Dream Job.

I'm sure when you were a child you had dreams and ambitions, some which you have achieved and unfortunately others that have slowly faded away.

When I was younger, I was obssessed with the police force. I watched all the programs, read all the books, had the whole outfit for the occassional fancy dress party and I even visited a few local police stations, not forgetting the London dungeons. ;)

Your going to laugh now, but all of a sudden my dream has come back and I desperately want to work for the police force...preferably a traffic cop. If you were to stereotype me, the idea of me becoming a "traffic cop" can seem somewhat amusing...but I'm actuality pretty keen.

I have even started watching around 4 episodes of Road Wars a day...rather sad as each episode is an hour long.

Another reason I posted this is because school want us to have a brief idea of what we want to become. Obviously those who want to go into medicine need to decide now because you need to learn science etc etc. I thought this was ludicrous. How are we supposed to know now, at 16 years?

What did you always want to do? What would you have liked to do? Maybe your happy now, but if you could what would you change?

Hi charlie, i wanted to be a well known drummer in a band (and do all my own sound rigging) but i gave up. i just had to many complaints from neighbours and down sizes in the house (had to get rid of the drums). now Ive left school and college. Ive decided i don't want a fancy job, i want a secure decent income from something i like doing and have a nice home.

I would love to be a sound enginer for live bands though.

I wanted anything to do with music. It probably stemmed from going to lots of 'family night discos' when I was very little and listening to the loud music and watching the flashing lights. All through school I was told to "Grow Up" by the careers officer when I told him I wanted something to do with music.

Left school and a couple of years later I joined a band, gigged allover the country and sometimes in europe. Left the band, got into DJing. I was also a singles buyer for Virgin retail as well as a Customer Services supervisor. I have made my own tracks too and one of them appeared on a low key electro compilation in 2008 and now I run my own business so......Mr Careers Officer.....UP YOURS!

I wanted to be dj at the age of 14 i used to dj then for my school on Friday nights.
I learnt my trade from a local legend called Lee James who taught me a lot about the business both technically and how to present myself and here we are still going strong today. Lee isn't he retired some 8 years ago which was a shame because he was a very good dj with an excellent voice.

I wanted to be a computer programmer having had my first computer (a Sinclair ZX81) in 1982 when I was 6/7 and being around computers ever since. I worked for Apple in 1992/93 and worked on the regional launch of the Apple Mac PowerPC (a Mac/PC hybrid - good but never caught on!). At the time everyone seemed to want to work in the industry and there were far too few jobs for everyone and the pressure was quite high. I decided to give it in and use the money I made to promote bands and do some DJing. I also topped up my income with a job as a postman.

Would I do anything different? Probably not because I met my ex through being her postman and we have three lovely kids now!

Right from the youngest I can remember I was going to join the Army. My brother was in the same Corps that I joined a few years before me so a slight family thing although I stayed longer than he did.

I also remember a certain "careers" teacher saying that I wouldn't last a day in the Army :D As most of you know I ended up doing my fulltime of 24yrs as I joined straight from school at 16 and officially left in August last year. I achieved the rank of WO2 and the appointment of Sergeant Major so well happy with the way things went.

And how could I forget the wonderful travel opportunities I had....Bosnia, Iraq, Northern Ireland et al ;)

To be honest, I never had any dream job ideas when I was younger.

It wasn't even until I was about 14 or 15 that I decided I wanted to work in a bank. This was partly because my Dad worked in a bank & at the time it was a job for life, and partly because I liked dealing with money. At the school fetes, I was always on a stall, and loved taking the money, working out how much change was needed & counting it out.

A few years later, I wanted to be a DJ on a legal radio radio station, although it was impossible at the time, as London only had two legal stations which played music. That's why I did a bit of hospital radio & then got into pirate radio. When we got caught, we couldn't afford to carry on due to being fined & losing the gear, so a couple of us started running a mobile disco, as this was the next best thing.

The reason I've always wanted to do radio is because I work better in a studio, and theres not loads of gear to lug in & set up (the one part of mobiles I hate). I also have the perfect face for radio.

