had a text off a "girl" friend tonight after the brits........

"hey can you give me kasbiens album"

Typical.......

Not sure what other peoples views on filesharing etc.. is on the site but I feel really strongly about it. No better than going into hmv and nicking the cd itself right?

Im kidda surprised you say that Darren. How can anyone think its legal?

Considering its what 79p for a track 99p somewhere and albums are 5/6 quid theres no excuse really?

Maybe Im just abit anal about it?

This is what surprises me in some of the interviews people have done on here. Only just started up yet got far more tracks than me. Ive paid for everything I have be it ripped from cd (for which I have produb) and direct from itunes/napster etc...

For me, there's a huge difference between friends sharing a couple of songs between each other, and a DJ using an illegal collection.

People don't think about it in terms of legal or illegal Neil. All they are doing is sharing their music. Do you really think they would look into the copyright law before they did it? You have to be realistic.

Why would school kids want to pay for a track when their mate can bluetooth the track over to them in a matter of seconds?

I'm not saying it's right, but that is the situation.

Using illegal tracks for business is another matter though.

interesting....

put a status update on facebook about this. All my dj friends have said itunes apart from one bedroom dj who uses beatport but i wont name and shame ;)

But the non djs seem not to use legal downloads and base this on the fact the artists appears to get very little of the money. I dont get the reasoning at all but maybe goes to show how uneducated on the fact they are?

Another good point was made about peoples jobs depend on download sales. Imagine if your job was under threat because people were stealing instead of buying?

They don't and if they did, they don't care. In my class at college, a class full of people hoping to make a career out of the music industry, 2 people put their hand up to say they purchased music legally. 2 people, shocking.

The fact of the matter is Joe Public is always on the lookout for a bargain. Whether it's downloading an album or dvd (sometimes before it's even been released at the cinema) from some torrent/file sharing site he's going to do that.

It's like the people who book sixty quid sid for their disco. They think they're getting a bargain and no matter what I don't think we'll ever be able to change that. A SIGN OF THE TIMES?????????:bang:

Most probably !!!!!!!

a) they do not know better
b) a lot of sids I know and have seen are actually very good
c) if price is everything then..............price is everything
d) contrary to belief you can make a good night with a bad DJ
e) after the function - does it really matter ??

rob1963

after the function - does it really matter ??

You said that people think a disco for £60 is a bargain, and I asked how many people still think that AFTER the gig.

My point was that some of the Sids will not turn up, and some of the ones that do will be toilet...so with hindsight, many of the clients will realise that Sid wasn't the bargain they thought he was after all.

Many higher charging dj's are toilet. I had a call last year from a bride who's DJ did not turn up. I charge high fees (for this area), yet the quote from the original DJ was higher than mine

If it was true and a majority of people did not think a £60 disco was a bargain and worthwhile, surely they would soon be out of business, and everyone would punt for the more expensive DJ.

Not wanting an 'area debate' - but that is why some of us have to work damn hard with each enquiry, and deliver to a very high standard to achieve higher fees. I am often asked about how I can justify my prices, and the fact is it is actually getting harder. :(

I really wish I could agree with you Rob. A lot of the sids do turn up, Chris is right some of them aren't bad. It's a fact of life I'm slowly having to deal with as they constantly blow me out of the water on price. Jan/Feb are prime examples of that. I've had about 40ish enquiries and secured so far.....4 bookings:bang:

Achieving higher fees has little to do with where you are based, but everything to do with your experience & the service you provide, as has been stated over & over again on this forum.

I am often asked about how I can justify my prices, and the fact is it is actually getting harder. :(

Funnily enough, that's the main reason why I don't charge more than I do...because the more you charge, the harder it is to justify your prices, and I don't want to find myself in that situation.

I've always thought my prices offer excellent value for money considering the amount of experience I have & the high levels of customer service I provide, and that's probably why I can't remember the last time I was asked to justify my prices.

I never said achieving higher fees has anything to do with where you live. What I do say and stick by is that it is a lot harder to achieve higher fees in certain areas - possible but harder work.

I am not picking on you Rob, but you say your website brings in most of your work and people compliment your disco. I am sorry, no disrespect to yourself, your web designer, business practise but your site is very basic and contains little information. If people are willing to book on that little information it shows how easier it is to gain fees.

Your large package (??) fee is higher than any DJ I know in this area and they have a hell of a lot better setup and website. I am talking about 'disco' fees here, many, as I do, increase their fees but only by supplying other services.

