View Full Version : Don't forget YOU'RE a DJ

Following a discussion I had with Steve Hanley when we were out, and a similar comment by a bride a few weeks ago.

The brides comment was 'It was great to see you well presented, the meeting beforehand was really useful but what we enjoyed most of all was that you did not forget you were a DJ and entertained us brilliantly. We did have another DJ in mind beforehand, but after seeing him at a friends wedding changed our minds straight away. Yes he was well presented, polite and made extensive enquiries with our friends before their wedding. The problem was with all this formality he seemed to forget he was there as our entertainment for the night, it was good to see you relax a lot more as the night went on'.

I think Steve will back me up when I say although I am not too cheesy, I do try to entertain once in the swing of a gig. This brides comment got me thinking though and has made me more aware that whilst the 'posh bit' is needed in preparations I must remember the importance of having to 'loosen up' a bit as well.

Any thoughts ??

Its nice to let your hair down when you've got the crowd going and you start to enjoy yourself, if you enjoy yourself the crowd will read off of that and start to enjoy themselfs aswell.

I've said many a time that the entertainment value has been taken out of what we do, but then I am an out and out entertainer, have been around a long time and would still class myself as a 'personality' jock.

There are plenty of people who tick all the boxes with regards to running a tight ship and proper business, but I'm not sure how good they are at actually DJing. ;)

I thought the idea of having an entertainer was to get the guests going by appearing to be having a good time in the first place and the guests reacting to that not the other way round?

Ah well maybe the music does the entertaining then :D

I worked with a very competent likeable DJ last night at my Cambridge University SU gig ---plenty of laptop and high tech equipment for play out--no sign of a Microphone anywhere--but then following my warm up set--no point:D

Especially when your using an 8k system with Martin Audio Standard Subs and tops plus their giant sub units --2 x18inch drivers in each cab:eek:

Let the music do--you know the rest;)

I think its a valid point but also think it works the other way too.

I can use the mic when required but am not a true personality DJ but this also works well for many clients.

Each to their own as usual.

I think its much harder being a personality jock when you have Ultimax Stands or S&H Starcloths obscuring half of your body.;) ;) ;)

Personality....lets think now....who needs personality....I know....A COMEDIAN.How many of them do you see doing their act behind a kiosk!!

When all is said and done the modern day rig looks pretty much the same as it did 50 years ago....apart from the Lightscreens which God Forbid I've seen portrayed on here as still in use!!

So if you really want to be part of the fun and the party....why not remove any barriers between you and your guests!!!I've managed to not say the word...not for the fainthearted tho!!:D :D :D :D :D

Very very boring now Martin and nothing to do with having a personality.

I like the look of my kit and arrange it to create a certain image and that has nothing to do with me having a personality and doesn't affect the way I work.

You want personality....have a look at the U-tube clips of Mr Mayhem...thats personality!!(I've spoken to him tonight too!!)

Chris and I touched on this topic a fair few times during the gig on Friday.
Yes I will wear a collar and tie to dj in if my client thinks it would be appropriate although I will admit I've never been comfortable wearing this kind attire whilst djing and the tie comes off first chance i get.

Chris is excellent on the mic much better than me but I'm getting better, but I think and I hope Chris backs me up here I think my best strenghth is the ability to read the dancefloor as good as anyone and been able to keep people there for more than just one dance.

We had to be able to that on Friday as there were'nt any seats in the room where we played

This is a very good point, and something that it took me a while to grasp.

The sight of a DJ in a tuxedo dancing around probably looks a bit funny, it is possible to overdress as well as underdress, But I think that all this 'formality' and professionalism can take over the entertainment factor.

Which is better? a DJ with messy cables, bad dress code who does a good job at entertaining, or a Professional DJ who is neat and presses buttons all night, making it NOT a night to remember.

Think back to Rob's first post in the gallery forum :D
( just kidding Rob ;) )

What about Sooty? Never saw him unless he was behind a stand or booth obstructing half his body. He made me laugh though. Sue did too. The Policeman didn't nor did the crocodile with a jaw full of sausages....or was that Punch and Judy? Hang on..... they had a booth too!!

Conclusion: Never under estimate anyone with a booth. Or sausages. Or a wand.

Correct, he's not behind a stand.

1. Not everyone, especially in the market I work in, wants that kind of interaction.

2. Mr Mayhem doesn't set up 'side saddle' either.

I did a Wedding Fayre the other weekend, and every Bride that I spoke to came up with the same statements, I don't want someone who's going to talk over every record, and I don't want any of those nasty, "joiny in" type cheesey songs. Its the comment that I get all of the time. I've had one Bride this year that has wanted a DJ that would get everybody singing shouting and joining in, which is absolutely no problem, its what I grew up doing, but most just see it as "old hat"

Ive had the opposite of that recently. Lots of calls with customers asking for their dj's to 'get people going' and 'use the mic to gee people up' and specifically for their dj's not to just stand there playing songs.

