Improving sound system and speaker setup

I was wondering if anyone could suggest a reasonably priced (max £1000) way I could upgrade my sound and speaker setup as I am currently working with a pair of passive speakers on tripods but the mid and highs on one of them have almost comletely gone and also I just want to increase and imporove the sound quality for the small to medium sized venues (max 200 person functions) that I cater for. I have recently upgraded my lighting but I am a bit thin on the ground for cash to improve the sound - I am now realising I should have probably improved my sound system before the lighting (with hindsight!)

I am particularly interested in active speakers as that way I could save myself from carrying my 1000W amplifier with me to every event and can have more control over the sound. I have been looking at active tops and bins together (with poles) and pairs of actives with an additional bass bin. If actives are just going to be out of my price range I wont mind looking at passives instead and I will just put up with having to carry an amp with me. I'm just looking at a way to improve my sound without breaking the bank but everywhere I go the prices seem to be out of range or not suitable. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought a new system before Xmas for cover in my estimation up to 200 persons. Barn Dance/Line Dance/Disco/PA use.

I bought the much knocked Peavey set up of a pair of passive UL15s and the 1200 watt mixer amp XR8600 to feed my mixer into for around £1,000 brand new.

You can pick this equipment up considerably cheaper secondhand.

Probably not the choice of many ( or any ) on here but certainly packs a mighty punch for 2 speakers and your budget.

Thats quite frankly a stupidly good sounding system for the money. First time I heard one locally I thought it was an HK system that cost at least twice that.

Its an absolute no brainer.

I almost wish I needed another system as I'd snap that up myself.


Or you could get a pair of passive peaveys...............

The big bonus with that suggestion is the fact you'd have a back up.

If the amp goes in the B52, its end of party time.

I have decided to buy 1x 15" omnitronic speaker which is exactly the same as the ones I currently have. This will replace the one that has blown its mid and highs and will be a temporary solution until later in the year when I will look at a more permanent speaker upgrade and will then consider some of your suggestions.

You mentioned having a 1000w amp. What is it, because if it's a good 'un, then a pair of decent passive cabs might go a long way towards what you want.
