80s gig tonight

Well as previously mentioned, I have spent ages shovelling snow from the close and the drive to give me a sporting chance of getting to tonights gig.

I set up early as I live on a hill and wanted to make sure I could get the van back up the hill and they have gritted the road since I came back so it is still a bit iffy, but passable.

Anyway, the gig is a 40th birthday for the wife of one of my ex DJs and it is mainly 80s tunes with an 80s theme and fancy dress. I normally wear fancy dress but didn't have time to get anything delivered this time, but will take some photos hopefully later.

I am really looking forward to it as I started DJing in the 80s and it was probably when I was buying the most music. I think people just think of the 80s as cheesy tunes, but there is so much more to it and hopefully people will appreciate that tonight as most are around the same age.

They were decorating the room as I left with 80s 12" single covers, bowls of 80s sweets and rubiks cubes on all the tables.

Should hopefully be a good gig! :D

I love doing 80s gigs. Always include the electro-pop stuff (personal favourite is OMD's Enola Gay!) as well as the cheesy 80s stuff (Erasure, Kylie, Communards). Definately my kind of gig.

For 80's music i have loads. Ive invested in all the mastermix 80's CD's including the 80's night, 80's NO1 singles which covers a bit and also other 80's compilations and lots of artists albums. and ive done a few 80's theme nights.

Er no! Jefferson Starship evolved out of Jefferson Airplane, and by the time Starship arrived, none of the original Airplane members were still in it. The common denominator was the voice of Grace Slick, but its a bit like saying The Beatles and Wings were the same group!

Not really - there is sooooooo much stuff to play from the 80s. I started at 8pm and did little sections of less dancey pop, rock, new romantic, ska, alternative, cheese etc. The food came out at 9pm, but I had people dancing before, during and after the food. To be honest, I was trying not to get them up by playing 'listening' music, but they were all up for it.

I won't tell you that I played Bros and Jason Donovan...:bag:

Anyway, a very good night and I enjoyed every second of it. I didn't play all the really obvious tunes until after 12 and had loads of requests too.

I posted the Oops upside your head piccys to show all the different outfits. ;)

Birthday girl is in the Madonna outfit and her husband who used to DJ for me is Vyvian. They had some uplighting provided by a friend of theirs for free and a projector with lots of 80s images being projected onto a wall.

The tables were decorated with rubiks cubes and 7" singles and one wall was adorned by 12" single covers. There was also a table full of sweets!

As well as the 80s music, I also played a few TV themes - The Fall Guy, A Team, OFAH, Dukes of Hazard and also a few film themes while they were eating and not dancing.

I got all the men to sing "You've lost that loving feeling" at the end to the birthday girl, Top Gun stylee as one of the guests had the uniform on too.

Right at the end, we had a live link up via the Internet to some friends of theirs in Australia who could see the party and we could see them sipping champagne and swimming at 9am Sunday morning.

Overall, a really enjoyable evening.
