why some people perceive a mobile DJ in a certain way.

Haydock Thistle last night for new years eve and we were the main event in the adult only (no kids in our room - Wayhay) Racecourse Suite.

Now I have no idea (well I do as I experienced it later in the night when I went for a wander) what they have been using as entertainment but when I arrived we were met by the room manager who pointed at a 4ft table in the corner and said 'Can you set up on there please' - Err I don't think so some how! Luckilly we had been there last year, so knew the layout and pointed out where we needed to set up. Who can set up on a 4ft table tucked in the corner. We soon found out.

There were two other rooms running last night. The Marquee and the Restaurant. The later had some strange chap DJ'ing who looked like he was beamed straight from the 70's - Nice light box to the front and two unrecognisable cabs (one with a blown tweeter - nice). Now the Marquee was what stunned me. They have an install PA system in there so its plug and play. That doesn't mean turn up with a laptop and two battered to death datamoons in the boot of your Rover 45 (and yes he was :Censored: awful and I am not just saying that because I fell out with him later. From out the back of our room you could go outside and hear him in action and see his two people making there best effort at dancing).

We ended up with a number of extra bodies from the other rooms before the end of the night. Brilliant live performance from Kev and the disco just flowed wonderfully. Very pleased with our performance and the rig looked fab. Lot on it last night to cover the room, but nice and tidy.

What put a dampener on the night was the idiot in the Marquee had parked his Rover 45 blocking the exit for our gear, delaying our exit by nearly 25 minutes. We fell out big time as he was a proper prat - long story, a few choice words and an explanation from Myself, Kev and our roadie how he would be the first man in history to have a Rover 45 up his bottom eventually did the trick.

No dude wasn't you (as if i need to tell you that). This guy will have been weird in the 70's too. ;)

He gave us his life story and was rather Alan Partridge in his conversational skills.

It certainly isn't unusual for regular dj's to be ill equipped in all area's, and it is true, thats how we MAY be perceived.
My NYE last night, (second year on trot), room about 12' x 25', had uplighting and my smallest rig ever, along with approx 25 people most of the night. And the comments, "wow, this so much better than my daughters dj's set up in august:eek: , he had flashing spot lights on his speakers, out of the 8 bulbs:confused: , 3 didn't work by the end of the night:zip:.
The clients were thrilled and said they wish they had found me earlier as i put so much effort in to everything and had people dancing, who couldn't walk due to aching muscles by the end of the night!!. Booked again for next year, proof of the pudding and all that...:beer1:

Glad you had a good night anyway:beer1:

Good reports and glad you all had decent nights.
Mine was at my local, packed to the rafters with regulars and a great night all round. I won't do a full review as from now on I am cutting them down (see how long that lasts!).

The only dampener for me was that I have had a cold all week and for some reason, yesterday it seemed to get worse. I had 2 glasses of champagne and was in bed by 5am. Up at 9.30am this morning to get all my gear out and I've just got in. I have to set up tonight for tomorrows wedding....oh happy days eh!

I'm getting really fed up of folk having a pop at us DJ's who are still happily embedded in the 70's. It's a nice, cosy , simple place and we're quite happy here thank you. ;) :p :p

OK, when I've been to Hull and back later ( I wonder if I'll ever tire of that joke? :D ) I'll have to see if I can tell a few more stories of life in the 70's. ;) :D :D

Glad to hear you were flying the flag for us forward thinking, cutting edge wunderkinden. :D :D :D Never mind mobiles stuck in the 70's, we worked in a club in Hull where the install was exactly that!  Wish I'd got pictures, cos how Justin and I didn't get electrocuted is a miracle.

BTW, my gig last night was crammed, fantastic night. The younger chap across the road was tumbleweed. Who says us oldies can't hack it?

We did ask politely, pointed out that we needed to get a trailer in and showed him the road trunk, three times wheeled flight cases, two cable boxes, NJD Quartet set, Trilite, Powerdrives, 4 OHM RW3's, 4 speaker stands, 6 CD boxes, etc that needed to come out. However, he was a :Censored: . What I forgot to add is he shouldn't even have been loading from there as it was the exit to our function suite. Last year we were each given a route in and out to avoid clashes. Different duty manager on this year.

