Hi all,
Found this video, and actually some points in it, although a little obvious, are pretty good. Some parts are pretty damn funny too!
YouTube- DJs Dont do this

Hi Ollie,
You're right...some good advice in there, and he seemed to be making three main points.
Firstly, don't surf the web while DJing, as this could cause the laptop to crash, which is not good if it's being used for music playout! Also, it doesn't look very professional to someone (maybe even the client) who comes up to chat to you. I agree with this.
Secondly, he says don't sit down. We've discussed this on the forum before. Whilst I agree with this, I don't think it applies early in the evening when you're playing background music.
Thirdly, he says we should take requests, which sounds obvious, but clearly isn't...as more people come up and ask if I take requests than those who just ask me to play a certain song. Therefore, the perception of many people is that we DON'T take requests, although I'm not sure why this is.

I agree, I think the only acceptable time to surf the net is to download requests.

I also agree with this, Rob. I'm not going to waste my energy standing up during a 1 - 2 hour sit down meal when I'm going to have to be standing up during the party anyway.

That's a fair point actually, come to think of it at my last few gigs I've been asked if i'm taking requests rather than the guest just asking me to play a song...

Personally, I think he's an opinionated prat.
Yes, i bet he is the life and soul of a Party.

For me, it's not really about wasting energy.
To be honest, I'd just feel like a prat if I was standing behind the decks twiddling my thumbs for an hour & a half while the background music auto-played & while everyone else was sitting down & eating.
Personally, I think he's an opinionated prat.
Despite that, do you agree with any of his suggestions?

Only don't look at porn while you're working.
Taking requests is hardly an original suggeation.

when the woman said about not surfing the net,,
i think he's got confused,
what she probably meant was, the dj was using a laptop.
the fact is, when you see a DJ using a laptop, it really does look as if he's checking his emails, and thats probably what the woman meant.
but hey, the image of a laptop dj is probably another argument for another day:D

Can people see behind your S&H booth then Jeff?
They certainly can't see behind mine and even if they could, I have never had anyone in 7 years ask me if I'm checking emails.

Well that video was pointing out the obvious:bang:
Don't watch porn while working:eek: You mean there are actually DJ's out their fiddling while there working:eek: Thats nasty!
The whole stand up/sit down is the DJ's personal choice surely? Personally i like to stand up but i wouldn't be offended if i seen a DJ sitting down. Not like its affecting there performance in anyway.
I have never come across a DJ that point blank refuses to take requests.
I think that blokes a complete :Censored: if honest

But possibly quite a few who take requests but don't then play them, which is pretty much the same thing, really.

Sorry but I never sit down behind my console. Maybe its just me but if theres a sit down dinner and I dont feel its right me standing there I'll have a playlist set up on numark cue and set it to auto dj then stand away from the seating area but somewhere I could watch the gear.

Must admit, I am amazed how many DJ's browse this and other DJ forums whilst Dj'ing, even during 'prime time'
Although I put my hand up and have logged onto the 'top 10' lists for inspiration on more than one occasion, :o but always using my phone or netbook.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that one.
Makes him a self righteous opinionated prat with double standards somewhat doesn't it?

Agreed.
I can't even stand the tone of his voice - I reached 1.45 before turning it off.
