Bride wants a CD sample of our work!!

I had this e-mail from one of our brides today...

"We have you booked for the DJ, and would like to sample some of your work.

Would you have a mixed CD etc for us to listen to before the reception???

Look forward to hearing from you.."

Obviously we cant send her copied cd's so not sure what to do really! We also don't do mixing at weddings we just fade tracks from one to another.

How would you reply?

My reply would be:

Unfortunately due to the nature of copyright laws, we are unable to supply you with a sample of our work.

However if you wanted to come and see me in a working enviroment I could arrange it.

(Should you have any public gigs over Christmas.)

Probably in a manner guaranteed to ensure I didn't get the gig. ;) :(

Seriously, you must reply politely that
1) It's not legal to send her a copy. ( I'm fairly sure it isn't. It's certainly not good practice. )
2) Explain why it's pointless, as what you might do at one gig could be totally unsuitable for another. Thus it is of no help in assessing your suitability.

If not I would reply along the lines of:

"As a professional and ethical DJ and Disco Operator, I am sure that you will understand our strict respect for copyright law, and why therefore we would be unable to provide samples of the wide range of music which will be available to you and your guests. We would again reassure you of our committment to acheive your expectations" etc. etc. ??

We don't have a problem with people seeing us work, but all our work is either weddings or teen parties and we would never invite a potential customer to a private booking.

She is being a bit of a pain really wanting to get us for next to nothing and getting her wedding planner to call us to try to get discounts too!

But if she were to sucker two or three people into each providing a one hour plus CD of a professional DJ pulling out all the stops in an effort to impress. that's her reception music covered at a bargain price ?? ;) :)

If you are using original sound recordings you will need clearance for this separately

This sentence leads me to suggest that the license does not cover you for what is being suggested. My opinon is that this LM license allows one to make a cd which can be legally played containing material which has been re - performed, for example, a covers band recording a demo of themselves playing popular hits.

Club DJ's regularly evade punishment by labelling their mixes as "promo CD's" for promotional use only. This method however, is something of a grey area.

Regards giving her a CD to play (and doing yourself out of a gig) all you would have to do is "watermark" the audio by having a jingle play every so often throughout the mix.

"Super Duper Disco's, Britain's Number One" . . . "For promotional use only"

I could help you out with that if its an option you'd wish to pursue. :)

Meet her in person. Shes just trying to suss you out in the way she knows.

You can bet a friend has said or shes read on a website about dj mixes etc. It makes no difference but she does not know that?

Have a meeting at the venue if its near you. Explain that you dont mix but you know how to read the crowd etc. She wont even notice on the night.

When she booked he was only 13 so I expect she will be surprised to see a young man and not the child she originally booked :)

I would definitely get the bride to see the rig in action as they may not trust a 15 year old, hence the questions.

I really wouldnt put yourself out too much---just invite to a gig then to use the proverbial phrase---take it or leave it.

Its slightly unusual for someone to book and pay money then AFTERWARDS start trying to renegotiate terms and start querying suitability.

I have only had that once and im glad I had a NRBF of £150;)

Yes!

A lot of people are surprisingly happy to do this for me.

WHY?

Because of their ego.

I always sound them out first of course--- but you would be surprised how many people have the attitude--Im having a fantastic party /wedding and I am happy for others to see how great MY event is--show offs!!!!

I cant actually ever remember anyone saying no to me and I am careful that there are max 2 people and its very unobtrusive.

Admittedly my events tend to be a little more "less serious" as they are Barn/Line Dance events where no one gives a :Censored: about how they behave or how silly they are, but I have had people sit in at Weddings as well as Hoe Downs etc.

Perhaps not a fair comparison with a straight Disco I would agree.

I suppose there is a problem on this particular scenario that the BRIDEZILLA might say something inappropriate like--I dont like the Brides Dress:eek: :eek: :eek:
