Snow snow snow part 2

Was looking up here although plenty of snow around it hadnt actually snowed for 24 hours. Then looked out the window and whack all gone ice rink again on me. And to make things worse Northamptonshire council just announced they are out of grit and are waiting for supply.
Yesterday they where on the local news saying how they had huge supplies etc etc.
M1 was clear but all my local roads are like blocks of ice.

Whats it like near you? Im in Northampton milton keynes is pretty bad but im hearing its really different depending where you are. 20 miles away they didnt have a single snowflake, we where ok until this week.

I think absolutely everywhere is the same. Major roads clear, but all local roads unsalted. I know Mr Angry of Reading was giving his council some grief ( quite rightly) cos his Salt Bin was empty.

We're fine here, cos there's been no drifting, and if you drive carefully it's OK.Very few hills as well, but twenty miles away, the usual blackspots are an absolute nightmare. In some ways, main roads are worse, cos everybody gets on 'em and causes jams.

Everywhere here is like an ice rinks...pavements the lot. I havent seen a gritter in 2 weeks here. Main roads are still slippy but side roads are even worse. It has snowed here since before xmas and its rained so its all frozen over and its so slippy. Black ice everywhere. Getting sick of scraping car every morning and making sure it will start due to cold.

It's terrible where I am. Like you lot, it's an ice rink. I live in a cul-de-sac and it's not been treated at all. I've been out this morning and spent a while clearing snow and ice off the van. Luckily it started up straight away but I don't think I will be going anywhere as it is so icey. That means that no Karaoke tonight, cancelled gig on saturday and I doubt very much if I will be doing Karaoke on sunday either.

Right, so let's get this clear. I live in the middle of nowhere, and am having no real trouble getting out to most relatively nearby areas. Wife has got to work every day without any major tribulations.

Update to here still no gritters and now apparenty the watermain has burst on the slip road to the m1 lol just looked at the picturers quite pretty really. 3 lane skating rink on the south bound carriagway. Just on my way out to the dentists so will give a main road update after 3.

We had the first heavy snow on Wednesday night. Had to close the class early at 8pm and only 6 people had turned up anyway. I had less than 5 miles to drive home and I went via the main road and found it closed by the police just outside the village on a steep hill; so I took the back roads which had not been gritted and had several inches of snow and got home fine. Did a line dance party last night (me and 16 very nice ladies all in a room together) and the side roads were very slippy but passable with care. Very dodgy unloading the van and carrying the gear into the hall. Today the roads and pavements which have not been gritted are litterally like glass. Very treacherous. Have been out to do some shopping but no gig tonight; so staying in!

On a not totally unrelated subject, just before Xmas, I broke the habit of ( nearly) a lifetime, and changed my default footwear from racing slicks, to a more comfy treaded and cushioned style. The difference in roadholding is almost unbelievable, and a huge improvement in safety.

I did my Wedding Reception last night, it snowed whilst I was there working (25 miles from home), it snowed all the way home and it's still snowing now!

I spent 4 hours moving snow yesterday from our cul-de-sac with another neighbour and another hour moving it from the drive.

I then went and set up early for todays gig and had to move more snow from the path to get in the Hotel...great.

I saw a great thing earlier.

There was this small child on a wooden sledge / toboggan type thing. Being pulled by 2 absolutely beautiful huskies.

Another thing.

If anyone hasn't driven since the snow started, make sure you clear your roof as well as the windows.

For one, it stops the poor unfortunate behind you getting covered in it.

& secondly & more importantly it could save you from having an accident.

I was on the way up to High Barnet this morning when I saw a car that had smashed into the wall by Barnet tube station. It's roof was clear, but the windscreen was covered in snow (looked like it hadn't been cleared since Tuesday, although it must have been as the car wasn't there last night).

What happens is, when you have your heater on, convection currents cause the heat to rise. This in turn causes the roof of your vehicle to warm up. The layer of snow in contact with the roof then melts, leaving a layer of slush between your roof & the rest of the snow. Deceleration causes this to slide frowards, which will then block your view & you are in effect driving blind.

This is the second instance of this that I have come across since the snow started, the other was to my mothers neighbour. Thankfully she managed to brake safely & didn't hit anything or have anything hit her.

Always amazes me too. The first day we had snow even the main road was covered. Still managed to travel the 44 miles to work, even overtaking an over cautious driver (not the most sensible thing I know).
On the way home it's necessary to negotiate a steep hill to avoid crossing a busy main road. Only once last week was I beaten by it.

Moral of the story. Keep the revs low, only accelerate very gradually (if at all) etc and you shouldn't have too much problem getting about even if you don't have 4 wheel drive or any form of traction control.

Well down here in Cornwall, with a temperate climate and surrounded by coastline giving an abundance of salty atmosphere, we don't see snow very often........but when we do :eek: . Garden is still under about 3 inches and has been for about 3 days. Had to diff-lock my 4wd, for the first time in memory today, just for a trip to Tesco. The shelves are nearly empty and noticeable is that not only is there no bread, but absolutely no bread-making mixes, flour or yeast either. Overheard a guy instore say "It's like 'the end is nigh' " :)
We're due a severe second instalment tomorrow, and it would have been good if the first had departed first, but seems unlikely.
There does however seem to have been a profuse explosion of community spirit. The best example locally is that Shelterbox have taken a break from shipping overseas aid and have been using their 4x4's to transport surgeons, doctors & nurses to and from the hospitals.
Still it can't last forever, can it ?? ;)

Besides which it's a legal requirement! The highway code states that you should clear any snow that could block your view or fall in to the path of other traffic. It's a MUST not a recommendation.
Pity there are so many drivers who are clueless about the highway code not to mention pure common sense, which is where Steve is coming from.

Same here, but that's pretty much the last of it now (in my area, at least).

Today's temperature will reach 2 degrees...allowing the thaw to continue. On Wednesday & Thursday it will be 4 degrees, and up to 6 degrees on Friday (and no colder than that on Friday night!).

I don't remember this thaw being forecast, certainly not to this extent anyway, so another spell of snow could still happen.

Snowing here too, the bus company that I use to get to school (run by Northampton Council) have announced they've cancelled transport to Campion School for today (my school) and possibly tomorrow. Can't get in as Dad has the landrover and the Merc & Corsa aren't good in the snow. What a shame! :D

exeter missed it last night, but was horrendous just outside of the city last night, my son got stuck in it after work ,he couldn't get home and had to walk to a friends and stay there for the night. we were lucky it rained all night and washed the snow away
