Teddy Pendergrass died today aged 59.

Exactly the same as Robert Bell with Kool & the Gang.

Harold Melvin was the founder member, who was a musician and not lead vocalist. Hence it's the old theory that everyone associates the group with the lead vocalist (Teddy was the lead vocals).

The same applied with Kool & the Gang, Robert Bell (aka. Kool) was founder member but concentrated on his musical ability, They went through several musical phases during the course of their recording career, starting out with a purist jazz sound, then becoming practitioners of R&B and funk, progressing to a smooth pop-funk ensemble.

They then recruited a lead singer James 'JT' Taylor in 1978. A lot of people think that 'JT' is in fact 'KOOL' but as explained it is Robert Bell.

Harold Melvin was actually the original singer, until he replace himself with John Atkins. Teddy was recruited as a drummer, but stepped up to the plate when Atkins quit. In 1976 he tried to get the name of the band changed to Teddy Pendergrass & the Blue notes, but quit when this failed.
I thoroughly recommend: A House on Fire: The Rise and Fall of Philadelphia Soul by John A. Jackson , a cracking read! Definitely one of my favourite soul singers.
