To sub or not to sub (woofer)

Bit of a dilema, got a gig tomorrow at a local venue with particularly bad access. Tony knows it well :D

Now the room I'm in is the pretty darn big with a high roof with glass dome etc, before last week this wouldn't have been a problem as I didn't have the RCF subs but after using them last week I think they might be needed for this venue.

The 312's will handle it ok on their own and the client will probably know no difference but should I be trying to do the best for the client or is it just me wanting the big sound?

I don't have a roadie to assist (although there is one that's keen to come out but lives in the next town so logistically it's difficult to say the least) so i'm on my own on this one.

Do you think I should just get on with it and take the sub/s or go with just the tops as the client probably wouldn't be bothered either way?

No help whatsoever, but those of us with big wooden tops don't have this problem. :p :D :D :D
The serious answer, which also is of no use, is to have at least three systems, with different characteristics, to avoid this dilemma. Crazy K checked out many systems, and liked the big wooden tops referred to previously. Sadly, he couldn't get then on the poles. :( :( :( He ended up with a Peavey UL system.

Sorry Paul, the only advice I can offer is that I did a gig with Twinspin where the access would have been dangerous with subs. His RCF's on their own sounded excellent. ( Think they're 312's, but he'll clarify)

I have had this sort of dilemma on a number of occasions. Gone both ways and half done myself in with Peavey ul 15 and subs ul115s and two amps or take my JBL eons G2 actives. When I have gone with the actives, a bit of extra bass and no one is any the wiser. Back saved and easy pack away at end of night. If your in doubt, just go with the tops, but if you have plenty of time at the start and to pack away go with the big set up.

Subs and Tops, pair of each. Make forgotten. I wouldn't recommend trying to emulate it, cos I was singularly unimpressed. :( Since it is the venue I expected, that really does make it tricky. I think my preference would be an old Tamla Motown band. ( Four tops, geddit? :D :D :D ). Dunno, can't give you a good answer. :o :o :o :o :o

Other cabs in my van don't ever need subs, cos they're twin 15". That's one option for me, but not you.

just bring them and see. Use two on half the power otherwise - i always have mine but i do have 12 years on you LOL.

It's up in a lift across a floor , up a set of stairs through a hallway and eventually you get to the room :eek:

So it will make a difference as I've got saturday and Sunday weddings this weekend aswell ;)

I've used 2 x Warrior L400's and 2 x D-Class 158's ....plenty of noise in that room Paul - don't bother the 312's will do just fine.

I was working on a system Tuesday which used a couple of old EV cabs--- big sub bass and 15inch top with horn.

Very loud and loads of thud but frankly not 100 per cent clear--im sure the tops on their own will do--I worked with a pair of RCF passives a few weeks ago--very clear clean sound.

Sometimes life is a compromise.:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

And if your roadie breaks a leg and theres no Insurance

I always take my subs, becomes the norm after a bit, so i dont notice the difference.

I set my bass bins up on a second amp, so if the room is a little larger than expected, I can raise the top cabs up (up to 8 foot) and turn the volume up on the bass bins.

I always spend 20 minutes sound checking with a few tracks. Not too many though, want to get the system sounding crystal ;)

My advice would be to take a sub just in case (if not 2), you don't have to use them, but it's better to have them on standby at least.

Always nice to be on your toes with the venue's sound limiter.....lol.....I had many challenging nights with the bloomin' things :)

I use a dollyboard on wheels for the 705's. I put other equipment on top. Nothing delicate though.
