Gigging This Weekend??

Hi all,

Just thought I'd see what you're all up to this weekend with regards to working or, if you're lucky (like me!) what you'll be doing if you have a day off today.

I'm not booked this weekend (just as well as i'm now going out tonight!) but was booked for Thursday 17th for a School Xmas Disco - however this was cancelled "due to the threat of snow" which was a shame, as I was really looking forward to it! What made it worse was that we had a fair bit of snow Thursday night/early Friday morning - but they thought it was okay for everyone to go to school? :confused: Anyway, it has however been re-booked for January (obviously without the xmas theme!).

My next and last Xmas gig is Monday 21st where i'm back at Sedgebrook hall for the 4th time this month, of which i'm also looking forward to.

So - What are you lot up to this weekend?

I hope we have a bit of a thaw today, my garden path was like the Cresta Run last night when I got home, as was the area outside the garage. Made unloading Lol's kit fun. Turned into something I think we could develop into an event for the next winter Olympics

The other end of our road is like it too, as I discovered when I couldn't park up outside home earlier in the day (bloody commuters using our street as the station car park (always happens when it snows)) when I drove further down to turn the van around & realised mid turn that I was actually moving sideways!

Had a corporate gig yesterday which was interesting to say the least(take a look at Booches' thread in the gallery).

Just about to set off for a Wedding at Hothorpe Hall playing alongside a Jazz band so apart from the journey there and back it should be pretty uneventful.

Another Wedding tomorrow at The Priest house Castle Donnington then nothing until NYE :D :D

Well should have had 5 rigs out tonight, but had 3 cancellations due to snow - and just heard the 2 DJ's that are out are over an hour late.

I've just returned from my gig (See Post #3) (Via McDonalds lol) and it was good.

It took a wee while to figure out what people actually wanted, as a big group of people wanted 80's, another group wanted Chart and another group wanted Motown.

So, once I'd established who wanted what, it was a case of then playing the music to suit to try and please everyone.

At the end, I was asked if I was free on September 11th of all days :O to do a birthday party and I had several people say the were very impressed with me.

So, all in all, it was a pretty good night.

I'm going to sleep now because i'm shattered! :D :D :D

I didn't want to be working at all in 2009! I was meant to be having a year off (well, from the frontline DJing bit anyway!) due to family issues and the project of launching a brand new service in 2010. However, things didn't quite go to plan with the non-DJing role and I've been out most weeks from April onwards. :(

As for my marketing, I've spent a grand total of £0 marketing in 2009 compared to about £4,000 in 2008 probably means my marketing worked too well!

And the fact that in March I was living with my partner and our kids and now I'm single living back with the parents, maybe I should have stuck to my original plans!

It was like that last night unloading from the venue. I stepped outside onto the snow, forgetting that I had my "racing slicks Posh Shoes" on and just managed to not hit the deck, to the laughs and cheers from the "shall we call them", Ladies. That had a few too many to drink and were waiting for one of the Taxis to arrive.

If you are spending £4k a year on marketing but then earning £40k a year profit then its perfectly justifiable.

I assume you're saying that if you earn 10 times your annual marketing budget, it's justifiable. I earn 10 times my annual marketing budget in less than 4 months!

I'm saying that if you make 10 times profit from what you invest into marketing then that it is a worthwhile investment.

Obviously if somebody only spend £300 on marketing and made £3,000 profit then that is good, but isnt going to put food on the table etc without any other sort of way of generate work, i.e word of mouth etc.

oh and back on topic, this week as a company we have done:

1 on tuesday - corporate party
2 on Wednesday - corporate party and a drama school christmas party
5 on Thursday - a kids party and 4 x corporate parties
3 on Friday - all corporate parties
4 on Saturday - an 18th and 3 corporate parties
4 today - 2 x kids parties and 2x weddings

We had a good budget for 2008. It was set before the credit crunch kicked in!

£40k profit? Didn't even come close to that gross!

But, it was also a case of sowing the seeds for future growth. We are only a 3-man outfit and we all have day jobs (I work in Benefits, my dad for a well-known car manufacturer and my brother makes coffins!). We recorded a very small profit for 2008 after costs (including upgrading just about everything!) but we also have a good footing for the future.

I'm usually off on Mondays at the moment, but I'm helping a friend with the Christmas quiz at his regular Monday venue. It will be great fun as it will be the first time I've done joint presentation of a quiz, and we'll be able to bounce off each other with the (hopefully entertaining) chat.

There will be all sorts of stuff going on, as he is doing an X Factor type quiz (where he reads out the teams with the bottom two scores after each round and the others vote one of them off). As well as that, there's Play your cards right & Bingo (both of which I'm doing) & one of his quiz punters is going up to sing a couple of songs!

Should be an entertaining night all round, and as my friend is picking me up on the way, I'll even be able to have a couple of Vodkas!

If you invest it wisely then you will be fine, obviously there is no guarantee and it varies for different people but for me it has certainly been a rule of thumb that I have worked with.

I am expecting £18,000's worth of bookings from the wedding fayre for example.

Since i started in 1982 and have grown my busisness to a full time professional company running from a modern busisness unit supplying dj entertainment and equipment hire across the uk and have several major blue chip clients i look after i would call that successful.
However point i was making is you spend a sum on advertising could be for instance yell.com theres no guarantee your going to get your money returned or make a return plus profit.
I think if you read my original post i didn't indicate that for years i have had no return just on sum occasions not much but that's advertising some you win some you loose clearly after all these years i have won more than i lost.
