Rack Shelves or Just Ears?

Do you use rack shelves to give your gear extra support or just rely on the eas to hang it.

I ask as a new rack has arrived and the CD player drawers are about 2cm off the bottom of the rack suspended only by ears. Wondering whether if needs a tray to support it?

I've only ever used the ears.

Depends on the weight i wouldnt have thought that cd drawers needed supporting.Amps definitely do but i have found most outboard equipment ie processors etc dont really need it.

Usually rack ears only, but if there's a big gap, use a suitable sized piece of firm flightcase foam (1-2mm thicker than the gap) to support it.

We've never used rack "shelves" to support equipment (other than one in the comms room for a couple of routers!)

However, within pro audio, it is standard best practice to use rear rack support, particularly for heavy old class A/B amplifiers. I'll always rear rack macrotechs, as they are stupidly heavy (even the babies-602 & 1202), the additional benefits of doing so are being able to place the patch under the bottom amp for tidy cabling and to facilitate quick swap outs without up-ending the rack.

I've never bothered supporting class D amps at the rear, not outboard/eq/playback racks, as the individual items aren't heavy and with the exception of a rack of GEQs, all the kit is different depths.

How do you 'rear rack'? I have an Inter-M amp which is very heavy and would love to know how to do this as I have always been worried about the weight.

The flightcases are fitted with a rear rack strip mounted onto both of the inner sides at the rear. You must get the dimension exactly right though, not a problem with macros as they're all standard.
