Clogged up ears

Hi guys,

I have a clogged up ear due to ear wax and I have tried everything to remove it, Olive oil overnight, ear wax removal which seems to help a little.

Does any of you guys have any tips on fast ways to remove wax?

Also, Have any of you had to go to a gig with bad hearing?

If you can get an appointment with your doctor quickly, get them to syringe your ear(s).

I had some similar problems a few years back and ended up getting my ears syringed: instant and wonderful! A very odd feeling, but strangely nice (a bit like scratching an itch is nice, if you know what I mean! :lol:)

I could hear a pin drop half a mile away after that!

I had a trip to "E.N.T" at hospital a while back due to a perferated (sp?) eardrum and I was talking to the doctor and he suggested having them syringed for bad wax...

You have to olive oil your ear(s) for 7 nights before you can have them done though.

I've never put olive oil in my ears in my life! I did use the OTC remedies though (Otex, if I remember rightly) but didn't work. They do insist that you use other remedies before they will syringe, but if you go in and say that you've tried them and they haven't worked, they should syringe straight away.

My mum went 2 days ago and they said olive oil for 7 nights before.

Depends who you speak to at the doctors.

I used bicarbonate of soda eardrops 4 times a day for two days and then went to the doctors. The syringing is great.

What I meant was: if you go to the doctor complaining about bunged up ears, they will tell you to go away and use an ear wax softener. Some doctors may say use an OTC remedy and, yes, olive oil is a home remedy ear wax softener. The wax often needs to be softened to enable them to syringe effectively.

However, not all doctors insist on olive oil, and not all insist on 7 days.... it depends on the doctor and the individual's ears.

Again... didn't mean my last post to sound like I was biting your head off!!!

Anyway, as Steve says in his opening post that he has been using both OTC and olive oil and it hasn't worked, it should already been softened to allow them to syringe successfully.

All the doc's i've had have said 7 days.....and you are correct about making the wax soft. I think they say olive because most families have it at hand.
Others options stink.......but there is on on the market that desolves over night....

Very much doubt this - as it will do more damage to the internals and will leave it very sore and painful - believe me I know.

A long time ago a work mate (:mad:) place engine oil in my ear muffs and it soaked my ear which results in my ears clogging up on a regular interval, we are talking every two years and I went in once and did say (rather foolishly) I had been putting olive oil in for a week thinking I could trick them........it ripped the wax from the inner tissue away from the ear causing me a lot of pain - bit like someone wrapping a baseball bat around your ear. :eek:

Go to doctor and have it syringed. Its quite theraputic and great when all the lumps come out - i do it once a year.

Do not use the drop things as it makes it worse.

Do not submerge your head under water!! and do not fiddle with it - just get used to it as you may damage your ear.

Doctors do say to use ear softener before getting them syringed as it makes wax come out quicker if syringing is required. Syringing isnt highly recommended due to chance or perforating eardrum with high pressure....Happened to few patients i had on my community placement.
You can only phone doctors and ask for appointment and see what he says...

I've suffered over the years with my ears and had a small operation a couple of years ago. The doctor/consultant asked what I did for a living and when I told him, he said that people that work in this industry are more susceptible to wax as music vibrates the ear drum causing more wax to be formed. (or something like that anyway!)

It's starting to annoy me now but I am going to just have to see what the doc says.

if i were you i would start putting oilve oil in it now and book directly with the triage nurse for four days time.

you will get used to it after a day or so. just forget about it as the disorientation is largely psycho somatic.

What's the point of that? Your supposed to put olive oil in it for four days if you need to syringed.

what i was saying is not to bother wasting a doctors time and go straight to the nurse as that will be quicker.

I usually have my ears syringed about once every 2 years (I usually put olive oil in a few days before I go to the docs).

I did once go to the local emergency clinic on a Saturday morning - I was a singer at the time and had a gig that night and woke up with one very blocked ear. The nurse asked if I had used oil (I lied and said I had) and she syringed it there and then, no probs.

It is a nice sensation and a wonderful feeling afterwards. I would recommend using some form of ear protection though if you have a disco soon after as there will be no wax to protect your ear drum.

I have a club gig on Saturday night and I need to be able to have good hearing to mix. It's driving me insane lol.

Well I have had my ear syringed about 20 minutes or so ago and to be honest there is no difference yet. The nurse said it would take a while for my ear to dry out so hopefully she is right.