It is great you are so busy and work comes your way through your website. I am starting to work towards that aim, but it is very hard work and I will not say you can't get xxxx around here, but you do have to work very hard to get that bit extra.

I'll have to take your word for that, as it's not something I've experienced, because I've always lived & worked in the same area.

I am not picking on you Rob, but you say your website brings in most of your work and people compliment your disco.

I know you're not picking on me, and yes, my website brings in most of my disco work, and I get LOTS of compliments about what I do for clients.

I am sorry, no disrespect to yourself, your web designer, business practise but your site is very basic and contains little information.

I'm not sure about my site being very basic, but it's certainly simple & to the point. However, the general opinion seems to be that it's a very good site. After all, It's in the top 10% of disco sites which VectisVibe has seen (and he's seen hundreds!), and it brings in work at what I consider to be very reasonable rates (in most cases with the client not even wanting to speak to me on the phone - let alone meet me beforehand).

It's also worth mentioning that lots of the stuff on my site (as well as lots of the stuff which I removed) is as a direct result of advice given to me by a number of forum members.

I strongly disagree that my site contains little information. There is a summary of my business, some customer feedback, information about my discos, prices (unlike most!), my full terms & conditions and 30 frequently asked questions together with the answers (more than I've seen on just about any other site).

Your large package (??) fee is higher than any DJ I know in this area and they have a hell of a lot better setup and website.

They might have a better set up than me, but do they have as much experience as me, do they offer the same levels of customer service as me & do they get unexpected emails, cards & phone calls with excellent feedback from HALF of their clients?

VHS or Betamax Rob?

Definately VHS, Max!

Betamax was always going to fail, partly due to its shorter recording time and partly due to the lack of choice of models. This was due to all Betamax machines being made by Sony (who developed the format), whereas a number of different companies were manufacturing VHS recorders.

However very few would quote it as a fraction of what they do in the way you claim. If you have 4 functions this weekend are you going to collapse in a corner if you don't get anybody telling you that you're lovely in at least two of them??

I'd have thought that by now you'd know me well enough to know that I'm one of the most honest & open people on the forum about my business & how I run it.

As for sounding insecure, I'm surprised if I come over that way, as I can assure you that couldn't be further from the truth. However, if you'd said it to me 25 years ago, you'd have been completely right!

It may also surprise you to know that there are others on the site that also get positive feedback during and after their appearances

In this instance (and in this instance only! :p ) I think I understand what Martin is trying to say: the fact that you state that type of info so often comes across as if you're trying to impress. "Look at me, look at me!", whereas others just quietly go about their business and state only when the subject comes up that, yes, they get plenty of positive feedback. They do not feel the need the need to bring it up in unrelated threads or go into great detail about the number that they receive. The fact that you suggest that those others don't state the information because they don't get as many as they would like further exacerbates the scenario (ie a put down to others to push yourself up.)

The fact that you mention it so often can come across in a number of (very different) ways to different people. eg;-

a. Insecure
b. Gauche
c. Arrogant
d. Superior

Please don't think I am saying that you are any of these things, Rob, I'm merely trying to say how people could perceive the comments.

Thanks for your thoughts, Angela.

It seems that I'm sometimes too open & honest for my own good about my business & how I run it. As for repeating things, that's something I do when I think things are important. It's just the way I am.

As for coming across as trying to impress or saying "look at me", thats exactly what I think about many OTHER people when they go on about this or that bit of new kit they've bought, and post up pictures which they clearly hope will get everyone saying how wonderful it is! I also think some people come over as trying to impress when they talk about how many bookings they've taken, which is not something I discuss.

One thing I've discovered since joining the forum is the way we think we come across & the way we do come across can be two very different things, and the way we come across to different people can also vary immensly.

I just find it a bit strange that some people seem to think they can judge me when they haven't even met me!

At least I'm a man of my word, reliable & always do what I say, unlike many people on this forum. Venue database, anyone?

Anyway, we seem to be rather off topic. This isn't a thread about me or the way I post, it's about the way the general public think of DJs, so I'll bow out of this thread & let the rest of you discuss the topic in question.

Well with regard to Rob's apparent need for approval and congratulation ( and if he was seriously looking for it, this would be the last place he'd try ) I suspect that the point he's trying to make is that despite the lack of LED effects and Lasers, and a PA that doesn't have the top cabs covered in snow due to the altitude, for some reason which escapes me, his punters have a good time. :D :D They're also prepared to admit in public that they've had a good time. I think the point Rob's trying to make is that posh gear and loud cabs do not make a good disco. A good DJ with a good attitude is more important.
