Well guys, im now a firm believer that the whole playlist thing is starting to get out of hand. Ive just had 4 playlists returned to me over the weekend...one of them is for next saturday  and every single one of them has over 150 songs on. Take saturdays gig, im on 8pm-1am with a band toing 2x 45min slots. that leaves me with 3h 30m and theyve supplied me with over 7 and a half hours of music requests (and "would ideally like them all played" :bang: )

Im all for the odd page of requests coming im but im starting to feel like a flaming jukebox!

Rant over :)

Start by playing 30 seconds of each song? They'll soon change their minds :p

I had one not long ago where I had over 300 songs for a 3-4 hour disco, with 100+ from ONE guest alone :(

I kicked off the disco by thanking everyone for their requests and making a joke of the quantity, then promising to try to play one song off each person's list as a minimum. Did the trick :)

I did a civil partnership a couple of years ago and they gave me just under 24 hours worth of requests for a 5 hour function!

I offer playlist option but tell the customer I can only play approx 20 tracks per hr if they are 3min's long. I'm going slightly off playlist though....use to like them.

I don't take bookings if they want to insist on too many must plays - suggestions are fine and discussing things in more detail to get a clear idea of what they want, no problem at all, but not the whole nights worth as a list!

Just got this one through, but to be honest I could count on one hand the one's I don't think will work, so no objections, just a polite email to suggest I may not be able to fit them all in, but will do my best.

When I send out all the paper work , there is a page of requests ( and no no`s).
On the bottom of the page I gave them a rough guide of 20 songs per hour , so a 5 hour disco is 100 absolute max.
Most so far have settled for between 20 and 40

I accept a maximum of 30 (must play) song requests, pre-event. They can of course suggest more, but I'll only guarantee their 30 'must plays'. If they want a DJ who'll play to a strict list then I'm not the DJ for them.

If you havent already seen them the reason is the articles is snobby wedding magazines and online sites. They assume that all DJs are DJ Daves who know nothing about music and will wreck your day the first chance we get.
I have yet to see a wedding magazine with a good article from the DJ's standpoint.

I have also noticed a rise in these long request lists and so many of them fail in bad ways. All thanks to the bad advice offered.

To give you the gist of it. They say you should not pay a deposit for a DJ not pay him until the end of the night and only then if you are happy. And to set out what you want played all night.

Im sorry to say people are following this advice and thinking nothing of it.

I wonder how much actual experience these writers actually have with arranging DJ's and planning music for an evening. In most cases it would be slim to none at all. Sad.

Surely its really basics maths.

Average song length ...4 mins.Equates to 15 an hour.Average function duration 4 hours....60 TRACKS(at the most).

Why would the principles embarass themselves by asking for more!!

However we know they can't count....have you seen the waste at some of these buffets at our functions!!They must think all the guests are going to eat 6 sausage rolls,12 chicken legs and a large Strawberry cheesecake EACH!!

These teen paries are sold on the basis of being 'grown up' discos. No party games or interaction unless requested. Young trendy DJ (or me if he's not available :D ) with sound system, lasers and smoke, playing the latest chart music.

And it's cheaper than my 'normal' charges.

What annoys me most about the playlists is.when you are sharing with a band do they tell the band what 20 or so songs to play?

i dont think so

Most bands very rarley accept big playlists. They play what they think should be played and stick with it.

So why is it people think a dj would accept a big playlist?

Just been in the bath and had a Eureka moment. Why not adapt your form to only have 60 slots on it.Warn them if they go over that figure it incurs a £5.00 Surcharge per track.I think you might be getting some reduced playlists on that basis. If you don't do it that way mention it in your pre- event meeting!!Simples!!

Am I the only Jock on here to admit to not accepting playlists???

I'll take requests on the evening, and make sure I have the must plays, ie first dance, Mum-in-laws favourite, Hen Party night favourite etc.

But if they feel a list is needed, I try to explain what I do, and how my intention is a 'full floor for as much of the night as possible'. If that doesnt work, and they are insistent on me playing their list end to end, then sorry, 'you'll be better off, finding another DJ, I trust you have a great night regardless'

In tax year 2008/09 my disco work was 41.8% Kids & Teens, 47.8% Weddings & CPs, 3.4% Corporate, 6.8% Adult Other. Included in Kids & Teens are a couple of outdoor carnival type events. In turnover terms, Kids & Teens accounted for slightly under 28%. In cost terms, just over 20%, mostly through the reduced man hours compared to a wedding.