Happy New Year to all on here, as I did take the time to say last very early this moring on my return from the gig. :beer1:

I am so tired. Got to bed at 4:00am and up with a hyper three year old at 7:30am. Mrs DJ is too mashed to function. Brilliant!!!!!

whats a matter with turning up with stuff in the back of your car
all mine goes in the back of my cav apart from speakers that go in my little ally trailer. there were two djs on where i was last night a bloke who was on mainly for the kids then i was to go on at ten was really nervous having to follow someone else on only my forth gig. he was really nice he's been doing it for 30 years and was asking me for advice once he see how packed the dance floor was all night i was there to play upto date stuff but of coarse the old favorites are what got the bums out of seats they loved there 70's disco got loadfs of requests for it

I don't think he was putting anyone down for using a car, read the post, i'm guessing the fact he stated he had a rover was just setting the scene. Alot of very succesful dj's use cars as modes of transport. I think the point was the quality of the guys ability to converse in a civil manner, allegedly, not his choice of transport.

It sure made half the Marquee feel better about themselves when they sloped off into our room for the last hour. Interesting that isn't it. Me and around another 60 people voting with their feet.

I think you will find I am a very fair individual and I have no self esteem issues in terms of DJ'ing. Once you have done more that 4 live gigs then you can start throwing your weight about. My comment was based on experience 12 years of it.

150 capacity Marquee with two datamoons - on the floor Its not about doing it my way, but it was New Years Eve. People pay for a bit of a show.

Thanks Mike that was the point I was making.

I used a car when I set up again and then we went to two cars and then one car and trailer and last night we needed two cars and a trailer as I expanded. However, I would never have gone out like that last night.

Thank You - Someone else who understood my point.

I can fit the smaller rig in the back of my Shogun (which is a car) and do so for some jobs. Not having a go at car usage.
Its about horses for courses and a lack of effort for what for some people is the only really big night out they would have had this year (Edit - last year I still haven't switched over yet.) - what with money tight and all.

Plus he was in the wrong place and was rude.

cosmo1200

rude dj's are the ones who feel they have something too prove, seen too many rude dj's getting a slap from punters, inc a pair of jocks from 'saath landon' who thought they were better than everyone else and ended up having all their windows on their dads merc put in,
a calm attitude no matter how drunk the punters are is the best no matter how great the pressure, this is something I have learnt the hard way and actually works every time..
Ive learn't alot in clubs where the punters can actually talk to yer face .

When people are making speeches maybe you should be turning off any "action" light effects as these can be off-putting for both the person making the speech and the guests that are trying to listen. A simple par can on static or pinspot provides sufficient light for this function.

Okay this has wandered off thread a bit into gear snobbery.

This was just my opinion of the chap and I have seen and known a good number of DJ's, so experienced enough to pass judgement.

Imagine the picture. Its new years eve, its a 150 capacity marquee. You have your finest on looking forward to an evening of good food, good company and a good show.

Some chap is in the corner on a table with two datamoons infront of it with a laptop stuck on the table. This is not gear snobbery. This is not my ego. This is not my wanting to polish my todger because I have a bigger rig.

This is about one thing and one thing only. This is about the craft of being a DJ and a disco show. I don't want to see posts about is a disco a disco with no lights, etc. On New Years Chuffin Eve in a decent hotel, which the guests have bothered to put their tux on for it is about putting on a show and that means sound and light and some form of wow factor.

This is peoples hard earned and as I said earlier some people have had a tough year so it may be their big night out for the year.

New Years Eve is not a show up pocket the money gig - to me its more than that and I think it should mean more to everyone that plugs a deck in on that night. People wash away the bad or celebrate the good of a year just gone and there hopes and dreams ride on the chiming of the clock. Sentimental nonesense it may be, but I believe we owe it to the crowd to make it big, make it bold and most of all make it entertaining.

My vocal artist had to go and stand at one of the dining tables for half the second set as he couldn't fit on the dance floor. Now thats New Year.

i do agree though that new years eve is one night that poeple look to all year for a great night out i was bricking it before i went on as expectations may be high
but do you think also its also the easiest night of the year? what i mean is people choose to go out looking for a good time so push themselves more to enjoy it
the same people that get dragged along to weddings and birthdays they don't
really want to go to and sit all night and not dance

Director is good but perhaps a little pricey. A simple 8- or 12- way IEC switch block will do the job just as well. Assuming, of course, that your effects are fitted with IEC plugs.

