2 Weddings cancelled in one day!!

What a weird monday this is turning out to be!

Had a call earlier today from a customer (Wedding in September at my new hotel residency), who advised me that due to financial circumstances, the venue would be changing as they could not afford the hotel....Ok, fair enough. Around an hour ago she calls me again and says that unfortunately they have decided to cancel the whole thing and wait until next year.
Booking fee paid months ago and it's a date that I know will get filled - Oh well.

Around 5 minutes ago, I get an email from another customer (Wedding in July) who simply said "It is with regret that due to personal circumstances, we will not be able to go ahead with our wedding in July and therefore we will no longer require your services so we will have to cancel our booking with you. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused."
Booking fee paid months ago and again, it's a popular date that I know will get filled.

All was looking very good. I had 31 weddings booked and now I am back to 29 but I have a wedding fayre coming up next weekend so they may get filled. The second cancellation above is a tad disappointing as they were paying good money for uplighting aswell.

I did email both of them back to confirm the cancellations and also wished them all the best but I didn't really know what else to say as I don't know their situations and to be honest, it's none of my business is it.

Sorry to hear of your cancellations, Gary.

I've just had a cancellation call five minutes ago for the 27th of this month. Normally it'd be full balance owed in full, but It's a repeat customer and I've not had any other enquiries for that date. I still have the booking fee to soften the blow.

True, but that's probably the reason they'd have the most trouble telling you about.

I'm sure if it was anything else, they'd be more than likely to just tell you.

Ive had 2 cancellations both for this week.

I don't follow your logic. Why would they care if a stranger knew they'd split up? They'll have to tell their friends & family, what difference does one stranger make?

I can only speak for myself, Steve...but if I had a disco booked for my wedding, and then split up with my fiancee, I'd probably be too embarrassed to give the reason to the disco company when contacting them to cancel.

I'd just send an email similar to the one Gary received, which didn't give any reason, genuine or otherwise.

TBH, although it could be a split, my initial reaction would be something to do with the health of someone (which, I think, is very difficult to put in words to a stranger).

Doesnt matter whether they've split or not does it- given that you are pretty sure you will fill the dates this might be classed as a "good" day.

At the end of the day, Gary will probably still end up working on those nights, so by my reckoning he's up by the total of two booking fees!

Seems to be a lot of splits happening recently.

Then again, maybe my own split at the end of last year has just heightened my awareness of it happening to others. But all I seem to be hearing lately is of people's relationships breaking down.

Gary, I can understand how you feel not knowing what to say in your reply. People seem to have been walking on eggshells around me even though my train of thought is "Oh, well. These things happen!" ;)

I had one yesterday as well, got a call from a friend to say the wedding was off. Contaced the girl who had booked me direct just in case it was an Ex causing trouble as happened to me last year. As the deposit had only been paid to me last week I returned it to her today.

I lost one last week as well, booked for 17th Dec in a local Castle, retainer fee paid, now decided to get married in Scotland in 6 weeks time, with minimum fuss!
Put the phone down, and within the hour took a Christmas Party booking for the same date!