Why is it that I understand that it might work for you, but you can't see past the end of your nose when it comes to other people's working practises or marketing?

I do what works for me....so in that way it is better....for me.I have picked out the things I like from the new way....Laptops,music accesibility,LED lights,Lasers,Starcloths etc etc etc and coupled that with what I don't think was wrong with the older days(MOST would agree that the music was MUCH better then)... we also seemed to have so much more fun then...so I have incorporated that into what I do...and it seems to work!!

It's ironic, but because I offer set packages a few people have suggested that my service isn't particularly bespoke, when in reality I encourage at least 50 requests from my clients, so my service is probably more bespoke than many discos that DON'T offer packages!

I've never been one for xx number of must plays, xx number of play if possibles and xx number of other songs they like, because it's too complicated.

I also don't understand why a number of discos limit clients to a certain number of requests, as this isn't very good customer service in my book. People book a disco for the music, so why shouldn't they be able to choose what they like & as many songs as they like?

After all, when I go to a restaurant, they don't tell me what to order, and there's no maximum on the number of courses I can order.

My clients can request as many songs as they like. My request form has space for 50 songs, but they often email their lists, and these sometimes have between 50 and 100 songs, which is fine by me. It's the perfect situation, as I will tell them there won't be time to play all their requests, but that I'll get through as many of them as possible. I then cherry pick all the best songs from their list & don't play the ones which aren't as good, and I'll also accept requests on the night. Job done!

If people say they offer a bespoke service or that they tailor their service to their customer's requirements, they should accept as many requests as their clients want to give (and advise them if there are too many to play in the time available), but they should NOT be limiting the number of requests to 20, 30 or whatever.

Absolutely nothing, Darren.

I'm not saying what people should or shouldn't do. That's entirely up to them.

What I AM saying is that I think it's contradictory to tell clients that you offer a bespoke service or that you will tailor your service to their requirements...but then to tell them you will only allow 20 requests!

It's a bit like a garage saying "You can have this model in any colour you like...as long as it's black"

Actually, you didn't say that at all in your last post...

Why is it contradictory then?

I offer a tailored service - why do I have to offer unlimited requests?

Let me try & simplify what I'm trying to say.

If someone says they offer a bespoke service or that they they tailor their service to their customer's requirements, I think that means they do what their client wants.

Therefore, if their client wants to give them a list of 40 requests, they shouldn't turn round & say "You can't do that. We only allow 30 requests"

Does that clarify what I'm trying (and clearly failing!) to say?

I understand what you are saying but don't agree.

I offer a tailored service, but that doesn't mean every single thing.

They don't choose the mixer I use or the colour of socks I wear.

There are limits to every bespoke service I would have thought.

No, because they couldn't care less about either of those things. However, the music is a completely different matter.

There are limits to every bespoke service I would have thought.

There certainly are, but the reason someone books a disco is for the music, so I find it strange that a company should say they offer a bespoke service, but only allow the client to choose 20 requests.

In my book, if there's one part of our service that SHOULD be bespoke, it's accepting the clients requests, whether they want 5 or 55.

I have been taking requests by email for a number of my discos for a good few months now. I have been pondering about adding a request sheet to be sent out with my booking confirmations for me to get song requests sent back in the post as not everyone can get access to email. This way I will probably get request list for nearly all my disocs. I find it quite interesting some of the responses on here. My stance on this is that if you allowed for unlimited requests where does this leave you as a dj to actually use any skills in reading the dancefloor and playing similar songs to the requests. I would find it a bit boring just playing songs from a huge list of requests. The main buzz i get from a disco is knowing I have picked a song that hasn't been requested and I get a good reaction. If I just played a request list all night I may aswell turn up with the song list pre programmed and press shuffle!

When I add the request sheet I think I am likely to say that they can request as many songs as they like but also inform them that a maximum of 20 songs can be played per hour and that the dj will add similar type of songs/genre of music during the evening whilst accepting other requests from guests on the night. I think this should hopefully allow me as a dj to read the dancefloor whilst playing requests and keeping everyone happy :)

Exactly. I think it is quite sad that there are DJs who wouldn't have a clue without being given a list of songs to play. I think the requests should compliment the DJs choice and skill in choosing the correct styles and choice of song.

