View Full Version : Data Analysis
Hi chaps
Who actually breaks down their annual data and works out if they are going forward or backwards.
I have been doing it but took another look and I have pulled a number of jobs at a single hotel out of last years figures as it was an odd arrangement through an agent and we haven't got it this year. The result is a stark reduction in last years figures, which in itself isn't that bad until it reinforces a downward trend in what we are doing.
We are in fact getting less work as we progress from putting more effort in. The more effort I am putting in is resulting in diminishing returns!!
How do I know this. Well we are doing less jobs but the income per job is up by a good amount. However, to achieve this I am putting in more time at the desk. So in fact over the amount of hours put in it is actually not making anything extra so probably not worth bothering.
I find that quite depressing and I was probably better off three years ago being a happy go lucky getting back into it DJ than applying my tuned property appraisal mind to what we do and proving it as being as profitable as cleaning pub toilets.
So what now. Keep on playing the hobby card or run to the end of the year and jack it in to the £100 to £120 boys. (its not a money thread it is a 'this is business after all thread') My money is on the let them have it card at the moment as it really is not worth it.

i think in all areas punters demand more value for money and more effort needs to be put in to stand still - I'm noticing at the moment the shock waves of the recession are still reverberating.

I just look at my net profit, which I work out when I do my tax return.
As long as that's increasing each year, I'm going forwards.
Simple!

Yes but when I work out how many hours I invest in servicing kit, organising everything, web site building, music ripping, etc. The return per hour invested isn't that appealing.
Its just as well I actually enjoy it rather than need the cash.

Is it though Rob, as you could easily get to a point where your time is better invested elsewhere.

Your data analysis has failed to take into account macro-economic trends - almost everyone is saying that work is down, harder to get, or that punters are more money-conscious - so you necessarily have to work harder for the same money. That, however, should put you in good stead when the upswing kicks in.

That's more likely if you don't increase your prices.
Mine went up late last year by way over the rate of inflation, and will be going up again this year.
Therefore, I'm doing the same discos for more money AND my profit increases each year, do I'd say I'm DEFINATELY moving forwards.

The point was could I invest my time better and based on current figures the answer is yes. I will keep looking at it up to the end of the year, but I am starting to wonder if I can be bothered and find something more profitable or rewarding to do with my weekends.

I enjoy what I do for a living. The recesssion did not affect me last year but bookings are definately down this year. Having said that I have bookings for next year already. Fortunately the linedancing continues to prosper; so all is not lost. I shall be 60 in a couple of weeks time. I always said that one day the business would give me up. Maybe that time is approaching.

I could get a MUCH better financial return on my time by heading back into a corporate full-time role.
But I wouldn't be as happy.
