Buy some second hand RW3's About £200 for a decent pair.
Stanton CD501 is not a bad unit - £200
Lighting is a real mine field depending on what you want, but NJD do good little units and you should get Chaos 2's at £80 a pop (4 of them would do a job for a bit and look balanced)

I assume you have amp and desk.

I would firstly say, Don't buy one of those Pukka Party pack deal thingies, Yes they may look good value, but look at the grade of the equipment - Is it really something that will last for years :(

The main priority in my opinion is the sound system, you can have loads of lights spinning around the place, but poor quality sound gives out a bad impression of the company.

I would probably put £500 towards the sound system, pair of impossibleds (260 a pair), and a pair of LED Bars, which will just touch a grand.

That then leaves £200 for playback, and stands etc.

It's a tough one

Are those numbers just for the flightcases to put it in, Maxwell?
If not, that budget will only get you the most basic of budget systems.

I can recommend the Chauvet Swarm lights - very nice effects and you can get a good price from one of the MDD's supporters.

If you search the forums there are loads of threads similar to yours. You may find your anwser there.

Basic CD / Mixer / Case package here (http://www.decks.co.uk/package/Gemini_CDX2400_Numark_C1_37303) (£300)

It would be easier to offer advice if you were a bit more specific about what you need.

For example - a powerfull sound system for big venues or a middle of the road one? Do you need an amp? Do you have a preference for passive or active speakers? etc.

Thanks for your comments.

I'm looking at purchasing KAM VORTEX 15" as they seem perfect unless anyone has had bad results with these?

Also, ive been looking at the gemini cdm 3600 any thought on these?

Thanks all

I think you probably need to start this thread again stating what you already have and what are you looking at trying to achieve? Ie what work are you looking to do with it.

In response to the equipment listed above.

I have no experience of the KAM speakers, but would not be a choice I would make. I have had KAM equipment on my rig when I started up again and its not the most reliable and is all now off my rig.

The Gemini is something for playing around with at home or as an emergency fill in system. I certainly wouldn't recommend it as full time on a gigging rig.

I just have a hunch Darren is starting again after a break. If you are Darren....draw breath..and slow down. There have been a lot of changes in the past few years!!

If you already have some gigs use the network of DJ's in your area to help cover them...to get set up and flowing smoothly nowadays can take months!!

Hi Darren

One retailer offering these Kams states their maximum spl is (a very low) 103dB, but more concerning is that on Kam's own website they have omitted to quote their maximum output altogether! ...which tells me they're probably too ashamed to publish it, therefore I recommend you avoid these cabs altogether.

If you want a really good value and nice sounding entry level cab, look at the JBL JRX115. Well worth saving a little more for these boxes.

Hope this helps

Tony

Err, with respect Tony, I could do a sound system for £500 which would run sizeable gigs easily, and allow upgrading ( subs) at an appropriate time. ( Regular readers will know where from ;) ;) :D :D )

I can't get near playout and stands for £200 however, unless it's a Giraffe and S/H CD players. Ultimax and Cortex would be £400.

Agreed. Narrow the search, and we'll get there.
PS. Budget Speakers: Have I mentioned I know of a company who make good value ones, in the Midlands? ;) :D :D

Yes, look for something else, they're little more than toys, and a waste of money. The Numark CDMix range are a LOT better, especially the latest ones.

Combined units are a bad idea in any shape or form as a single fault leaves you without a paddle. Separate playout and desk is what you want as gives you options if you lose a fader, etc. Also with separates you can identify the problem easier to bypass it.

Dont do it ................. :D

Seriously though, if you can then go for the best possible system that streching the budget will allow. I, and many others on here, wasted hundreds (if not thousands for some) on budget gear, just getting a tad better each time.

personally if i look back at what ive spent, i could have got the system ive now got a few years earlier and have a fair amount of money left in the kitty.

