View Full Version : My manic weekend...

Hi guys, hope you have all had a good Christmas season.

Friday night I worked at Notts County football club in one of their conference suites. This was one of two nights I would be using Tim's set-up (tc100) which is absolutely fantastic.

The event was for 15-18 year olds and was organised by another young enterprise team. It was an early start, 7.00pm coupled with an early finish, 11.00pm. It was a really good gig with a full dance floor all night. The group were told that the suite had a maximum capacity of 250 which was complete rubbish as the room looked empty even when it was full! I don't have any videos of this night but I know Tim took plenty, so hopefully he will upload them soon. ;) At the end of the night we found a skirt under the DJ stand!

Saturday day I had a Children's party (4 years old) which is always a laugh and involves plenty of running around.

Saturday night I was at one of my regular venues. It's literally a tin hut that they have converted into a bar and function room. The setting is very nice, next to the river trent. A lot of the people that come to the venue live on the boats nearby. I have become really friendly with everyone their and this is the only place where I will have a sneaky beer as I feel like I'm at home. Jonny and I didn't get home till 3.45am!

Sunday day time the snow was getting really bad. I had a Christmas neighbourhood watch gig which last year was very good but unfortunately due to the snow only 13 people came! I then received a phone call from a crying mother saying that both my grandparents had gone into a koma. This was really weird and freaky as it happened to both of them at pretty much the same time.....

Regardless of what was going on at home the show had to go on! This was my young enterprise party (which I had organised) and I was determined to make it stress free and run smoothly. Again, I had the pleasure of working with Tim and using his gear. Tim kindly DJ'd for the first hour whilst I was on the door with security, chucking drunk people out etc etc.

At my gig on Saturday night a guy tells me how he used to be a professional dancer. He asks if he could do MJ, thriller. I clear the dancefloor and encourage everyone to watch him and it was hilarious! It reminded me of the people who audition to Britians Got Talent and they believe they are brilliant at what they do - when really they are diabolical. He is a great guy so I asked if he would like to perform at my party, in which he said yes! This went down a treat and was rather amusing.

Again, full dancefloor all night and at times when I was struggerling or busy, Tim kindly stepped in and did a bit. (he is immense by the way...he mixes so well, I thought it was one continues song!)

We finished half an hour early (12.30) as a lot of people were picked up at 12.00. We had one problem at the end of the night with a youth who was asked to leave hours ago. He blatantly stole this lads phone in front of me so I alerted security. He denied he had stole the phone so I phoned the police. 6 cops came down to try and resolve the problem but after they had searched and searched for 30 minutes the phone wasn't found. I felt really sorry for the guy, yet the police let the youth off scot free. I chucked him out for trying to start a fight earlier on in the night.

All in all, I'm very tried. A big thanks to Tim for everything he has done and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. :)

P.S...I have some really good pictures but it won't let me load them up on both the home computer and my laptop.

Thought I'd seen it before....not very good access if I remember right. :o
Didn't have a good gig either - nice summers night and the people sat on the river supping beer all night long....can't blame them as we didn't get to many hot nights ....so the bar staff left the windows open so they could hear the music.

Poor little me sweating my nads off in a hot room..... ;) :D

Sorry Charlie, I think this is really insensitive. If my Grandmother had gone into a coma the 'show would still go on' - once I had found a replacement DJ to cover it.

I did not think you could get an SIA licence to be on the door and 'chuck people out' at your age - maybe wrong ??

Thanks, it's not insensitive because my Grandad has been ill for years. He is in a home and has parkinsons and alzhimers....I used to get on with him really well and I have seen him today but I couldn't cancel a party with 300 coming. As I expected he is out of the koma now, thankfully.

