I have a DJ who does the teen parties for me and I had one booked for 30th January which he couldn't do, so rather than get one of the others to cover it, I thought I'd go 'back to the floor' so to speak and do it myself.

I only really do these kind of things at the kids schools, but thought it might make a change to see what kids are dancing to these days.

I took my 12 year old daughter who has been pestering me to let her help for a while now and she was pretty good at lifting gear about! I thought she could also act as cultural advisor in case I didn't know what the kids were on about!!!

I had a large request list which I didn't mind one bit as they would be getting exactly what they wanted. Most of it was from the current chart with one or two others thrown in.

I took a smallish show with 2 x EFX500s, Nebula laser and the new Kam FScan40 which was absolutely brilliant with a little haze.

And the party?

There was around 50 kids with the oldest being 12-13 and quite a few younger. There was a piano in the corner that they kept opening up and 'playing' (I mean that in the loosest sense of the word) Next there was glo stick wars with boys and girls lobbing them at each other for about an hour.

This was coupled with boys running round like complete idiots and fighting. They then found a lot of paper and put it all over the floor so that they could skid around on it. There was also a bar counter next to me which they were standing on and hanging from the rafters on the roof before dropping off.

The Mum appeared at one point to ask if I could tell them not to take the drink from the fridge as these hadn't been paid for.

They did dance for most of the night on and off (mainly the girls) and I did find it strange that they knew all of the words to just about every song I played, but that's me showing my age as I was the same when I was around 12-13. :o

They didn't want any interactive type dances or too much mic work, so I just made the odd announcement, got them to sing happy birthday and told them to stop swinging on the rafters and nicking the drinks!

Did I enjoy it?

Funnily enough, I did!

Not something I'd do every week, but I was surprised at the reaction of some of the girls when particular songs came on. I enjoyed just playing chart music for a change, finishing at 10pm and being home by 11pm, beer in hand by 11:15pm. :beer1:

Darren I know exactly how you feel, it is only really in January & February that I get to go and do things like 16ths and 18ths etc and I really enjoy them also.

Your FScan40 has a rating of 15K pps which is good considering the price range your lasers in. The higher the pps rating, the smoother the laser shows/patterns move. You may hear people talking about the laser beams being flickery, this is down to the pps rating being low. I'd say anything above 10K pps is good, anything lower I wouldn't personally recommend.

Mr Mayhem wouldn't have been doing the gig as it wasn't a kids party and that is what he specialises in.

I did quite a lot of these parties last year and they all follow the format detailed in the OT. (ok, there is not always a piano)

The request lists consist of everything from the last 3 months only, but I normally chuck in DJ Casper, Crazy Frog, Cotton Eye Joe, Barbie Girl, Witch Doctor plus Flo Rida low, PCD - Don't Cha

They are so predictable that much of it can be premixed (shocker!), but it enables me to keep my eye on what they are doing ... plus I can press the strobe button at the appropriate moment.

I do 2.5 hours and only on a Friday leaving Saturday free for proper gigs and better money.

.... and Mayhem definately wouldnt touch it. I've seen what he does with the little uns and he is brilliant though!

Got to say....think we could have made a better job of that...cause we have all the chart stuff as well.My Partner is fantastic on a one-to-one basis with Kids of all ages as well.

It is the hardest age to do though I will grant you that.Its only like the Adult stuff....you need something to engage with.You'd beat me into ten cocked hats with your Corporate Parties ...but could give you a run for your money on this type of thing....don't get angry....because I know its not your comfort zone. :beer1: :beer1: :beer1: :beer1:

Sounds to me like they were bored.We don't have wrestling or Glo-stick fights at ours or kids dangerously swinging from the rafters....Jackie (my partner) would have had a Dippy-Fit....(Health and Safety Issue??).

Not taking sides in any way, but I used to do a Junior School, and I would regularly get requests for the latest hip and happening tracks. ( Hey, I've got all the latest lingo. ;) ;) ) As per normal, I'd play as many as I could, and they'd bomb. Tumbleweed. :Tumble: The headmaster would come up, and strongly suggest I revert to the Tried and Trusted songbook, as he reckoned they were simply trying to be cool in front of their mates. Play the Usual Suspects, and what happens? :confused: Packed dancefloor. Hey ho.

If someone offered me 50 12/13 year olds for three/four hours with no interaction I wouldn't have fancied it.I would of course have run it past Jackie first...but pretty sure she would have agreed.

It's just occured t me that I do just that at least twice a year, at one of our regular gigs for ISL (I also do their staff Xmas party & their graduation ball)

I'd have rung the organizer and listened to what she wanted and said....

"Look Mrs.........I really don't think this will work......kids get bored easily....we'll have them dropping off the rafters,wrestling and Glo-Stick fights".;)

If she still insisted... in your position I would have gone through this thought process.

Then farmed it out to another DJ in the area I don't like.:devil:

When will you listen?

We do lots of these teen parties and they love what we provide. I am not going to tell the client what they want and I am not going to turn it down because of the 'hassle'. There wasn't any for me.

The birthday boy really enjoyed it, the parents were impressed and I even got an enquiry for a 40th birthday out of it surprisingly.

Wouldn't do that sort of game with this age group.

I actually asked the birthday boy if I should play that and I did. I had about 3 or 4 dancers.

I'm not getting involved and this is simply a observation from previous experience.
When I do school disco's, the kids ALWAYS ask for "Top 40, RnB etc" and when you mention S Club 7, Queen, Steps (5,6,7,8), YMCA they turn their nose up and frown - yet when you play it at the event they go crackers!

I NEVER play games with 12/13 year olds because I know they would be horrified. Last November, I did 5 birthdays and they were all for 13 years old. (all from recommendation so it was the same crowd of people) I occasionally spoke on the mic encouraging them to scream, cheer, hands in the air..but that's as far as it went!

At 13 years old I certainly wouldn't want to be playing games at my birthday party!? I remember I had a disco which started at 7.30pm-9.30pm and we all enjoyed the "late finish" and felt rather grown up.

I've already said it sounds like you did a fine job.I hinted that I would have done a diferent job.In retrospect wether it would have been better or not is imponderable....as we'll never get that moment again...so I apologise.

I'm not getting involved and this is simply a observation from previous experience.
When I do school disco's, the kids ALWAYS ask for "Top 40, RnB etc" and when you mention S Club 7, Queen, Steps (5,6,7,8), YMCA they turn their nose up and frown - yet when you play it at the event they go crackers!

I NEVER play games with 12/13 year olds because I know they would be horrified. Last November, I did 5 birthdays and they were all for 13 years old. (all from recommendation so it was the same crowd of people) I occasionally spoke on the mic encouraging them to scream, cheer, hands in the air..but that's as far as it went!

At 13 years old I certainly wouldn't want to be playing games at my birthday party!? I remember I had a disco which started at 7.30pm-9.30pm and we all enjoyed the "late finish" and felt rather grown up.
