When you get an enquiry from someone who says they live abroad, 9 times out of 10 it's a scam.
It's also strange that the function is less than two weeks away, but he didn't even mention the venue!

Surely it's a bit strange that less than two weeks before the party he only has a proposed venue rather than a confirmed one?
These scams normally revolve around payment methods.
The usual trick is to "pay you" shortly before the event with a stolen or forged cheque, and by the time you find that out you've already done the gig.
Also, how many adult birthday parties have you done on a Monday evening from 5pm until 9pm? All the people who are going will either have to take the afternoon off work or turn up late!

What they will do is send you a cheque and ask you to pay other suppliers on their behalf - these other suppliers will actually be their colleagues in the scam, and the original cheque will bounce 2 weeks later, leaving you out of pocket.
The gig is entirely fictitious.

I have just had this. They sent a cheque to Penguins for made out to me and wanted me to pay the cake decorators and florsists, wouldn't give me a venue or location. Just ripped the cheque up in the end. I spelt a rat as soon as they said that the party was 10.30am - 3.30pm
