Editing software

I have been asked by my sister in law to edit a track for her daughter to dance to at an exam. One of these very artistic types!!. I tried audacitiy, mp3 direct cut, but they won't recognise the track as it isn't in wav format. I have no idea, never done this sort of thing before. The track is russian roulette by rihanna. Any advice, or help would be gratefully appreciated. I don't think there are any legal issues, as it's not being used in public.

cant you convert it to a .wav ?

( there wont be any audio improvement, but it might then be recognised)

you could even do this task in a video editting program if you have one..

Do you have iTunes ? If so (and im assuming the track is in .wma if audacity wont open it) import the file into iTunes, convert it to an .mp3 using the option built into iTunes then open it up in Audacity and edit it as required.

tried this and it just says the file contains no video content??

What is the file extension type of the file you are working with ?

it's actually in my itunes library, and i have managed to find the help section to do it, nut it then says you cannot convert itunes purchased tracks.....:bang:

Oh right its a protected DRM. Only way to do it then would be to purchase a non drm protected version and convert that. Or record the file back into Audacity internally in realtime. Not ideal but if it is only being used for an exam and its disposed off afterwards there shoud'nt be an issue.

so i need to get hold of the album, save the track to something like windows media player and audacity would recognise it then????

Turn off all sounds on your PC (email notification etc) except audio playback

Open iTunes & Audacity

Press record on Audacity, press play on iTunes.

When the track finishes, edit with Audacity (making sure you remember to cut the dead air from the start of the track)

and make sure the recording input in Audacity is set to the soundcard you use so the pc is in effect playing back into itself. Do this in preferences.

Hi Steve, yes it is for domestic use, tried that and when i play it back in audacity to find the cue points , there is no audio, yet it played ok and i could hear it when i recorded it with audacity??

Checked preferences in audacity, playback is via microsoft sound mapper output and recording is via microsoft sound mapper input?

Have you tried sending it to the PC from CD via an analogue to digital converter. This is how I get Kev's demo tracks I have recorded on MD when we are out live onto the laptop and then use Audacity to edit out rubbish from the front and rear of them.
I use a Behringer UCA 202 to interface.

It should be much easier, but that would work.