Sorry ,have to disagree. I think it shows a very mature & professional attitude.
At the end of the day there isn't really much you can do to offer help in such situations, in fact it is very easy to unwittingly increase distress levels amongst everyone. You can rest assured that the best thing is for them to be resting under the care of expert medical professionals in an environment equipped with the best possible resources.
I'm sure your grandparents would have been very proud of you Charlie, and I hope that they will recover to tell you so. :)

Sorry Charlie, but to me your post had a 'couldn't care less, a disco is more important' attitude.

As for 'chucking people out' - do you have an SIA ??? This is a legal requirement for any door supervisors now.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe Charlie had hired correctly licensed door staff/security and he had only alerted/instructed them to take the required actions ?

Exactly. I did say in my post that I was on the door with them, checking tickets and the like. If someone was deemed to be "drunk" then I would ask them to leave - if they didn't I would ask the security to remove them. They couldn't be everywhere at once!

Pretty much agree with Kernow on that one. You can do nothing to help the Grandparents, but your gig could go mammaries skywards without you. Not an easy decision, but an obvious one. Well done Charlie.

I am not attacking you Charlie, it's just the way I read your thread.
Grandparents - personally I would get cover if I heard this news, but I am lucky to have a large amount of DJ's in my immediate area who can cover. I just read it as - Grandparents ill, must do disco still.

The way I read your thread, it sounded like some cowboy from the local pub acting as bouncer etc. out to make as much money as possible for xmas ( could be cause I am getting old - and bought one of those boxes (3 bottles) of wine from ASDA, that should have lasted a week but....... :D )

The SIA licence bit is very big up here at the moment. Professional door persons have the same problem as us with cowboys. As with ourselves - you can spot the cowboys a mile off. :D

Instead of moaning about lack of bookings and jacking it in.....look at what you have got....not what you haven't!!

There is also another thing to consider for the people who don't do kids parties!!Ok you may have done a 30th birthday at the weekend..... but are you going to do that persons 31st,32nd,33rd....probably not!!Very often you can set up a run with a child....starting with their third possibly to their twelfth and beyond .I started with Victorias 4th and have just done her 9th at Barnsleys biggest nightclub....5 x whatever:eek: :D

Maybe you're not that interested cos your twirly wirly lights don't look so good in a sports centre in daytime.....but its all business:bang: :bang:

You are probably assuming what I charge for Kidz Parties....Theres a chap round here charging £200.00 for 2 hours.I draw the line at getting dressed up like Squarepants Spongebobs (is that right) tho.

I like to be busy.....handed out 30 business cards as well...probably get some adult work from it??

Looks good Charlie, as previously mentioned - you are really good with the kids! Looks like a tidy setup :) Only thing I would say... The background music sounded a little bit too loud for the guests to be able to hear each other talking during dinner?

Apart from that, great work! Would be good to gig with you at some point!

I just prefer working at night and doing the older gigs. Children's parties are good once in a while but it isn't great money and an awful lot of effort, even though I enjoy it.

The children's parties also take up a lot of my day....and if it's on a Saturday I would mos probably have to pay for a mini bus ride down there as Dad is at work.

It has nothing to do with "twirly" lights. StarZSoundS do you enjoy your job? Or is it just for the money?

The problem here is the older DJ's have served an apprenticeship. It is a different generation where we used to work hard and save up for things instead of having it thrown in our lap.

I have spent thousands of hours behind the decks honing my skills....watching other DJ'S .....participating in forums.....learning from others.....making mistakes.......

If you'd have offered me a Kidz Party when I was 16 I wouldn't have looked down my nose at it.... I would have snapped your :Censored: off and seen it as a chance to learn:bang:  ;)

What a :Censored: stupid comment to make.

You're a complete fool if you think us younger lot have been handed stuff (gigs/equipment) on a plate. I take it from your first comment that you think we just get given the equipment? I'm sorry if I have mis-understood your comment but that's utter rubbish. I've spent a lot of money on my equipment, PLI, PAT & ProDub just so I can use reliable equipment do everything legally.

What about learning from mistakes? I may only be 16 I've certainly learnt from mine, and as for learning from others - I regularly go out with other DJs from Northampton that are kind enough to show me the ropes.

