Right, I'm not an expert in this field, but have taken a school disco on for the following age groups:

Reception children (age 4-5) disco for 30 minutes

Years 1 - 3 disco for 1 hour

Years 4 - 6 disco for 1 hour

I don't normally do this age group, but did it as a bit of a favour as the school were really struggling to get someone and within their budget.

Year 5 -6 I won't have too much of a problem with, but it's the younger kids that I need help with.

I need 30 minutes of interactive party dances for the first half hour and then a mix of party dances and 'pop' tunes for the next hour.

I have already thought of:

Music man
Birdie song
YMCA
Superman
Crazy Frog...

I'm really looking forward to this...

Ok for the youngsters i tend to play really upbeat pop like the veronica's untoched, girls aloud love machine, 5678's woohoo etc. I have a pre mixed set of songs i use that you can do a dance routine too, 30 seconds of each song, the twist, surfin usa, hey were the monkees (get the kids acting like monkeys), macarena, timewarp, basically its full of songs that you can do routines too. You can do it as a group thing or get 10 kids up on stage to do it, should take 10 minutes to complete by the time youve got the kids up and explained etc.

High School Musical - Breaking Free
Lazytown - Bing Bang
Cartoons - Witchdoctor
Black Lace - Hokey Cokey
Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe
Bob the Builder - Can we fix it
DJ Casper - Cha Cha Slide
Fast Food Rockers - Fast Food Song
...Anything by Hanna Montanna...
Cheesy dance (basshunter - now you're gone & Scooter Jumping all over the world, etc)

All the above have worked well for me with younger kids events.

I'll leave it to all the others to give you all the usual suspects......

Gut feeling is they are all a bit too short for you to make any real impression.

A bit like being invited to Cheryl Coles hotel room for half -an- hour.Great fun for that period in time......But you wonder what you might be able to do if you could stop all night!!;) :D ;) :D ;) :D

Thanks for the ideas so far.

I asked the lady who was booking what the other DJ did and she said that he just played 'pop' music and did a few party dances.

This booking isn't a career move for me, so I'm not looking to make any real impression - just give them what they want and expect.

Hi

I just spent 20 mins composing a useful reply because children and schools are where we specialise but as is often the case, when i come to post, this forum (or this IP) has logged me out and everything is lost when I log back in. So to quickly summarise:

You can forget the music to some extent - go for Disney, Hannah Montanah, Glee, Avril levigne, chart such as lady gaga, party dances, hokey cokey you'll be fine. Fill in the time with games - pass the parcel, musical chairs, musical statues, balloon games (see childrens entertainers forum or google). The children will be more than happy - we use hula, spinning plates, balloon modelling, limbo (you could knock up a limbo pole easily or just get two of the kids to hold a limbo pole. Cover it with tinsel - and don't forget a mat for the floor - the school will probably have one)

Pm me if you want any more,

if you have any music dvd's of the dancy songs a couple of screens with the dvd playing works very well. Kids tend to become mesmerised and are more likely to follow the moves off a tv.

I've been doing the same primary school for the last couple of years, and I have to say that they don't want or expect any games from me. The only party dance type things I generally play are "Hokey Cokey", "The Conga", "Cha Cha Slide" and "Macarena".

The later disco for the older kids is pretty much solid chart, R and B type stuff (that we all just lurve to play....).

Some of the pop party and dance party cd's contain DVDs as well ;)

Maybe not totally professional, but the kids love it and have had nothing but positive comments. (Makes my life easier too :D :D )

I'd be surprised if you need a lot of games. I used to do a Nursery School, and it was just play the music. Same songs on a one hour delay. ;) I hope you like the crazy frog, I've been known to play it six times before now! You may be amazed at what requests you get. ;) Elvis, Rock and Roll, and the Stranglers were among the ones I could play.

Here's a track which might work: Monster-The Automatic. Lots of shouting with the chorus if it does.

Best tune to play....Walk Like an EGYPTIAN...(3.24) just long enough...

Split into Boys Versus Girls....

Tell them you'll need a Team Captain.... FOR EACH....they love that!!

Sorry, but that post is a complete waste of time. I don't do kids parties generally and won't be again for a while. I want to be organised and know exactly what I am doing and when.

Sheesh....if you can't answer the post Martin, then please don't bother.

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

I have done my research. I have done quite a few kids parties in my life but not recently. I have spoken to Mr Mayhem and know what is involved. I have kids of my own, so have had their opinions on some of the tracks and I have worked extensively with kids in the local community over the last 5 years.

Obviously I will fail at this because I am not you and don't do it your way.

I would go with an open mind Darren.

Your playlist is great (give or take a few)

I think you will be surprised what kids (of any age) dance too.

I had a bunch of Year 8's doing YMCA at the weekend and one of the comments from the mum's was: "How an earth did they enjoy that - I even managed to have a little dance!"

I think it's how you word it on the mic as well, which you know all about. The Congo and Amarillo was actually requested!

"Alright, let's give the birthday boy one big cheer....OK, everyone get into a huge circle and hold hands. I do this everywhere I go be it a wedding or birthday party (I don't really) and t's great fun. I'm sure you remember the hockey cockey from when you were child? Well, were going to do that but speedy up"

It's great and actually good fun.

I like to take some of the old "cheesy" stuff and put a different slant on it.

