Am i under powering my subs...

Hi GUYS , i have a pair of these drivers http://www.precision-devices.com/showdetails.asp?id=7

and im running them off this

they are loud but i have read in another thread i need 1 & and half times bigger amp than drivers. i have always played it safe with having them the same....

would it sound any better (would i benifit from a bigger amp)...

As far as im aware there is no definative right answer, but 3 scools of thought on the subject.

1. Have the amp and drivers producing the same power so there is less chance of overdriving/bolwing something.

2. Have the amp more powerful than the drivers. More chance of blowing a cone, but as you are never pushing the amp, and if youre mindful of the volume, you get a "nicer" sound.

3. have the drivers rated higher than the amp. No chance of blowing any cones here, but you have to really drive the amp to get a good level of volume which reduced the sound quality (apparantly).

I think that about covers it, but im sure Tony will be along at some point to scare me about how little i actually know :D

1.5 to 2.0 times the RMS is a good match

PD make nice drivers, so don't starve them the power they can take to make them sing. 1kw+ will make them sound sweet.

also i cant belive the deal i got on these... ebay with logic crossover in cabs and poles £56.00 :D well thats about a year ago now.

I think a lot would depend if you have a passive or active crossover and what the quality of sound is before it gets to the amp , I noticed a big difference when I got a Denon mixer it seemed much loader and clearer, and also noticed a real improvement in sound when I got a very high quality amp I only have to have it half to two thirds volume.

I'd have to concur with that in the main. When my KAM went totally awry in the tone department ( as opposed to being generally iffy) I was fortunate enough to acquire a Denon from Beerfunk. The difference in the quality of sound was staggering. :eek: :eek:

Yes it really does make a difference ( of coarse I meant to say LOUDER not loader in my post lol ) I think it's probably the improved sound quality that makes it seem a fuller sound.

Never spotted the typo. The thing I love is that the tone controls now seem to have the desired effect. One of these days I must hear a Pioneer mixer, cos Darren says they sound better than Denon. I want the one that I was drooling over at BPM. :D :D I'm still convinced they've got the price wrong though. ;) :D :D

Remember an amp that is too low for a speaker can blow the speaker just as easily as over powering it if it clips. The old square wave pattern. I used to go by the double the rms power of my speakers and NEVER let them clip. That means the extra power is just for the spikes in signal when required but you must never let that clip.

I don't know much about them, but if you're on a budget, look at the Behringer EP4000

Should do not damage if you keep it in the green, so to speak.

Surely no appreciable difference betweeen a T-amp 2400 and a Berry 4000? :confused:

No personal experience of the Proline 3000, but I've seen many folk call it good value for money.

I run twice the RMS power into my subs.

However, I keep a very close eye on clipping and have dbx driverack with the limiters set on it.

I like to have plenty more power than I need,,

My two amps are both 1100 watts per channel rms (@ 8 ohms )

And my subs are 600w rms handling and the tops are 400w.


Obviously has to be used with some care,, but I dont have to worry about clipping...


And re Mixers,,,personally I find Formula Sound to sound the nicest, very closely followed (hardly anything in it) by A&H.

If you think Denons are good,,try one of the above :)
