Is anybody out there using a sub £500 rgb laser yet? If so how do you find them?

I personally think RGB laser projectors are way over-priced and strongly believe that RGV projectors cost considerably less. I've never seen an RGB laser projector for around £500 brand new.

If I was looking at getting a 500mW RGB, I'd be looking around the £1,200 mark whereas a 500mW RGV would cost around the £500-£600 mark.

Violet, @ 405nm, has only become widely available thanks to the dawn of cheap Blu Ray media and HD-DVD optical drives. This is why we are seeing a surge of cheap Chinese-built RGV imports - or those posing as RGB units - flooding the market, as there is now an abundance of readily available and inexpensive violet diodes in the marketplace. @ 405nw, borderline UV, is virtually invisible at lower mW ratings, and only serve to add some colour depth to RGB lasers intended for graphic projection. They are next to useless for any impressive beam effects.

I did hear a story not so long ago that a large batch of optical drives come out of a factory in Guangdong or somewhere, completely unsuitable for resale. This huge faulty lot was auctioned off to the highest bidder at a rock bottom price - or even disposed of completely and salvaged 'off the record' - who then began the process of dismantling the units and selling off the remaining working components. Those unreliable violet diodes then began working their way into RGV lasers intended for Western export. I don't know how much truth there is in that, but price gap between seems to suggest that this might be the case.

A true blue DPSS diode, @ 473nw, is one of the most expensive £ - mW wise. I'd be interested to know what determines that...

One of the first results for a 'RGB laser' on eBay was £349.99. I'd reserve judgment until I saw it in the flesh though, and without a waterscreen. DMX / ILDA controlled, 300mW.
