Starcloth or Uplighting?

Hi all,

Hope everyone's had a great day (I have :D). Now before Charlie says "STOP SPENDING!" - I'm just interested in your views ;) :D

I was looking around the net and saw some rigs that use a starcloth backdrop rather than uplighting and vice-versa. I wanted to know what you guys prefer/think looks better? I quite like the appearance of a starcloth backdrop but I also like what you can achieve with uplighting.

My personal opinion is that a Starcloth backdrop works if it is of considerable size, but looks a little pointless if it only just covers the DJ stand.

Uplighting is more impressive if done well, but you're relying on the venue's own backdrop, unless of course you take your own - in which case, you might as well have used a Starcloth!

Uplighting would probably be more versatile and I imagine more of a revenue generator.

Although a black starlight background looks lovely...especially if you have the NJD one and can link it up to the starcloth attached to your booth. I believe Vectis does this.

Darrens got me interested in Uplighting.....but I don't want to ditch the two large Starcloths at the back of the stage.

OK, here is a piccy from my 40th birthday.

I did go quite over the top with what I had in terms of lighting, but it shows the use of 6m starcloth backdrop with 2 S&H booths, uplighting and 10 moving heads (6 on the truss and another 4 round the room.

I thought it might give you an idea of what both would look like, although the uplighting is more towards the sides of the room rather than behind.

Edit - the large screen is installed in the venue and was used for karaoke.

At present I own the Uplighting (47 cans) and hire in Starcloths as and when required.

Both look great, I invested in uplighting first however as it is much more versatile and is more affordable to clients.

To give you an example I had a quote come in yesterday from a lady that wanted something special doing to her venue (200 people going). Now if she had booked the uplihting the quote would have been around the £500 mark. To get the whole room covered in starcloth she would have been looking at the £2000 mark.

Good symmetry....don't know if I love the screen... would probably look better if the image filled the screen.Bet the moving heads set it off superbly.Don't think the picture does the uplighting justice.

The projector is installed and mainly for conferencing and big screen sports - the size of the image was dictated really.

Starcloths are a little more difficult to sell unless you are doing a stage set or working with a live band etc, etc. You really need to look after them and case them up probably as well. Otherwise you will be servicing them every 5 mins. S&H Cloths are the best. They retail about £1000 for a 3m x 6m you will probably be able to get about £100.00 per cloth for hire + rigging (truss and stands)

I've got a relly nice multicolour LED starcloth and also different ways of uplighting behind me (either ADJ MegaBars or Par bars). It all depends upon the scenario and venue and what you think works in that given situation.

As a direct comparison the uplighting gets the nod IMHO, and is also quicker to set up and take down.

for me it uplighting - as it is so versitile and can be made to suit any room.

a background cloth really has to 'fit' the back wall properly, or can look a bit out of place, which if you just have one sized cloth, can be a bit of pot luck to get it to look like a proper fit given the different room sizes/layouts etc.

I have used both uplighting and backdrop,i prefer uplighting as i think the backdrop with the dj booth, white leds looks a bit too much.
The upligting gives it a different dimension,but all down to personal opinion.

Well since he's such a shy and retiring little flower, he does seem to need a bit of Dutch Courage to bring out his finer points. ;) :D :D :D And it's probably cheaper to meet him in a bar than a Car Park. (Though perhaps only marginally. :D )
