For the last 4 weeks ive lost bookings regularly.

Ive had missed calls/voicemails on Friday and/or Saturday night for people looking to book, or for quotes. Each time ive returned their calls, always the next day....theyve already booked.

Do people not realise that they cant get hold of you for a readon, and wonder why the guy the have booked was sat in...or worse, taking calls whilst gigging. ---- PS, im not saying that because you have a night off your c:Censored: p :D, but if they take the time to ring around, surely it would be common sense to allow people time to get back in touch.

Really?

The last thing we did when getting wed or organising a familly do was run around ticking things off a list with the first supplier that answered the phone.

But then again - I am not stupid :D

In response to OP. If they are stupid people do you really want to work for them anyway?

Maybe they have people answering phones 7 days a week who are not DJs but support staff-I have a suspicion at least one person on here offers that--no doubt we will hear on that;)

If someone answers the phone ( whenever ) its an organisation that is full time and Professional.

If you then get into a professional conversation with someone who sounds if they really know what they are talking about and get quoted what appears to be a reasonable quote, even a tad high and a credible story then a lot of people WILL BUY.

Thats how it is.

It happens here all the time( but not on a Saturday night--no one rings)

i hate it when people ring on friday and Saturday nights.

I have it on my website not to call then and generally i do not get many at all unless from Yellow pages.
I actually specify that i would rather be emailed and about 90% if not more enquiries are emails.

All my marketing materials diverts people to the website.

Seems to work.

I can't imagine any company that has full-time office staff would have it's offices open on a Friday and Saturday night.

I no longer worry about it, if people call after 6.30pm they get the option to be put through to an out of hours number (for emergencies), or leave a message.

I don't even know they've tried to call and thats the way I prefer it, as you can easily spend your whole life chasing work and not have any time for yourself. That said, I'm around all day to take calls, so obviously it's different if you have a day job.

I can see where your coming from Steve, that is the reason I have all my numbers diverted to my mobile as I spend very little time in the house. If I am at a gig alone then I leave my mobile at home and take my sons or wifes instead and she can answer.

I have to agree that a lot of people, big spenders and cheaper, spend a few minute phoning around then book someone straight away.

Well I could be wrong but I thought one provider used to advertise that--however I checked and that message is not on the site anymore

Enquirers will ring at all times, often without thinking, so some of these calls WILL call on Saturday nights.

The trouble is that for those who receive most of their enquiries by phone, if they can't answer the call they will often lose the booking, sometimes because people will carry on ringing other discos & may have booked one by the time you call back, and sometimes because many people hate voicemails/answerphones, so won't even leave a message in the first place.

I guess that's one advantage of receiving nearly all your enquiries by email rather than by phone.

Looking at my January enquiries only 10% were by telephone, the vast majority by e-mail. Funnily enough most of the telephone ones were tyre kickers.

I used to use these guys (http://www.wightanswer.co.uk/) when I was away from home a lot before I went full-time.

Give them a script, pay them a monthly fee, and let them do the converting for you :) Must be thousands of companies like it.

Yes: there's more and more companies in all industries using 'out of hours' answering services.

Funnily enough, in my experience, it's the companies offering the 'cheaper' end of particular industries where it appears to be catching on the most. (Not suggesting you're at the cheaper end of the market Vectis.... just an observation from other industries I've come across)

Another thing, the typical "office lady" probably wouldn't know the technical side of things, so wouldn't be able to answer any non-admin related questions, but at least a quote can be provided etc.

I am talking about employed secreteries who maybe just answer the telephone at night, not those connected/related to the industry.

....and the actual number of 'technical' questions asked by potential customers is, in my experience, absolutely negligible!

Actually, I can only remember 1 in about the last 10 years and, yes, you guessed it, ...... he was a DJ!

However, I do agree that it is difficult to get someone answering the telephone who doesn't know the particular business practices of the person / company.

If it goes 'off script', they can only take a message and get someone to call back, which may at least keep those who have a strong dislike of answer machines on the hook until you can get back to them.