Indeed. However there's nothing wrong with long lists, as long as you make it clear that there is only time for x amount of songs in the time available & that you will be playing other stuff (requests on the night for one) & may well have to cherry pick the ones that you think are going to work the best.

This way I will probably get request list for nearly all my discos.

I think that's a good idea, which is why it's exactly what I do! All my clients receive a music request form with their booking confirmation. This has room for up to 50 songs.

About 75% of them return this form with their balance cheque several weeks before their function, and the rest simply email their request list, which I also have no problem with.

I find it quite interesting some of the responses on here. My stance on this is that if you allowed for unlimited requests where does this leave you as a dj to actually use any skills in reading the dancefloor and playing similar songs to the requests?

I'm not so much saying we should allow unlimited requests, but that we should NOT allow limited requests, such as 20 or 30. After all, there are only so many hours available at a function, so there's no point in encouraging more requests than we have time to play!

When I get very long lists, I inform the client that I won't have time to play them all, but that I'll get through as many as I can in the time available. I then cherry pick pick all the best ones & leave the rest, which works perfectly.

I would find it a bit boring just playing songs from a huge list of requests. The main buzz i get from a disco is knowing I have picked a song that hasn't been requested and I get a good reaction.

Fair enough.

For me, the main buzz I get is seeing a busy dance floor, and it doesn't matter whether the song I'm playing happens to be a request taken on the night, one requested in advance by the client or my own choice.

If I just played a request list all night I may aswell turn up with the song list pre programmed and press shuffle!

Does pressing shuffle make your playout system read the dance floor & play the right song at the right time, then?

When I add the request sheet I think I am likely to say that they can request as many songs as they like but also inform them that a maximum of 20 songs can be played per hour and that the dj will add similar type of songs/genre of music during the evening whilst accepting other requests from guests on the night. I send out a request sheet that has 25 rows on it and I note at the bottom that I will endeavour to play as many requests as I can within the duration of the function. I see it as a chance to see the style of music that the customer wants and then I use my experience to work with it. When I have a consultation with the customer I make it a bit humourous and say that I will have to speed up all of the songs to make sure that I get them all in and I would say that 99% of the time, the customer will say "Oh, don't worry, it's just a guide to show you what we like" and then they point out the songs that are 'Must Plays'. That works for me.

Just a another quick one but it goes back to the whole 'Human Jukebox' thing etc... My missus is registered on a wedding forum and she pointed out something to me the other day. There was a thread on the go about DJ's and I-pods. I took a look at the thread and it was interesting to say the least. It seems that the image of the Mobile Disco/DJ is still not that great with the majority that commented on the thread. Everyone that went on about the I-pod idea stated that at least they would be able to hear the music that they wanted without any 'Peter Kay' type rubbish over the top....(their words NOT mine!). However, those that did mention the Disco/DJ actually fought our corner and commented that "The DJ is a very important part of the whole day as it can be the perfect ending to a perfect day as long as you look around and get a good one".

Just thought I would mention it.

Yes, but they shouldn't expect you to read their mind to discover all the songs they like.

Because an ipod can't read the dance floor & play the right song at the right time.

For the record, I refuse rigid playlists (where they request all the songs for the function AND the order in which they're to be played).

This question goes out to everyone who accepts an unlimited playlist.

Although unlikely, what would you do if the client provided you with a list of 150 obscure "out of the norm" songs and you found out you didn't have most of them. Would you accept the £100+ loss it would cost you to purchase said tracks?

Just curious?

Vectis
26-01-2010, 03:52 PM
That's unlikely Shaun, but not impossible, for me, as we never get to the playlist without already having had a considerable amount of dialogue.

I did have one group last summer who wanted lots of Trojan reggae and early ska during the meal ( ) which meant sourcing lots of stuff I've never used since (:p ) but this was discovered at the pre-meeting and therefore quoted.

Even during the earliest conversations I ask what styles of music they're seeking which weeds out these types of scenarios.

OK , this MHO only , and may I state I have not been in this situation before.

I would imagine that the off beat song list would appeal to most of the party goers , therefore if there was 100 people there , I would think that this was more than a one off event , ( like people that still follow punk, goth, etc) therefore by playing the music they have requested , there could be a chance of a repeat booking , after all there are some DJ`s that specialize in a specific genre , so I would , and hope that something came of it.
However I might ask around for a DJ that did specialize in the type of music requested

In my market of weddings, I think this situation is virtually impossible.

