Following on from my other accountant thread I'm interested to see how others do it.

So here's the choices:

Do it yourself?

Use a "proper" accountant?

Use a family member?

What are accounts?

I've always done it myself.

Fortunately, I also know someone who is an accountant, so if I ever need help, I just give her a quick ring.

My Nan does all mine as that's the job she has done for over 50 years...and still working aged 71!

All I have to do is make sure she has all the necessary receipts/invoices and then she does the rest.

Do my own. Although not qualified, I've been self-employed for over 25 years so well practised.

If I was only allowed to give one piece of advice, it would be to get an accountant.

Agree totally. It's amazing what you can legally, justifiably, and ethically offset against tax. I had no idea, until I had a word with my accountant.

Best piece of advice given to me :) ....worth every penny.
Tried on the 1st year - made a right pickle of it - fined £200. :( :( :(
So went out and got one - saved £450 :D :D :D :D ....and also got £198 back of the fine...don't know where the £2 went to.

What were you fined for out of interest, if you don't mind sharing ;)

I could have ticked two boxes

Proper accountant and family member

The better half does it, she's an accountant :D

I was finded because at that moment in time it was a partnership and submitted it on line but unknown to me parnerships could not be done on line so after 31 Jan I got £100 for me and £100 for the other half. So protested over it.

They did see my point as the account said it was not made clear and I should put this in a letter.....:)

Out of intrest I see someone voted for - What are accountants? - just like to understand why? :)

I have a theory, but on the grounds that it could be:
1) Correct
2) Illegal
3) My last post on here
then I'll keep it to myself. :zip:

Me too.

I don't understand why the option was there in the first place.

What I meant was that the "What are accountants" option suggests that people have never heard of them and / or don't know what they do.

I give my accountant all the month organized paperwork (once a year) and let her get on with it.

for £185 its worth it - i spend more money on toilet roll a year.

i can then focus on more interesting things like Djing and marketing

Okay, I should have said that's what it suggests TO ME.

I chose all of the first three options! I do the day to day stuff myself and my mum who's a qualified accountant helps with anything I can't do - I manage the returns myself too though.
