Well thought I would update you on how my digital switch over is going.

I now have 1,500 tracks on the HDD and the same on the mirror HDD. I have taken to updating both as I transfer tracks off the laptop as to do the first copy from master to back up took nearly half an hour. I have managed half a CD box.

Next job will be transfering my regular stuff onto the Denon's HDD too.

This is slow progress as tagging everything methodically as I go along. Very boring.

Indeed it is. ( Resists urge to use insuulting smilies and phrases such as "ner ner ner ner ner " :D :D ). However, as I've told you on many occasions, the effort spent now will repay you a thousandfold. ;) ;)

mp3tag.de has been a blessing for me.

It reads the tracks or CD, connects to a database and only needs the odd correction.

It fills majority of ID tags, but not BPM or genre (if I remember right)

Yes audiograbber is very good (recommended by Steve) just be aware with digital files that corruption can occur so dont go thinking you can go out on the next gig with digital and that they all will play.

I suggest you check manually that all the tracks you are going to work with regularly do actually start to play.

Sometimes it picks all the detail up - other times its a load of typing, but its working okay so far.

My promos every week are never done right. Most of the time, I'll pick out what I want, & leave the rest for a 'rainy' day. There's about 1400 tracks in that folder at the moment :bang:

I couldn't get on with Audiograbber. I did most in MM, a few in Windows Media ( which is not a high grade programme. ;) ) and Audiograbber for the escapees.

Yes, agreed...it IS boring but it is well worth doing properly. Once the tracks are on your system and working ok, they will never have to be done again unless for some reason (whatever that may be), they start mucking up.

I do a lot of my stuff in either MM or Windows Media.

If your doing it from scratch, I'd highly advise adding BPM, Key and album artwork too, so you haven't got to go back in, and so them at a later date.

My club days are over and I never had BPM on my CD's back then so I could probably mix by ear if it came to it. Plus not much call for it at weddings.

Right. 1,544 tracks loaded up and its off on the road tomorrow night. Funky monkey. I will have all the CD's with me too, so its just a trial run to see how I get on with it.

I have only managed to get half a CD box on to it so there will be loads I haven't got on there yet. However, I have tried to get sections of music onto it, so a lot of my popular 70s Disco, 80's and party stuff is on there, plus a load of my most recent stuff.

The thought process being I can at least work through sets and use my most recent stuff early on in the night to get used to the thing. It will hopefully debug any problems finding tracks etc, whilst it is not loaded up with 15,000 of the things.

It will be a phased switch over and once I have managed to get everything on it I can drop 4 of the 6 cd boxes and carry two with our most popular stuff in riding in reservein case something dies.

For peace of mind if you get time just check your major tracks that you use are working ok--

Point taken I already plan to have the CD decks loaded with two get out of jail cards in case something falls over.

Good luck with it! I was pretty convinced I didn't want to go digital due to the costs involved - HOWEVER - I did and it's so much better than using CDs! Much easier to locate tracks, can load up requests in a matter of seconds!

I use the Cortex for backup incase the Denon & PC fall over, but also have CD draws as last resort too, with small Slappa case of popular tracks.

That's what I did when I went to play out totally digital for the first time - I was cacking myself that something would go wrong - It was all very strange and felt a bit 'naked' until i got into it. I also had a couple of memory sticks with set lists and current top 40 on it just in case the :Censored: really hit the fan.

I don't quite get how Denon get away with basing all of their searches off the start of the artist names/track titles when the rest of the world (Cortex, Numark, etc) all offer free text search which picks up on any part of the track or artist name that you care to type in without significantly impacting on search performance.

that's what the string search is for. I guess they assume that most of the time you will know who the artist is or what the track is called, but if you need to search by a specific word F12

If you press f12 on the keyboard it puts you into string search mode which searches all tags.

That's because there have been quite a few changes that were implemented in the firmware upgrades.

If I was you, I'd have a look on the Denon site and read what changes were made with each firmware upgrade.

I think the best and quickest way to rip, is to rip to .wav first, then batch convert to MP3.

How is that quicker Jeff? Surely that means doing everything twice?

....its quicker because its much quicker to rip to .wav, as you're not actually compressing anything..

and then you can leave it batch converting unattended, ie, you can leave it overnight.


also with this method, you get a lossless version aswell, for archiving :)

I still have some of those. :o :o I just watch out for the artist appearing in the title field. ;)

Okay so its been road tested and the outcome is.

I am loving my blue backlit keyboard - how cool did that look.

My MP3 file names need reviewing as searching the folders was a nightmare as some MP3 file names start with numbers, some with the artist and some with the title of the track, so some serious tidying up to.

On the whole though I love it.

Biggest problem was I am knackered from a weeks work so couldn't think. Was stood there thinking that track off the blue CD, you know number 3 on disck 2, and the Denon just looked back at me with a 'Errrr give us a clue expression'. I felt like a punter asking for a song 'you know that one der der der derrrder der der der der - with that woman, what do you call her'.

Anyway as I had my CD's and had the already ripped ones in its own section I used the CD cases to find the track then line it up. It will work better once I construct some play lists.

Anyway it was weird having 4 faders (2 hd and 2 cd) on the go and had to watch my cross fade assignments. Even started getting cocky and reassigning left hand faders to cross fade b and got really confused so tried to keep it simple.

Anyway good night and good trial all in. Ran like a dream to the Denon.

By the way the screen is arse as you have to wait for it to tell you the whole name, etc.

In answer to Excalibur. I am going to buy a Cortex at some point in the future too as now all my music is going onto hard drives I can use one at home for parties and general listening.

I don't think it is mate, you get used to it honestly once you know what you have on the system.

The tagging thing again - When I do mine, firstly on the main window of the MP3, I just have the title of the track (not Artist and Title). Then once you have clicked properties and are on the full list in the MP3, I make sure that the title is EXACTLY the same as it is on the other bit. I then check that the Artist is correct and rather than have the album title in there aswell, I put the Artist name in there. I delete the track number and set the genre to what I think. It all makes it a lot easier for me. If I have the a remix of the same track then I will add REMIX in capitals after the title on both windows of the MP3.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before but I take out all the little ? , ! , ' etc
For example: On the first window in the title it may be something like It's Ok- and then on the second window it may look like It's Ok? so I will make them both Its Ok.

I hope that makes sense. As someone said to me when I started using the digital method....there's no point having thousands of tracks on there if you can't find them because they aren't tagged correctly.

I rip in ITunes using the WAV Encoder, then move them into the folder I want (using windows explorer), and erase them from the ITunes "Libary".

I then re-do all the tags manually with the correct information using Tag and Rename (http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm) from softpointer. This is a purchased system that costs around £20-£25 ish, and can do a lot more than WMP and ITunes etc.

Beware of WMP Artist tags, as they appear to be non existant anywhere but Media Player itself.

ITunes only seems to recognise tags if they are written by ITunes itself.