If budget is tight, seriously take Tony (A1DL) advice...the guy knows his onions from his pickles :)

It is possible to buy a more than adequate system without spending mega bucks. The trick is knowing which budget items are good value and reliable, rather than cheap and nasty. :( :(

Tony is indeed The Oracle when it comes to quality sound, but even he has gaps in his knowledge. Just as I've never heard any of the multi thousand pound rigs which appear to be de rigeur on his contracts, neither has he had the privelege of admiring my varied collection of East Midlands cabs.

We know one member on here who changed a Mackie active rig for a budget one costing a quarter of the new price, and has had no regrets whatsoever. However, we've had loads of folk new to the game who have bought a Legendary Prosound rig, and regretted every second of it.

Yes I agree, the sound system itself should be the main area of investment as this is if you like "the bread winner" of the business.

I've taken a look at the JBL speakers...nice set of speakers, thanks the recommendation Tony. Basically, I am starting back up again from a 2 year break and want to get it right first time. I used to have a pair of mackie srm450's which were brilliant.

Miss my old equipment, wish I had never sold it now...:bang: but you learn by your mistakes :)

Ok so thats the speakers sorted, now for a Dual cd player...

I used to own citronic, seperated dial controller with the twin cd decks mounted into a wooden case.

I've not heard the JBL's, so I'm at a disadvantage here, but I know a set of cabs costing over £100 less than them that I'd put up against JBL or particularly Mackie any day.

What are they then?

All opinions welcome, all im after are a set of speakers that would easily cover a venue of around 100 -300 guests.

Thanks

I have three of the things knocking around. An old 1st generation Numark CDN22 (the new generation wouldn't lace its boots on reliability), A stanton CD501 and a Denon DN4000.

The Denon rules my world, The stanton is okay for the price and as mentioned above the entry level Numarks are not what they used to be, but the mid range models seem okay.

I bought a KAM, which managed 1 track before it died. What a heap of steaming garbage they are. I am not a Citronic fan either.

Make sure you have antishock on whatever you buy. Thats why my old CDN 22 is retired.

Why not just get some decent kit on finance. Denon is they way forward. Your interest payments are tax deductable.

The 88 is a decent piece of kit, but what are you looking to do. Do you need beatmatch, effects and all the nonesense or are you a wedding and party DJ. If you are the latter you want bomb proof reliability and a unit that is easy to use.

I would suggest that for a few more pennies you can have a Denon 4500, which is a great unit and will pair with a denon HD unit if you go digital in the future (other digital devices exist and thats a different debate before the thread gets hijacked).

You will buy one Denon - You will buy many others if you go down an alternative route.

Have you got a mixer and amp??????

No no mixer or amp at the moment I'm getting together some info on products ready to purchase in 2 weeks time...excited...very lol.

Silly question, ive seen the Denon 4500 for around £400 new but only shows a picture of the controller unit, are the cd decks seperate?

Are you looking at the HDC 4500, which is a midiplayer?

I picked up my Denon DND4000 CD Player and DNX900 mixer off ebay for £500. Its a good route if you know enough about kit to be sure you are not getting a bum deal.

So basically you have no rig at all at present and its a from scratch job.

Yep thats the boy. You should get at least five years hard gigging out of that if not more. Cheaper models will last 18 months or so.

If you have no amp then thats the bit not to scrimp on. Its your engine so make sure it is suited to whatever cabs you go for and for gods sake don't by a cheap one as they are never going to sound nice and will let you down.

Errr, I'd suggest:
and for gods sake don't by a cheap one without asking on here as they are never going to sound nice and will let you down if you get the wrong one

The Thomann/ C Mark for example are not expensive, but are highly regarded by quite a few on here. The older Behringers are similarly bracketed.

Wow...it's been a short while since I first posted this thread...

Just thought I'd mention that I now have bought some kit...all new of course...

I now own the DENON DN D4500 with a CITRONIC CDM 8 mixer :)

I also have purchased, which I'm sure some of you may disagree but I do like the mackies as the sound quality I believe is superb...but anyway back to the topic at hand, I own a pair of Mackie SRM 450 v2 speakers :beer1:

Getting there now...thanks for all your advice, my research and lots n lots of googling has been exhausting but worth the effort.

Darren :)
