View Full Version : Christmas & New Year?

Howdy folks,
I just wondered how the Xmas and NYE bookings were looking for you?
I have ZILCH for the Xmas season at the moment, but I have secured NYE's. A few of the Masons from the Nottingham Ladies Night, have put my name forward to do the main East Midlands Masonic NYE party.
They normally have a band but said they "loved the disco" and the fact I had a "dance with the crowd" so would like me to join them on NYE. Apparently they have a good turn out every year.
It's a good 30/40 minutes drive from where I live; so hopefully I will be driving a van buy then - otherwise a mini bus will be astronomical!
It's pretty decent money too. :beer1: I'm not sure whether to ask for a bigger deposit? My normal policy is to pay £50 beforehand and then cash on the night or a cheque 7 days before.....
I'm a tad worried about no bookings for Xmas though....
Wedding's this year are looking pretty amazing for "ME" with 10 in June, July and then the beginning of August. (before I go away to get a real tan ;)
Anyway, just wondered how things are panning out you're end? - I know Darren is struggling for work in December too. ;) ......Not.

It is way too early to be worrying about Xmas Charlie. I have to start thinking about it about this time, in light of new clients etc

Well, before you know it...you'll be buying a Christmas tree and wrapping paper. ;)
I want to build a new Xmas page for my (hopefully new site) and get in touch with a few hotel's and agencies....
I don't know why, but I feel this urge to take everything 100% more seriously...
I filled in my application for Tax today  That's saying something. ;)
I think having the ability (soon!) of crashing a van has something to do with it. :sj:

NYE and two of the Fridays are a regular customer's dinner dances, the other two gigs are weddings(new clients through the website). The free Saturdays will probably be weddings too if previous years are anything to go by..... in fact 80% of all my gigs are weddings. :)

Getting back on topic, my last booking for this year is currently at the beginning of October.
I'll probably end up with one or two discos in December like the last couple of years...which will be fine for me.
The days of doing discos every Friday & Saturday in December are long gone.
I have plenty to think about & keep the money coming in with all my quiz nights anyway.

I'm booked every Saturday in November, and a Wedding on New Years Eve.
Haven't even started talking about Xmas parties yet, but confident of some repeats from last year. :)

Why do you go quiet Rob?
Charlie,
Most of my marketing is aimed at the wedding market, as that accounts for about 90% of my work, so I don't really get enquiries for christmas parties.
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to do 7 or 8 Christmas parties which were given to me by my friend's agency, but the money was crap as he took his cut & charged a fair bit less than me in the first place, and I just got fed up with working my :Censored: off every December for a very mediocre financial reward.
My new policy is to only take my OWN bookings in December now, and for the two years I've been doing this I've either done one or two gigs that month...which I've been quite happy with.
Most of my work probably comes in around 6 months in advance, so I'm not surprised or worried that I have no bookings after 2nd October at the moment.

No Charlie,
To be honest, I got a bit fed up with doing xmas parties anyway...probably due to the way some of the punters behaved.
Give me a wedding any day!
:D
Do you work NYE?
Yes.
I usually do one of my quiz pubs, although a couple of years ago I even decided to take THAT night off for a change...even though the landlady kept asking me to change my mind about not working that night.

Wonder how we're all doing?
I've got four (including NYE) so it's rubbish!
I've had two enquires today (which reminded me about this thread) for the same two dates I'm already booked. :o
I reckon if you're not well in with a hotel/venue then work can be very hard to find.

This week I've taken three bookings for December and I know of venues who have yet to sign contracts....
I wouldnt panic just yet...

i am working every friday and sat from now till christmas except by 1 friday in november and 1 sat in december. So for me very busy.:)
6 contract, 2 private so far. Would be happy if that was our lot, and can now afford to be a choosy when it comes to NYE as both private ones are good earners.

I agree. Most of the work is in these venues. Companies don't bother to book a venue and then organise their own entertainment in my experience.
Oh, and 130 provisionals here....

I agree too, for christmas parties you need to 'get in with a venue'.
However, I concentrate on my main markets and do ok with bookings. I have one residency giving 18 bookings, yet I also have 6 weddings and 8 corporate nights booked.
NYE - zilch again, and I would be very suprised if that changed. The only downside is loosing 2 weekends this December.

My December disco work consists of a wedding on 3rd and a pub on 31st, and is unlikely to increase, which will do me very nicely!
A couple of years ago I decided to end my days of doing about 15 agency christmas parties for rubbish money.

I've had my regular pub confirm for NYE but nothing more then that, but im guessing that the "Upcoming Events" on my website might be a clue why lol
Oh ive got a Xmas kids party at the same pub a few days before.
Cheers Dave :)
I have NYE and nothing else in November or December. It's all gone quiet. Gives me a chance to collect my thoughts on what 2011 will bring.

I feel a bit better. It appears that the big guys like Darren, Ben etc who have contracts are doing well but others not great.
If the Hilton phoned me now and asked me to work every Weds-Sat doing corporate doo's I'd probably :Censored: my self, buy a bottle of champers and then run around the house screaming like a blue arsed fly.
One day. ;)

I've got every Friday and Saturday in December booked (including Xmas Eve, NYE and NY day), plus a few midweek jobs in the 2 weeks prior to Xmas.
As it is my full time job, which I enjoy, I've always looked at it as "making hay whilst the sun shines", it also enables "her indoors" and myself to enjoy a bit of winter sun in either January or February, when things can quieten down a bit. :)

I would not want a residency as I like the different venues. I have 3 weddings, two handicapped society parties and 5 children's parties including 2 corporate already booked. Lots of these are due to past contacts and being a children's entertainer/magician as well as a dj.
Children's parties are very popular these days and I have taken 2 today already. If you are short of work give it a try. It is hard work with kids from 3 upwards as I found out last week when I entertained at a 3yr old birthday party for 1.5 hrs non-stop. I did a magic show for approx 40 mins in the middle and they loved it. If interested get in touch with your local magic club/society or whatever and go to the meetings. Help is always there if you ask.

In January I had most days in december booked except 27th,28,29, dec - as most of my bookings are repeats - i normally know what I'm doing well in advance - with the recession I now have only xmas eve & new years eves bookings left :( - as I dont advertise as such its hard for me too puck up work.
But
in last week have picked up 2 16 year old parties in december and also awaiting confirmation of another one.
Ok I'm gonna be way out of my normal type of discos but I'll learn very quickly and hopefully do them proud and hopefully pick up more bookings from them :)
Patience Charlie the phone may ring - as for bookings being 30-40 mins away I wish sometimes most of mine were :)