In my experience, people tell you at the outset if they want music which is out of the norm, in which case I'd probably turn down the booking.

I'd be interested to know how many people have spent £100+ on the music for one booking, regardless of whether or not they passed the cost onto the client.

The person who said he charges for requests also said that he only allows 30, so even if he had none of them 9which is extremely unlikely), it would only cost him about £23, rather than the £100+ you talk about.

Nope - in a previous thread I said I don't take large playlists and turn down work where I am on a fixed list.

I had a similar situation, with a boat load of Il Divo and Kathryn Jenkins.

I encourage requests, but on the Music Request Form that goes out with my information pack it states around 15-20. I normally have to buy a couple of tracks for pretty much every list, as well as keeping up with the chart.

I'm not sure about the whole 'charging the customer for tracks' thing but I can see why some people may do it as at the end of the day, it's business.

I have to admit that most of the time there are probably one or two tracks that I may not have BUT I SHOULD HAVE so I download them. The customer is almost doing me a favour by jogging my memory and reminding me that the song(s) they have requested should be in my collection. I have a wedding in July that is for an ex punk. He is part of a scooter group now and has booked me because he thinks/knows I will be up to the job. He started listing lots of tracks over the phone and I knew every single one of them. DJs reckon that if the entertainer can't get the crowd going, then they risk losing further clients who are in attendance as guests.

Im listening to plan be now and its a mix of indie and rap (oldies would love that :D ).
I might try that one at my next masonic gig LOL

I think there is a place for almost every genre at any venue. Just a case of the right track i reckon?

I meet with all my clients and discuss their preference including must plays and definite no-no's.
What's interesting though the clients who say "no cheese" are the ones going mad for it on the day after asking for greese or something

Goes to show they are not used to events or what music works and is acceptable to play.

I see it as an advantage for the client as well. Whenever I've been handed 4 pages of A4, all "must play" tracks, it's been really difficult to create a smooth performance out of them. Consequently, there has been a fair amount of jumping around between genres, BPM's etc, leaving me with a disjointed performance and the crowd up and down like a brides nightie!

By having a fewer number of requests, it allows me to play the songs that have been requested, at the right time, and build a show around them.

Goes to show they are not used to events or what music works and is acceptable to play.

:D

Then they are better off leaving it with us then.

You wouldn't employ a plumber to fit a new bath and then tell him how to do it....Would you??

Anyway request threads are getting boring!!

Can we have a money thread for a change??

I'm really struggling to understand why so many people have a limit on the number of requests they accept, especially when that number is as low as 20.

I can see it's an advantage for the DJ, as it means less preparation time & potentially less tracks to buy...but what about the client?

A number of DJs clearly limit requests to a dozen or two, but I've not seen this mentioned on any disco websites, and I can guess why...it's hardly a good selling point!

Is anyone else getting a strong feeling of deja-vu?

No, you'd just tell him what type/size/colour of bath you wanted, choose the taps to go with it and tell him where and when you wanted it fitted.

I doubt many clients/guests try to tell you how to insert a CD, or how to take a record out of it's sleeve and cue it up.

If you don't agree with it or do it yourself, then why keep banging on about it Rob? We've heard your opinion and all understand what you think.

I don't keep banging on about it, Darren.

In fact two of the three points in my post which you quoted were things I've NOT said before!

With 4 pages worth of requests, surely it's not THAT hard to sort them out into some kind of order where you're NOT jumping around all over the place so your performance is NOT disjointed?

I encourage a playlist fro, all my customers - if only to get a feel for the musical direction they prefer. When listing specific must must plays I 'suggest' between 20 -30 or so tracks and then have a seperate section for musical genres - It then doesn't take rocket science from their specific requests as to the general direction you're going to go in.

If they go mad on the specific requests, so be it, I don't lambast them, just say 'great song selection ;) ', then point out the time factor and I'll be hoping to get through what I can - They're normally having too good a time (or ahem socially relaxed) to notice if you haven't played a particular track - I can't recall ever having someone come back at be for not playing something on a playlist, I mean let's face it can they remember everything they've requested off the top of their head (especially if it's been a long list).

A lot of it is about common sense on our part methinks.

My 'must play' list is similar to Darrens for this Saturday - so happy days, easy night & easy life for me.

