In what context are you talking about? I will assume its something to do with the cycle of water from basin (lake), to condensation, to discharge as rain, back into gathering in basin again.

If this is the case its an open system as there is no guarantee that the condensed water that forms cloud will discharge back into the basin - meaning the volume of water in the cycle will differentiate at any one time, whereas a closed system would have a constant level.

Do not use any of that as I have assumed what you are looking by the fact its Geography and the three words you have supplied, so I could well be wrong.

And again you are picking the darker regions of my brain.

Infiltration is to do with the rate at which water (or other forms of precipitation) enter the ground. Infiltration rates are obviously affected by the soil types and sub strata below them.

Caveat again - this is a long time ago. However, I can brag an 82% A at A level Geography, a good 15 years ago - bottoms is it that long.

I am sure my answer is not sufficient for GCSE homework purposes. If it is then my god standards have dropped - that answer is just the basics. It surely requires discussion around what affects infiltration rates, saturation points where infiltration becomes impossible and leads to surface flows or ponding, water tables and ground water movements along solid strata.

Or am I just complicating things? :o

Just make sure if you are using Google you actually read and understand what you are copying down.

My Geography has stood me in good stead as a development surveyor. I never suspected when I was your age it ever would, but it helps to understand instrusive site investigations.
