs Normal Bookings

Which do you prefer,christmas party nights at a residency or normal bookings at this time of year?

I have been doing christmas party nights for the last 10 years now,always look forward to doing them ,but this year i have to be honest and say i am not enjoying doing them,I would rather be taking on the private parties,ie birthdays,anniversaries,weddings.

how do you feel about this one???????????

I dislike Christmas parties because people seem to have forgotten how to behave. Drinking stupid amounts, falling over, getting aggressive and in a couple of cases already this year, abusing my DJs.

Having said that, generally this year, my personal parties have been going quite well.

In fact, with the exception of an outdoor event Xmas Eve, I've managed to completely avoid Christmas parties this year altogether :) Not played a single cheesy Xmas song yet :cool:

Normal bookings definitely for me - detest with a passion having to play Xmas songs - I've got a Wedding on Xmas Eve and am trying to persuade the bride she doesn't really want any Xmas music :lol:

I prefer the private parties and especially the ones where I am booked for a certain genre of music (Indie or 80's).

Totally agree with what Darren said although this year I haven't had that much grief.

If you've got wall to wall hotel Xmas parties, ( been there done that, once upon a time. It's a two edged sword) then by the time the day arrives, you're prepared to scream when Slade comes on the radio! Nowadays, work's work. ( Though a few grim parties can dull your appetite somewhat. )

As for boorish and oafish behaviour, that's a whole new thread. :( :( :(

I love Xmas party nights. Its my 11th season at the same hotel and many people have been coming every year. People often book for next year on the night. I was fully booked for December in February.

So far Christmas Parties for me have been great. Full dance floor all night, etc.

I have had normal bookings inbetween them though to break them up.

Christmas parties tend to be a load of people who don't know everyone else lumped in and are not bothered who they upset. Loads of really drunk people who can end up abussive, etc. Been okay this year so far, but stuck to top end hotel work.

Weddings -Everyone will know either the bride or groom so its on their mind not to ruin their special day. So 99 times out of 100 they are well behaved as a result.

All of my festive workload is exclusively private bookings. I've never taken on block bookings; "eggs in one basket" and all that.

Christmas parties for me everytime... but that's probably only as its generally the largest crowds i play to in the year (capacity of 1300 with most nights being around 1000 people) so it makes it nice and easy as even on a bad night you'll generally have half the crowd on the dancefloor still... where as with usual private parties that are at most 300 - 500 people i have to work a bit more to keep the party going.

Been an odd season this year. Many of the midwek parties have been finishing early, despite people having a great time with a full dancefloor. I'm booked until 0030, but have only reached that time once so far.

I had one event, booked by an Army cadet group, that finished at 2245! They finished dinner arouknd 2145, the hotel took ten minutes to change the rom around, and then they were virtualy gone!

ive done the same venue at xmas for the last 8 years. Average 220 people at each gig with many of the same people coming back year after year.

it is basically the same music at every event and can be a bit boring for me, but i dont have to keep humping gear around and only do about 3 hours per night.

Also had several school kids parties which are all exactly the same as each other, but there paying for my holiday in January so im happy enough.

Pretty knackered now though, and still got loads to do.