Leona Lewis - Out Of My Head & Happy
BEP - Meet Me Half Way & I Gotta Feeling
NDubz - Playing With Fire & I Don't Want To Go To Sleep
Justin Bieber - One Time & One Less Lonley Girl
Alexandra Burke - bad Boys & Broken Heels
Cheryl Cole - 3 Words & Fight For This Love
Chipmunk - Look for Me & Oops a daisy
Gagagagagaga - Just Dance & Bad Romance (strangely no Poker face as a specific)
Sugababes - Get Sexy - About A Girl
Jay Sean - Down
Iyaz - Replay
Owl City - Fireflies Have you seen the cover for this single - they HAVE to be Sheffield Wednesday Fans lol
3Oh!3 - Starstrukk
Kei$ha - Tik Tok
Timbaland - Morning After Dark
D Money - Russian Roulette
Guetta - Sexy Chick
Saturdays - Up
JLS - Everybody In Love, Beat Again & One Shot

Well, on the two or three occasions it's happened to me, there have been around 120 requests. So yes, it is much more difficult than playing a smaller number of requests and creating a performance around it.

More importantly, I don't think I ever have, or ever will, lose a booking on the basis that I want to use my judgement and experience to create a unique and memorable event rather than just hit play on some gargantuan playlist.

Well I'll be backing out soon as well, cos I can't believe some of the things that are being posted!!  I don't think anyone is unaware of my views and policy, or would benefit from me reiterating them.

I might dispute that.

Do you really think that a 12 year old wanting a 'cool' DJ and disco would be wanting then to play YMCA and agadoo? Come on Max

would that be you then :D :p :p :p

JLS - Everybody In Love, Beat Again & One Shot

not a bad shout, sounded great when Alex Burke sang it though.

I might dispute that.

In fairness, it's indisputable. I know that I've never lost a booking for this reason because it's never come up as an issue during the booking process. On two occasions, when the music request form has been returned with a load extra (and I am talking a load more, not just a few), I've contacted the client and told them that I'll do my best to play as many as I can, but the list is a little extensive. No-one has ever cancelled because of this.

Of course, your experience may differ.

The customer will get the same wherever they go, so why cancel ;)

Care to clarify that one a bit Max?

If they went to another DJ, the playlist issue would not be resolved, as fitting 24 hours of music into a 5 hour function is not possible, so I doubt a cancellation would be made.

Fair enough, and the reason I didn't go with a cast iron rebuttal is as you have pointed out that providing you are able to explain the situation to them, and be flexible in your approach, then it would not be a problem.

The problems lie in a blanket refusal to accomodate longer lists, or deal sensibly with the customer. As you point out, a pleasant and polite chat with the customer can often be the best and simplest way of educating them to certain facts. ( such as not being able to play three days worth of requests in a three hour gig! :D :D )

Actually Max, as far as dancing goes it's a :Censored: terrible shout, but keeping in context with the thread, ultimately it is my shout, and if I feel it fits I'll use the dance remix and not the standard radio edit.

...You charge clients extra if they want to give you some requests?

:jawdrop:

Yep. But it's not "some" requests. It's lots of requests. "some" requests are included in the basic price. Remember, these are pre-arranged guaranteed-to-be-played tracks and usually mean a lot to the person requesting them. If I haven't got them in my library (it does happen!) then I have to source them. I find clients are happy to pay a few quid extra to ensure they have their special songs played rather than taking a chance and requesting songs that I might not have with me on the night.

Indeed...but I think Dazzy is being SERIOUS!

I am being serious. It's called business and I'm in the business of giving the client exactly what he or she (usually she!) wants. But, at the same time, I'm not in the business of tracking down oscure tracks at a financial loss to myself.

...You want Indie listen to it on your headphones at home...because the chances are your older guests are not going to be in the least bit :Censored: interested.(hastens to add...with the odd few exceptions).

If any of the (rather substantially large) group of potential clients that you've just alienated gets in touch with you then feel free to pass them on to me (or any one of the number of folk on here who believing in giving the client what they want).

Communication is something a lot of service providers don't know how to do (and not just in our industry). Makes me wonder how they ever get on in business! :(

It might be worth mentioning that you will accept most requests as long as you have them, and then limiting the amount of requests that need to be sourced to say 10, then they pay an extra fee for any more.

Most Discos I have been to tend to play average 'run of the mill' pop/dance/party music.
