Right, I've got to go out and post a couple of items now. As the easiest and preferred option nowadays seems to be to use paypal for payment, how do I get folk to send me money thus? I've done it the other way,. but nobody has ever sent me any.

You should give them your e-mail address then you check paypal, when it's in, then you send it.

Didn't dare hope it would be that easy. Ah, gotcha in that respect. In this case, not applicable. Many thanks young sir. :beer1:

Log on to your paypal account and the request payment is the 3rd tab along the top bar, simple. Alternatively email your customer and give them your account name, if you can persuade them to send you the payment as a 'gift' or a 'debt' you will get the full amount without either party having any commission deducted.

You see Tony, I knew it would be complicated. :( :( :o :o

Account name? That can't be my email, is it? Sorry for being a bit dim about this.

Edit again, think I understand it.

For someone to send you money through Paypal, you just need to give them the email address your Paypal account is set up with.

Alternatively, if you know or can find out THEIR email address, you can log into your Paypal account, click on the "Request money" tab at the top, and can then enter their email address, the amount requested and the purpose of the payment. This will email them an invoice with a link to pay you.

Either way, as soon as any money is sent to you through Paypal, you will receive an email, so all you have to do is to keep an eye on your email inbox rather than logging into paypal every 5 minutes.

I think they have changed it now so that the only way to send a "Gift" is if you pay the transaction charge on it.

If you want to receive money via PayPal then yes.

Personal payments: Payments to friends or family are free when funded by bank account or PayPal balance. If the payment is funded by credit or debit card then fee is charged to the recipient, however the sender can choose to pay this instead. Please note you must select the ‘Personal’ payment tab within the ‘Send Money’ payment flow to qualify for this rate.

Purchase payments: For payments made as a purchase of goods or services, the recipient (seller) will be charged a fee. For more information visit www.paypal.co.uk and click on the ‘Fees’ link at the bottom of any page.

PayPal Fee Structure (https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside)

I find this quite a handy tool for quickly working out the charge: PayPal Fee Calculator (http://www.tutv.co.uk/fresh/bitsandpieces/paypalcost.php)

Peter,
You can add Paypal buttons to your website, and the final page will take them to Paypal, where they pay, which goes directly to your account.

If this is for a personal transaction, then you can obviously give them your email address / Paypal name and expect them to send it;

But it's easier to "Request Funds" :approve:

I offer both; the only problem I've found with bank transfers is consolidation.

I can't remember the last customer who managed to put their booking reference into the 'reference' field :bang: I guess using a percentage deposit (therefore differing amounts) would be better than my fixed £50/£100 method.

Well I just checked my last two BT's and they said:

FASTER PAYMENTS RECEIPT REF <blank> £50.00

BANK GIRO CREDIT REF <customer name> PL, <invoice no> £322.00

So - completely reliant on the customer putting something useful in the reference field.

I can contact the bank for more information about a credit, which takes an age and usually results in an account holders name, but this is all I get online or on the printed statement.

On letterheads.

All my incomings have some kind of reference which enables me to trace them.

People get too scared about fraud- yes, you need to be careful and not do anything stupid, but at the same time you cant let it limit what you offer as a business or even let it impact on your personal life.

You clearly have not been the victim of fraud. I had a card skimmed and lost thousands (which I got back). It happened at a time I was moving house so my eye was not on the ball as amounts were going out everywhere anyway. They got a lot as I had a large float in my account to deal with any issues with the move. Was sickening!!!! Has a real impact on how you do things.

My DOB is not on any social site or here for that matter - why?

My address is on my cards. My name is easy to get. Once you have my account details all you need is my DOB and you are almost into my account. Anyone looking at you facebook account might be able to get your mothers maiden name with people leaving message like hey cousin how are you.

Think about it - its very, very very easy to get screwed over. Advertising your bank account details to anyone other than booked clients is quite frankly insane.

Wise words.

Not really.

Finding a name and address is easy but even with a sort code and account number a fraudster is still a long way from accessing your account unless you are incredibly stupid and use an easy to guess password or combination of information.

With most internet or telephone banking these days you need to enter at least 3 pieces of information (e.g. for my account I have to enter an ID number, a passcode and a registration number), and assuming someone was able to guess all of these (even though 2 are randomly generated), then they would still need my debit card, pin number and my card reader (see below) to move any money out, one of which is locked in my safe!

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Technology/Pix/pictures/2007/08/29/card_reader460.jpg

Accessing an account is easy if you let it be so, just like stealing an unlocked car, robbing a poorly secured house, cloning a card etc.

.

Don't get me started on those. I want tp pay someone on here, and because the money's in the Disco account, I can't do it , because I don't have a card reader. :bang: Neither can I move it to the business account, for the same reason. The business account doesn't use one of these, and I can pay from there easily. Progress, eh? :(

See how secure your money is? Even you can't get at it! :D

Seriously, I know Rob used to work in a bank but I have spent nearly 10 years in FS as well, security is very good unless you use silly passwords and get careless with your data.

People are paid to trick you out of information so they can build a profile on you, hence the reason banks have/are moving away from using information such as "mothers maiden name" or "place of birth" towards randomly generated passwords and physical security such as card readers.

Vectis, dunno if it's cos many of my customers are business, but details and name etc always shown on my bank statements.

Same with My personal accounts etc, but it does vary dependant on the bank, but I usually know the sender's name, and often; account number.

People get too scared about fraud- yes, you need to be careful and not do anything stupid, but at the same time you cant let it limit what you offer as a business or even let it impact on your personal life.

The question is, if someone has unauthorised access or knowledge of your business account, can they find your personal account, or is there no connection with them whatsoever, do you think?

My address is on my cards. My name is easy to get. Once you have my account details all you need is my DOB and you are almost into my account. Anyone looking at you facebook account might be able to get your mothers maiden name with people leaving message like hey cousin how are you

:approve: Agreed, I am fully aware of.

I don't usually like giving My date of birth out to websites (non bank/official related), such as ITunes, hotmail etc.

security is very good unless you use silly passwords and get careless with your data.

Or unless you're duped by a scam email, or unless there's a hidden gadget on the cash machine you use, or unless you let your card out of your site for one second when paying for something & it gets skimmed, or unless there's someone in the road hacking into your wireless internet (even if it IS password protected).

The list goes on & on.

I have one of those card readers.

Do you need to use it for every internet banking transaction, or is it subject to random audit.

Also, I have begin to wonder whether the code is the same every time, and it has a code for each type of activity.
(eg : 123456 for moving funds and 555567 for paying the gas bill)

The card reader is only available as far as I know to Natwest customers, Peter.