I might get my wish, as a friend of mine is on the board of a community radio station in Surrey who are on the verge of being given a licence, and he's made it very clear that if they get DO the licence he wants me to do at least one show each week, or more if possible.

When I was 9 or 10 I told my Mum I was going to be a Redcoat one day .Ten years later I was and it has put me in extremely good stead in later years.I dragged myself up from General Duty Red....to Senior Redcoat/Compere in the Hotels Division.

When i was at school i was a bit of a roaster(trouble maker) and i never knew what i wanted to do as i didnt think i had the brains....
I left school and worked in a call centre for a year, applied for the police(failed test by one mark), then began working in restaurants doing bar work and waitressing....
I had always fancied being a nurse but never ever thought i would get into university....I done home care for 8 months and loved it then decided to apply for my nursing, and here i am 3 years down the line about to graduate with a degree in adult nursing :O :O :O :O :O Who would have thought....

So my dream is now to get a job as a full time nurse and complete many more courses of diseases i am highly interested in...

He then applied to join the Met in London, and got in first time. How... I do not know, his attitude has always been appalling (not going to go into that), and his fitness is shocking.

My point is that you might find it easier to get in that way, and transfer to another region, but don't quote me on that :)

I also was really into radio presenting, but kind of gave up on that idea too. Now my dream job is video editor or camera operator, either in TV or film - of which i'm getting closer too with all the work I do & contacts I have. However, I'd still like to DJ :)

I think you may enjoy Hospital Broadcasting.....Its voluntrary and is a worthwhile service....quite easy to get established in too...

There was a hospital called Battle in Reading which has now closed which used to have a radio station. One of my DJs from a while back used to work there. It was quite interesting, but to get a job you had to go and tell the station manager how much you loved doing charity work etc etc and that it wasn't just a platform to get into local radio.

He use to have a producer who would 'drive' the turntables (we are talking a long while back) and he was in a room with a computer monitor and a mic - that was it!

Oh, and it was an NHS hospital.

From a young age i always wanted to be a Firefighter.......A dream which i fulfilled and dont regret it one little bit.
But it is a lot harder than people make out and after seven years called it a day.
Was into broadcasting for a while and spent a few years jumping from Radio station to radio station trying to better myself......something i still enjoy but dont take as serious as i used to.

Interesting thing the whole Pyjama thing.
I was home for Christmas and noticed it a lot.
Mrs S buys nightwear for a living and noticed that the store in Liverpool had completely sold out of Pyjama bottoms.
I'm thinking of introducing the trend to London - I could start at work on Thursday.

I'm kinda nearly almost AM doing my ideal job. I wanted to be a singer since I was in school, but never really did anything about seriously earning from it until 5/6 years ago.

Been in a band with a school friend since 16, but we never really went anywhere/weren't commercial enough, just producing demos. AND NOW the electro sound is all over the charts like a rash, people hearing our stuff go "oh! that sounds like little boots", when it's a track that was track were recorded years before. ARGH!

I've sung in a number of amateur cover bands, earning peanuts, beer money and the (very) occasional totty's phone number, but (ironically) never really got the motivation to make a proper go of it until I had wife & kids, by which time being career-focussed was self-defeating.

IDEALLY I'd like to be lounge singer, doing jazzy standards in Vegas or something, but it looks at this stage in my life I'll have to be content belting out '(s)Mack The Wife'/'Must-Hang Sally' to a bunch of drunken bridesmaids!

Like you said to Scott - go for it. If you start to forge your business early in life (gawd, I make myself sound old!) are business-headed and keep pushing at it, it should be stable enough to support you when you reach the time of life when you need more stability (ie ball & chain & carpet crawlers to support).

Don't get tied to an employed job if you heart is in making it on your own account. A day job will (vastly) suck away your soul.

I left it all to late in life to PURELY do what I love. It's about practicality now, not ambition. (Back to NKR's other topic on here about "would you give up your day-job")