I would have to agree with Darren, having been in this business for a long time, we are booked as entertainers. And as entertainers we use our experience and knowledge built up over the years to read the type of people at the functions that we are playing to, as whether a personality dj, mixing dj, etc.is required at that time of the evening. We are there to get a reaction, dancers on the floor and smiling happy faces during the evening and on their way home.
As has been said, organisers of functions might say that is what they want, or not want when booking us, but I've never been balled out by a bride or organiser after a disco, for playing some cheezy pop/tunes, when they had said that they didn't want to played, after their guests had told them that they had a great time. The majority of time we get it right, then there is the odd time we get it wrong, but thats the big difference between us and an i-pod, we inter-react. ;)

It's all down to people viewing things in extremes again, though isn't it?

When the public think of a DJ interacting with the crowd, so many people automatically think of the out-dated, cheesy, cringe-worthy stereotype, which they don't want.

To be "hoist by [or with] your own petard" is to be blown up by your own bomb. A petard was a medieval engine of war consisting originally of a bell-shaped metal container filled with explosives. It was used to blow in a door or a gate or breach a wall. Premature explosion was an ever-present danger. In other words, you could be hoist by your own petard.

In other words you state " when I hear the word entertainer, DJs are not the first people I think of.

They would come a fair way down my list after the likes of singers, comedians, magicians, ventriloquists, impressionists etc."

However, you describe yourself as Rob James Entertainment.

My business is called Rob James Entertainment because I provide entertainment. However, that doesn't mean I see MYSELF as an entertainer...especially when compared to singers, comedians, impressionists, ventriloquists, magicians etc.

This is because the above-mentioned people are doing their OWN live entertainment most (if not all) of the time...but as a DJ I am playing the pre-recorded songs of OTHER people most of the time.

In my opinion there is a big difference.

Rob, the reason people pay for the services of a DJ is because it is a hell of a lot cheaper (millions of £'s in fact) than hiring every band/singer/group that they like to turn up at their function and entertain them.

Thus the DJ takes the place of the said artistes and entertains the crowd in their honour using their material.

Some DJ's entertain better than others, some have more expensive equipment than others but all this aside they are hired for entertainment.

Perhaps you should look at your unsolicited feedback and your diary of bookings for the forseeable future and decide whether you are any good at entertaining or not..........I think I know the answer.

It's all down to people viewing things in extremes again, though isn't it?

When the public think of a DJ interacting with the crowd, so many people automatically think of the out-dated, cheesy, cringe-worthy stereotype, which they don't want.
You called? :D :D

or hate them, and as I said earlier, in my experience, more of the latter than the former!
I think that people often say they don't want that, because it's not fashionable. However. Lowest Common Denominator is by definition popular. The Sun sells more copies than the Times. Cha Cha Slide usually gets more folk on the dancefloor than say Bob Dylan. ;)

Interesting, because when I hear the word entertainer, DJs are not the first people I think of.

They would come a fair way down my list after the likes of singers, comedians, magicians, ventriloquists, impressionists etc.
Which you don't supply. Sorry mate, Pete's got you banged to rights on this one. Game set and match.

Rob, like the saddo that I am, I've just looked up in the Collins English Dictionary and Thesaurus and the definition of "entertainer", and it is "a person or persons who provide amusements, banquet, cheer, diversion, feast, festival, pastime, reception, recreation, sport or treat".

Therefore you are classified as an entertainer, it's not like you've got the plague!!

Your obviously good at what you do, as it's how you make your living:clap: :approve2:

Exactly.

A DJ entertains the crowd by playing OTHER PEOPLE'S material which was pre-recorded...whereas a singer, ventriloquist, comedian, dancer, magician is performing their OWN material live.

I'm not saying a DJ is not an entertainer, merely that I don't put them in the same bracket as live performers like those mentioned above.

If they walk out of the room, the entertainment stops...whereas if a DJ walks out of the room, the entertainment carries on (just like it does when I go to the loo at a gig!)

There's nothing to say that I haven't already said. I charge £100 for two extra lights. That's it!

I beg to differ.

Apart from that, he's not in my good books at the moment...and he knows exactly why.

Yes...I'm classified as an entertainer.

However, I don't think of DJs as entertainers in the same way as comedians, vents, singers, dancers etc as I've already tried to explain.

...erm, well you did say that you didn't see yourself as one...

However, that still doesn't mean I see myself primarily as an entertainer.

I'm not twisting anything, merely trying to explain how I see the DJ & entertainer thing, but sadly failing...for which I apologise.

I'll therefore bow out of this thread now & let the rest of you continue the discussion.

The position of a DJ is to play "Discs", which not all operators use these days, :)
I think you'll find that most do, unless their music is stored on thumb drives, memory cards, or one of those new fangled no moving parts hard drives, a disc is still involved somewhere :sj:

It depends what you mean by All night, as mentioned, some will get down on the dancefloor and interact with the crowd, I have seen it happen more in the USA though.

Call me insular & unambitious Max, but I haven't done any gigs stateside ;)

I see Robs point 100%.

The package hiring a DJ is to provide entertainment, but the DJ himself doesnt have to be an entertainer.

Just as the guy who presses play at the cinema doesnt take credit for the film being so good!!

alright, i know we do a little more than press play :) but its the entire package music, lights, structure of music etc etc that is entertaining. not the DJ. in my experience those DJs who 'think' they are entertaining are generally unfunny, annoying, insulting failed comedians.

as ive said before though, some DJs are very good at it - warming the crowd, getting people up, but im not going to call someone an entertainer for doing that! - ive never been entertained by it.