I think everyone knows by now what the younger lot on this forum are like, and they know that we work hard and do a good job.

It has been a real pleasure ,for those of us who have been here long enough, to have seen the younger members blossom and develop from very unsure beginnings to the point where they can totally hold their own within the DJ industry.
Why ???... because they have worked hard and benefitted from the very good advice they have received and the opportunities of working alongside very experienced people .
It hasn't always been easy for them, and some have dropped out along the way, for those that remain I have nothing but the greatest admiration

Straight Yes or No would be fine!!

Well, I'm not a typical teen am I? Do I go to town all the time, no? Are my interests and jobs the same as other teen's, no? Point proven.

A gig is a gig to me, I enjoy doing them. Although I do draw the line at really young childrens parties. My forte is teen parties, school gigs and the older generation gigs. Don't get me wrong, If I was getting no work and the only gigs on offer were young children's gigs then of course I would take them.

Trace the thread back Kernow.....the initial offer was of advice....that Charlie has a skill with children and to perhaps develope it as an option to jacking it in....not just me....others too!!

Or maybe he wasn't really packing it in (and buying a Moped...like so many others).

What I am trying to say is there is no better way to get on in this business than to get your feet wet and get yourself some live exposure....in whatever form??AND if anyone on here doesn't think m8 Parties are entertainment then I wouldn't fancy telling Mr.Mayhem....

I couldn't have put it better myself.

Charlie, Ollie and others will be so much further on than Mr Starsoundz ever was at your age, earning more money and doing better gigs and I think this is what irritates him.

They have listened and learned from forward looking experienced DJs. People who run as a business. People who have made profit and people who do not look down their nose at younger members on here.

If Charlie, Ollie and others lived nearer, I can assure you that they would be working for me (If they wanted to) as I know that they are also forward thinking and willing to learn coupled with having the right attitude for the job.

Keep your aspirations going guys and forget the people who have been there and done it and frown on upon anyone doing better or charging more than they are.

Or maybe he wasn't really packing it in (and buying a Moped...like so many others).

What are you on about? I had no intention of buying a Moped you silly man. Where you got such an idea from I don't know.

The reason I was thinking of leaving was to invest my money else where for the time being. It was a silly crazy idea, but if you must know, I was looking at buying Calvin Klein boxers in bulk from a Chinese seller. Sounds silly I know, but I'm always looking out for ways to make money.

Any more outlandish comments you would like to make?

I couldn't have put it better myself.

Charlie, Ollie and others will be so much further on than Mr Starsoundz ever was at your age, earning more money and doing better gigs and I think this is what irritates him.

Your prediction was nearly scuppered as early as last week Darren.....he was jacking it!!

And its not that that irritates me...its people that think DJing is easy and a way to get rich quick...without putting the ground work in!!

I applaud all the other young DJ's out there. There are too many kids happy to sit on their backsides and claim benefits, we should encourage our teens to make a go of it as jobs are becoming harder and harder to find these days!

He did not say he was convinced. We know what Charlie is like, and he has said it himself, he is always looking for ways to make money - and that was purely another one. As others have said, Charlie is always looking for new business ideas. Had I had the knowledge and experience at 16 that I have now, I certainly wouldn't be messing around in this industry and that is coming from someone who is passionate and loves the industry.

Starsoundz, perhaps if you are trying to help, then do just that and don't make a sarcastic or rude comment in the same post and perhaps people will be grateful.

Good work Charly with your gig. I was 21 before I even took up in the business and just wanted to be a club DJ. If someone had suggested the most profitable parts were kids parties I would have ignored it too.

Not what I was suggesting ....but what the hell.Charlie ...in an earlier post was complaining of not having any bookings in Jan/Feb and considering jacking it.In post 32 I suggested rather than doing that he used his rapport with children to keep his eye in and see what else came along.I find it quite profitable as an add on to my business...it keeps my rig busy and provides some leads to adult parties.