If you have all of your effects on at the same time then an idea is to put them all on to one or two circuits so they can be switched on/off together. If you're using effects with lamps in (ie not LED) then I would also highly recomment using surge-protected extensions as this will help prolong lamp life.

I doubt it was his first outing. And if it was he had no place in a 150 capacity marquee in a big chain hotel. I have earned my spurs over the years and earned that top billing spot. Yes he did have trouble getting people to dance after midnight as half his crowd were in my room - it speaks volumes (now not of how good I was, but of how pants he was, as if he had been any good they would never have wandered off and found me).

I am a fair chap and keen to assist those starting out, not to put them down. I lend various bits of my old kit to those who need it as my DJ friends have lent me stuff in the past. This is a community and just like every community there are some that let the side down - yon man last night.

New Year can be an easier night than most. I won't disagree with that observation.

As the ghost of Christmas present said 'Come in and know me better man'. My experience and mistakes are your encyclopedia as yours may well be mine. All I ask is you shake my hand first and then shoot me later if I am not to your taste.

Oh if you had been following me on your fourth outing I would have been your wing man (there in the background if needed, but not on your shoulder as thats pressure). That's how I roll. You may have taken a wrong first impression of me.

Yeah can't argue with that. IEC switch over is simple as pie and if you ever need as plug and play can stick a kettle lead in the iec connector and back t plug in.

This is a community and just like every community there are some that let the side down - yon man last night.

i like the fact that when they were making a speech you could here the motors in my lights turning :)

no mines njd chaos 250watt though nice light
all ebay brought i am on a tight budget

If they are 250's they are the Chaos 2 with fan cooling.

Much better than the original 100w Chaos units I still have hanging around the garage which took an age to cool down. Lovely little unit for the price though and 4 could fill a dance floor and side are very nicely.

I still have 2 chaos two's hanging off the rig. Light is light its a stage by stage thing. Sound first, light second, then upgrade the playout, then some more sound upgrade, then some more light ...... actually its never ending.

Maybe pricey, but it's one of the things I've bought which I regard as excellent value. Similar ones exist, and allow you to switch lights individually and see which are on or off. Splendid piece of kit.

What Neil said in post #39 in particular is spot on. :approve: Subsequent posts aren't far off either.;)

its not that loud that it disturbs the speech but its just a statement about the difference between led and bulb lights

What are bulb lights?

I've read this thread with interest.

The thing I'd agree with the most was that New Years Eve was easier than any other gig I've so far done.

The crowd were all in a good mood, up for a party, out for a good time and danced to absolutely everything (even some of the more inane requests that I played)

I haven't decided if I'll still be DJing in 12 months time, but if I am I'll certainly be looking forward to next NYE

This is turning into gear snobbery.
No, but it is turning into a thread of unreadable claptrap several folks seem to have broken the Shift key on their keyboards & at least one seems to have lost the ability to communicate in English (as per Forum Rules), or punctuate.

surely, if you are offered to work in a 'high class' establishment you are required by law to provide a certificate of public liability insurance, and / or PRS...

so my next question for you is:
How did this chap get the job in the first place, or are we missing something here ?

As most decent hotels do they use an agency. The sales manager of the hotel is under pressure to make as much commission as possible from the event so drive the agency down as low as they can. The agency then take their cut and some get driven so low by the hotels they need to find the cheapest bod they can to make it stack up.

I was off the back of my usual agent subbed from the hotels main agent. It was enough money and easy enough work for us to do it. But then we were specifically asked for as the main event so I had some weight to ensure we got what we needed and as it was booked in June was happy with the fee. Next New Year will be a third more at another venue as we are getting the rep to command it.

I know others have said it but...

No you're not. Who told you that? You should be aware that misinformation is highly frowned upon decent forums such as this one. The fact is that there is no law that says you even have to have PLI. However, it is, or at least should be, best practice to have it. Saying that, I think venues need to be educated in the positives of PLI, PAT, etc as I've been working discos for ten years now and have only ever twice been asked if I had PLI (and only one asked me to produce proof!) and PAT testing queries haven't been many more.
