I am looking to get one for a project. How do they tie to the stands? What stands do you use? What is the quality like and do they sit flat on the stands rather than creased?

There are fabric ties approx 10" long spaced about every foot around all 4 sides of the cloth. Tie the cloth to whichever framework you choose.

For simplicity sake I use the same gantry system as for my Cassandra screens - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=17792

and this gives me the flexibility to hang PARs etc. from the gantry too, if I wish to. 9 times out of 10 the cloth will hang from the top of the gantry (to mask it) and I don't use the T-bars. The gantry is exactly 3m wide to match the cloth, and the drop can be anything from 2m exactly up to about 3.5m.

i use 2 of them hanging 2m wide by 3m tall, which I chose to do this way rather than a 4m x 3m one as they are heavy to hang, they are pretty serge wool heavy cloths and very well made. They come with a power source and a control box. The power sources can be linked if you want to sync up more than one cloth, and if you search on youtube you can actually dmx them by making a short adaptor lead from a telephone cable.

As vectis mentioned they have ties along all four side and I just tie mine in a bow from the truss. When hung there is plenty of weight in the cloth to hang totally flat.

If you need to repair them (which you will from time to time with any starcloth) they are easy to get inside. The wires are very fine inside and the soldering is not the best in the world so be prepared to get the soldering iron out from time to time.

A part from that if you treat them with care you cant go wrong for the price.

Darren it's stable but not that robust. remember I was telling you at the SEDA meeting about my 'snapped' tripod extension thingy, well it was with this system. Because I was raising one side a couple of notches and then the other (so on and so forth) over a period of time the bit of the tripod that extends go weak, buckled and got stuck - when I tried to 'free' it the thing sheared in two completely. I probably did abuse the thing a little, but if you treat it gently and are only hanging the starcloth from it you'll be fine I suspect.

Very stable. The tripod legs can go out quite wide. Assembly takes about the same time as a basic deckstand - 4 or 5 minutes for one bod.

You must've been giving it hell! I've had two of these for about 3 years and use them regularly either for the large starcloths or the Cassandra screens without so much as a sheared plastic knob head (sorry couldn't think of a better term :p ). I would advise if raising the gantry on your own to only go up by one notch at a time though...

I bought two in order that I could make 4.5 and 6m gantries up when required.

I have one too and use a pop up exhibition stand a-la-ebay.... that and 4 bungee cords and the stand is up in 30 seconds! What I will say though is the starcloth is heavy and does take a little work to tighten and get looking good. The cloth itself is excellent quality though and well worth the money. I only use it when I am working in c**ppy venues where without use of backdrop it would spoil the look of my show.

I was surprised to find out that the NJD ones (not sure about others) don't come supplied with any form of stands, so what you're buying is just the cloth itself.

Because stands suitable for holding the cloth cost peanuts, a lot of dj's would already have them so why add to cost