It provided some healthy debate and led to showing how different ends of the age scales view the business.....(though for the life of me.... I wasn't pretending to represent all of the DJ's that are over 50).

This would be a boring forum if we all agreed all of the time and this thread made a refreshing change from the endless ones about equipment....most of which I am honest enough to say I don't understand.;)

:agree: 100% (& I'm 55 next Wednesday !!) ;)

It has been a real pleasure ,for those of us who have been here long enough, to have seen the younger members blossom and develop from very unsure beginnings to the point where they can totally hold their own within the DJ industry.
Why ???... because they have worked hard and benefitted from the very good advice they have received and the opportunities of working alongside very experienced people .
It hasn't always been easy for them, and some have dropped out along the way, for those that remain I have nothing but the greatest admiration

I'm not alone, I know ;), so please don't be surprised if many people become very protective when they are subjected to unjustified criticisms, especially those based on their youth !! :)

For the record, I'm very impressed by many of the younger element on here, and try to pass on my experiences where it will be a help to them. All I would say is that in some ways things are easier, with fair quality equipment now cheaper in real terms than it was when I started, and available without even leaving the house. Of course, other things make it harder to get started, so it's a six and two threes I reckon.

If Charlie, Ollie and others lived nearer, I can assure you that they would be working for me (If they wanted to) as I know that they are also forward thinking and willing to learn coupled with having the right attitude for the job.

And if I did misread your post, I apologise for that. The first step to gaining knowledge is to admit how little you know. None of us should ever stop learning.

As to this one, I wonder if you too have misread this. The young ones mentioned have got a superb grounding in this business, but the one thing that by definition they cannot possess, is experience. That's one of the reasons I appear knowledgeable, because I've already made most of the possible mistakes already. :( :o :o :o :o

I don't think anyone's saying the young ones know it all already, simply that they know so much more at this stage than we did, mainly due to the splendid advice offered on here from folk such as Darren, which encourages them to build a rig capable of working in the smartest of surroundings. They're starting from a great position, and I hope and believe they'll make a superb job of building on that.

I agree with Peter about higher quality equipment being cheaper. It goes back to the whole thing of years ago, children were paid alot less compared to today's standards whilst back then it meant a lot more to them, if that makes sense? Nowadays, there's the ones that work for their money but instead of investing it into something that will further help their job/hobby/interests they buy something that's a one off niceity and when it's gone, it's gone - although a treat every now and then doesn't go a miss ;) However I feel that I would prefer to put my money into expensive, high quality equipment that will not only last but that is an investment too and can potentially help me offer a better service. Everyone has to start somewhere, but my mind set, rightly or wrongly is that by buying high quality equipment first off, you're much less likely to waste a ton of money. I know an arguement about this is "ooh, but by doing that you don't make mistakes etc etc". I'm prepared to make mistakes to learn from them, but if potentially losing a lot of money due to naivety, lack of understanding or knowledge when purchasing equipment then i'm not prepared to make those mistakes too regularly (although I have with some of the lighting haha! :D)

Anyway - Enough of the bickering - Merry Xmas! ;) :D

I paid £300 for a Martin Magic Moon, £100 for a Twister 2, and unbelievably, when I wanted another Twister, was advised that two Vastos were a better bet, as I could get two fixtures for the same money! ( And the vastos actually lasted longer )

Yeah, but it was high quality equipment that was mentioned in the previous post, that's why I refered to high quality stuff :)
Actually I said " Fair Quality ", not "High Quality ", but it's close enough for Rock and Roll. ;) :D ( Waits for Steve or Propeller to give the correct quote, of which I am not surprisingly fully aware. :D :D )

And as for post #109, Martin's absolutely correct that an abundance of "Cheap " gear is indeed a lot of the problem, because it leads a lot of young kids to believe they can earn huge money and fame doing what they love, playing music and showing off. In most cases it doesn't work, and ends up either with the kit on Ebay, or working venues for beer money.
