Denon DNHD2500

Hi chaps

My Denon HD2500 at bargain price route has not materialised as they had sold out - they did have them just shifted them at a rate of knots (it was electrovision in St Helens via a trade contact for the doubting Thomas amongst you). However, Why buy new have them on ebay at a good price. I should add its B stock from direct from Denon not second hand.

Has anyone had any experience of these chaps and does anyone know much about the DNHD2500.

They have a statement on the site that says software not included. What software should come with it. I would have thought it was all hardwired or am I being stupid again.

I have been so put off Cortex from the reports of button failure and freezing so I am reluctant to go down that route and I have had numark kit let me down in the past so that's not a route I would want to take.

I bought my DNHD2500 from Why buy new around 15 months ago, I've had no problems to date. Regarding the software issue, be careful, you must have the correct serial numbers to register the unit with Denon (and get the latest software downloads) This IS important. The grey market imports, usually have these numbers removed!! check this before you buy. The unit I purchased from W.B.N. had the numbers intact, and was registered without any problems. You need to use the latest operating software, and the latest version of Music Manager to avoid problems.

They're all deaf. No matter how much you shout at them, they don't actually play anything. If you want a Denon, and foolishly don't fancy a Cortex, then DDS80 is the one for you, unless you can afford a MEP. ( There was one for sale on here, did it sell? )

Despite my complaints about the Cortex, I would still recommend it as it is a great unit. At the price point they sell it there really is nothing out there at the moment which offers the same functionality for the same money. As long as you manage your music collection using their guidelines you won't get any freezing. As for the button issue, bear in mind that when the buttons fail, you're always talking about units which have had several years of pretty heavy use, and there is always the option of using the USB keyboard controls instead.

That'd be Numark then? I've got to agree with this, the DDS is a great bit of kit (again, especially for the price they're now selling for), it makes the Denon look very dated and it is so easy to pick up and use.

It sold - not to me I might add. :( I've heard a few people say that this is the one to go for if you've got the cash, but I've still yet to see one in the flesh. The only thing which puts me off it (other than the price) is it's size and weight (on paper) because unlike the Cortex, DDS or Denon units, you have to either use it as a MIDI controller with a PC/MAC or with the drawer unit, and drawers are big and relatively heavy for a HDC.

It is. Does what it says on the tin. Basic, but if you want basic, it's streets ahead of competitors, and it has two screens. That was the reason I bought it in the first place.
And usually the buttons don't fail, they need just need a bit more pressure applied.
Yes it would. None of the machines are yet perfect, but the Numark is probably the least worst. Probably.
As for the Pioneer, I've not seen it used other than at shows, and I can't comment further. I must see one in action at a gig.

You can upgrade the firmware from the website without registering as I did it for one of my DJs the other day and you don't need to use Music Manager. I just copy and paste the tracks onto the drive and find it less messing around.

I've had bad experiences with WBN as when I bought a CDN22 from them it didn't work, then they replaced it and that one didn't work either? Anyway - we got a refund in the end, but it was a lot of hassle.

I had to re-create my databases on Christmas Eve. I upgraded my PC to Windows 7 and my Music Manager seemed to work fine. When I set up in the afternoon and soundchecked, I chose a track at random to test the sound. It was 10cc 'Rubber Bullets'. When the music came out it was The Sex Pistols 'EMI'. I had to take the whole unit home, put Music Manager on the missus laptop and re-create the whole database again. It worked fine.

If you do a simple copy and paste on to the external HD's then that seems a lot easier and I'll do it that way in future. Am I right in thinking that you'd have to create playlists on the go then?

I have also had problems when not using Music Manager to create a database when new tracks have been added. The other day I compiled a folder on my external hard drive containing a selection of particular tracks I needed for a party, I used a PC running Vista to do this, and didn't run it through MM to create a database. On the night, the folder was 'missing' on my DNHD2500 and could not be used. It reappeared after I run the ex HD through MM to create a database. :confused: .

I haven't used MM in a very long time on my HD2500.

I sync to the internal Hard Disk using MediaMonkey (USB sync) and then rebuild the database on the HD2500 in Database Management. Works for me everytime and I have never had a mixed up track.

In terms of playlists, you will need MM to build these, but it does it really badly as it duplicates the track on the HD2500, wasting valuable space and you get multiple copies when you browse using Artist, Title etc. The playlist entry is an actual track not a pointer (like an m3u file), and this is a shame.

For inspiration I used mediamonkey on my laptop to search for tracks and also build playlist (or take requests) on the fly which i then play out on the HD2500. This way I can also judge what needs to be played before the end of the night and where I need to find / cut tracks ...

This workflow has been working for me for a while now, although i may move to traktor in 2010, as i have been playing with it and I like it a lot.

I don't really create playlists as every time I update the database they get wiped out - that being the problem with not using MM.

Hoho. 120Gb drives are typically not 120Gb, but 120,000Mb. And there are actually 1024*1024 bytes bin a Mb.

So 125,829,120,000 (120,000Mb) / 1,073,741,824 bytes (actual number of bytes in a Gb) = 117Gb.

If I lost anyone there, basically the Denon isn't lying about the number of bytes on the drive, it's just the way that Hard Disks are sold these days, i.e. 120Gb drives are usually not 120Gb, they're actually 120,000Mb, which is different because there should be 1024 Mb in a Gb.
