First of all i make no apology for this being another price orientated thread ;) so anyway heres the jist of it.

This is mainly for those of us who use set packages, bronze, silver and gold etc with varying amounts of equipment for each.

Im guessing that most of you who do have the bronze at the cheapest end, and the gold at the most expensive (or however you label them up), now what do you do when you get a venue who has their own gear?

Ive been at one today for a wedding fayre, and to be fair they are running a very sweet set-up (denon dj box, martin scanners over the dance floor, led pars, rcf sound system and everything is in pristine condition).

So, on the basis that you dont technically need to take anything other than your usual walk-in stuff....would you charge even less than your cheapest package?

we don't use packages but in the circumstances you describe i would go out for the basic package deal which would be equal to our minimum price for any event

The first thing to check, as I'm sure you have ;) , is that the install equipment is available for your use, and is not reserved solely for a resident DJ ?
I have actually encountered a similar set-up in a Hotel in St. Ives a couple of years ago, which belongs to the venue and is included as part of the function room hire.
Effectively it was just a walk in for me, but I quoted (and got :) ) my full usual fee for a wedding disco.It doesn't happen too often so I regard these situations as fortune smiling, and a bonus to the DJ.

At the end of the day the client is paying for our expertise and ability to entertain ?.

Yes, they are paying for your expertise, but also for your time, plus an element of your fee is to cover wear and tear on your equipment.

A walk-in job will be less time for you and there is no wear and tear.

We are slightly different in that, because our DJs are employees, each element is broken down as a fee, so I wouldn't be paying my DJs for a set up, and I'm guessing that you will have a set fee for a night - regardless of number of hours (but up to a maximum?) rather than paying yourself by the hour.

The actual situation arose after I had my quote accepted and deposit paid.
The couple concerned specifically wanted me as their DJ, having seen me in action at a wedding they had attended about 6 months previously, as guests :confused: . Although neither of them resided in the local area.
I only became aware of the installed equipment at the pre event meeting with them at the hotel ,as the manager showed us around. They asked if I could incorporate it into my performance and I said I would try my best ;) :o
The meeting went so well that they even invited me to attend the ceremony ,five-course wedding breakfast..... and a dip in the hotel pool with them and their guests before the evening entertainment :eek:.
Well it seemed rude not to accept their most generous offers :D
I did feel a little awkward, but the subject of discount never arose, my fee was paid in full, and at the end of the evening had the groom and his father wrestling with the microphone in an effort to be the first to announce their thanks to me.

As I say it doesn't happen very often, so it might seem wrong to look gift horses in the mouth.;)

Agreed.

The main thing we're being paid for is our time, as well as the physical work of lugging in & setting up all the kit. Walk ins involve less time & virtually no physical work, so this should be reflected in the price.

Back in the mid eighties I started a nine year pub residency which was a walk in. The pay was £30 a night compared to the £60 I charged for normal mobiles.

However, the walk in was only 2.5 hours & there was no gear to take or set up, so the hourly rate worked out at more than I got for normal discos!

I would charge £180 - £225 for four hours. It is actually a nice change not to have to fart around with equipment especially if you could go out after. Some of my city gigs are like that.

Only down side is if something goes wrong with the install kit. I can reroute my rig in a matter of about 30 seconds to have noise back, which is not so easy when its not your rig and its installed.
