View Full Version : Stupid Requests from Customers
I know there have been a few of these, and whilst there are customers and beer there will continue to be ....
For probably 50% of my gigs i am in my local social club where everyone knows me and i have a few beers :beer1: :beer1: etc when I DJ and we all get on and have a laugh. It just works .... but this year I have been doing more gigs outside of there which involves driving and therefore not drinking. I think i must notice the stupid requests more
These from saturday ...
Lady: I want a song played
Me : No problem
Lady: I don't know who it is by or what it is called
Me : <smiling> you're not really helping here are you
Lady: I know. I'll go away and think about it
... and this one whilst playing The Clash - I fought the law
Fella: Can you play some Clash mate
Me: What the heck do you think this ? <points at screen>
Fella: Oh yeah, I thought I liked it. Nice one mate.
...I'm still giggling now so I thought i would share.

Yeah, I've had "You know what would be good after this?"
"What?"
"Some Monkees"
I was playing Last train to Clarksville at the time

This does make me laugh.
If someone likes a song enough to ask for it at a disco, you'd think they'd like it enough to know what it's called & who it's by!

Waits for the Nuclear Fallout like I had when I said I occasionally have a sherbert when i'm working.;) ;)
My favourite stupid comment was....
"Have you got that song with Hello in the middle???"
Eh!

You'd think so Rob, it doesn't help when they try & sing it to you.
The amount of times I've had to resist the urge to say something along the lines of "Sorry, but even if I did know the song you want, I don't think I'd recognise it from that tuneless caterwauling"
paull

Yep, had a singer of "name that tune" on Sunday, unsurprisingly I was not able to help.

"Can you play Revolution?"
" D'you mean The Beatles song"
"Yeah Mate!"
"Okay will do"
15 minutes later, after playing the song
"Are you going to play Revolution?"
"I did before this one"
"Oh that wasn't the one I wanted"
"Well that was Revolution by The Beatles"
"Perhaps its not them then!, will you play the other one?"
"What else do you know about the song?
"Its got some organ in it!"
"Sorry mate no idea!"
Little later...
"My mate thinks its Amen Corner - Paradise"
"That doesn't mention Revolution!"
Listens in headphone to Amen Corner
"Nah that's not it"
Me, with flash of inspiration
"Could it be Thunderclap Newman - Something in the Air?
"Never heard of that one mate!"
"Have a listen"
"Yeah, that's the one! I love this song, probably my all time favourite!"
But you don't know what its called, who its by, or recognise the title when quoted to you, you moron!!

Like I said, I work there regularly, know the crowd etc and it is a members club so (on the whole) the trouble stays outside. It's a few minutes walk home. They give me more bookings than I can handle, so i must be doing something right ;-)

Lionel Richie :D or more probably Gary Glitter - Hello I'm back again (not in my show you're not Gary....)

Wrong end of stick mate...A lot of the forum members think you shouldn't drink alcohol at all when you're working!!
Negates your PLI....creates wrong image....drunk in charge of 5000 volts etc etc!!
Songs with "Hello" in the middle....could give you a thousand!!!

drunk in charge of 5000 volts etc etc!!
It's not really advisable to plug your disco equipment into anything higher than 230 /240 volts regardless of whether you've had a beer or not

I take your point on PLI actually ... worth thinking about.
just to get it into context, we are talking a few beers here, not bladdered, falling over or slurring on the mic. My responsiblity is to give my customers a good time right till the end of the night. I do and that is why I get a lot of repeat bookings. When I am finished, then i may stay and have a beer (or 3) with the staff once i am finished.
My original intention was to illustrate that the comments seem all the more stupid when you are stone cold sober ....
... anyhow .. back on topic :D :D

These are the same people who you see on X-factor et al who make a gawd awful noise but are genuinely convinced that they can sing well and get very annoyed when Mr Cowell tells them to :Censored:off........

I've been asked for YMCA ... whilst it was playing
I regularly seem to get the "I want a song but I don't know what it's called or who sings it" queries :bang:
I've a napkin somewhere (kept for posterity :) ) with "Play some Adam Ant or we'll kneecap you" written in lipstick from about 1984

:p Lol
Stupid requests are part and parcel of what we do, and I can tolerate it to a certain extent.
HOWEVER!! One thing that really gets up my nose is when some drunkard comes up and asks (example)
"play 'sex on fire'"
OK no probs.
I play it .....they dance.....
Then said Drunkard comes up and asks for the same agian....
OK no probs.....just give it time.......Even if I begin to feel a little amatuer...
Then :Censored: me he staggers up (well trips up stage) and asks for 'sex on fire' AGAIN!!
At that point I tell him I have a back log of requests now and don't think I can play it as closing time is near......
"ahhhh come on....ya a good DJ put it on again.....they'll love it"
I reply, "ok mate I'll squeeze it in, just let me anounce last orders" at that point he heads for the bar....lol....works nearly every time:beer1: ::p :D

I had one from a young kid at a children's party asking for "comedian", I told him I didn't know what he meant so he sang it to me.........
I'm a, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a, I'm a Comedian (to the tune of Karma Chameleon).
I laughed and I laughed....hehe.:p

Maybe some of our more musical members should write & record a song called Something decent. Then we could distribute it to every DJ in the land for just that eventuality. You never know it might shut them up (or at least make them think about what they wanted before coming & interrupting you while you're trying to work :sj:)

Wouldn't it be ironic if we could get someone like Jedward to perform the song? Then "Something Decent" probably wouldn't be decent at all and that should shut punters up in the future!

We'd also need versions called "Anything decent", "Anything good", "Anything better than this:Censored:"
How many times have you been tempted to say "Sorry, I can't play anything decent/good as *the host* has asked me to play crap all night"?
Or "No, I don't have any decent music, if I had I would have played it by now":bang:

The most stupid question sometimes comes before you've even started the disco.
You've arrived (on your own), and are carrying in & setting up the gear, and someone asks "Are you the DJ?"