In my extremely humble opinion, neither of you are wholly right, nor wholly wrong.
Martin, your advice to our esteemed leader is broadly correct, although your tact and diplomacy are virtually non-existent. :( :( :(

Darren, while I applaud your preparation and thoroughness, I'm always wary of doing the gig before you arrive. Usually when I've done that, the plan goes out of the window very early.
Neither do I intend to gainsay Mayhem, or the punters themselves, but I too would cheerfully play a lot of section 1 in section 2 as well, and possibly even section 3. Also, I'd be surprised if said young punters didn't supply you with enough requests for a week at least.

Darren, perhaps even though I'm a doddery grumpy old git, I appear by your own admission to have done more kids parties than you lately. I'm telling you what has happened at most of mine. That's all. To get this thread back on topic...

Darren: yep, I reckon you're pitching it about right, and I think you're very wise to have a 'plan' in place to cover the requisite time.

For those on here that don't agree.... I'd argue that you can always adapt a plan to suit the situation, if things go off-piste.

Only thing I would add Darren: have a couple of other games 'in reserve', in case you get little darlings who only respond to rigid organisation. We do kids parties where the 'odd' game is enough, but others need to be told what to do (and yes, we too also make it very clear that we do children's discos as opposed to being children's entertainers). Having a few extra games to fall back on if necessary may just save your sanity!

:

Angela, I appear to be in the "Don't Agree" camp. ( Not on purpose, I just seem to have appeared there by chance). I never said I was right, and I never said Darren had to do it my way. I simply related how most of mine go. Like I said, I'm definitely not a Children's Entertainer, and I make this clear from the outset. I do seem to get by with happy punters, and what's left of my sanity though. ( Not much nowadays, granted. :( :( )

Soooooooooo, anyway...

This party happened yesterday.

It went well. According to the lady who booked it "You were a hit" The kids liked it and also the parents made plenty of positive comments too.

The 4 year olds were the easiest IMO. I spoke on the mic and as none of them had been to a disco before, they were all immediately silent! i went onto the dance floor and within 30 seconds had them all screaming and shouting, boys vs girls style. I must admit, this was the age group that I wasn't looking forward to, but I found it quite easy. I played a couple of games as suggested my Mr M and did a few party dances helped and aided by the parents who were all in attendance. Their party lasted for 45 minutes and the only bit that could have been organised a little better was when they were taking the kids in and out to get drinks and snacks. It kind of stopped the flow a little and led to a slight anti-climax at the end.

The next age group were OK too, though the game I had planned didn't happen as one of the children was scared of the Mummy game as it reminded her of Halloween. I later found out that this particular girl is fussy about a lot of things. Shame really. This is where dedicated kids entertainers would have come into their own as they would have had lots more games to choose from, however I did more party dances instead.

The last group were years 4, 5 and 6 and the split here was 75% chart music and 25% party dances and a limbo competition which they loved. I gave away a few easter eggs for best limbo dancer and best dancer. Lots of requests were played and I made the mistake of asking them if they like Justin Bieber. My ear drums are still recovering...

After the first party, I got asked for a card and I said that I didn't really do kids parties to which I got a strange look back and the reply of "But you're brilliant with the kids"!!

In summary, I enjoyed doing it, but it was very full on and I found that I needed 100% concentration all the time. I could have been a little more organised with having more games to hand and I should have either had someone with me to do the music or made playlists up beforehand, so that I didn't have to rush back to change the songs.

It was a nice school with plenty of friendly parents, teachers and governors who helped me out and got involved with the dancing and the kids and I am pleased I went 'back to the floor' to remember what it's all about.

Would I do it again? Probably, but not in a hurry. A couple a year would be fine for me. The organiser knew I wasn't a dedicated kids entertainer and really appreciated the fact that I did them a very special price and kept asking me if I would do another one for them, so that was nice.

It was worth doing and thank you for all the help and suggestions.

Glad it was a success, I'm just about to start loading up to go and do an Easter School Disco, which starts at 6.30pm. I hope I get the reaction you got, I did the last time. I agree with you that you need someone to get the next track on, without having to run back and forward. ;)

Thanks.

The girl who was scared was one of the teachers children unfortunately, so I didn't really have a say in the matter.

And yes, I should have had a couple of spare games ready to go, but I did manage to blag it with more party dances instead.

Just got back from my Primary School disco, tired but elated, all the children and the adults enjoyed themselves. So much so, that I've got another booking for their End of Summer term party, so can't be bad.

Got to say a big thank you to Darren and others who have posted recommended playlists for these types of parties, they were all spot on. But what is it about, Justin Bieber that the children go crazy about?

Also, a HUGE thank you has got to go out to the GOD that is called Mr. Mayhem. You certainly know your stuff, when it comes down to these types of parties, your pdf which was posted up on party games is a godsend.

I don't know if I dare offer advice to the Supremo (POST 46) but that is currently our most popular game....It may slightly upgrade your Huge Water Pistol Game that I've seen on U-Tube!!

Not a million miles from what I tend to find at these functions. Beforehand, apprehension, trepidation and tension. During the gig, loads of concentration as well, and afterwards, a nice warm feeling, and finished in time for a pint on the way home. :beer1: :D :D

I concur. ( But I usually end up with more than a couple. )

I have nothing but admiration for the likes of Mayhem, who choose to aim at this market.
