just had a very interesting conversation with a guy at sound and lighting express,i'll give you the full history --
had a light delivered off them a fortnight ago--(skytec new moon, brand new £20 plus £8 delivery) delivered on march 16th,ordered another on 17th and used the first on friday the 19th,after 20 minutes the light stopped working and on closer inspection the wires to the bulb holder had become burnt -- first thing monday i contacted the firm and they said to return for a repair, did this the following day and paid delivery of £9.63,light came back this morning still not working and i phoned to tel them, guy said he would arrange a courier to collect but wouldnt be today or tomorrow, i asked what about gigs i have to do weekend and next with bank holidays and all,at this he turned stroppy said it wasnt his fault and suggested i go out and hire a light as "this is only a twenty quid light pal,and its not my fault it dosent work" at this point i said £20 or £200 i paid for a light not a broken box. with which he replied "i'll call you" and put the phone down --- excellent customer services !!!

While their attitude sucks, and it is their responsibility to ensure that the lights are supplied in working order - it probably would have been better to have learnt from your experience with the first one and just returned it for a refund and cancelled the order for the second.
I know this is harsh, but it's Skytec, and it's a £20.00 light - In all honesty, what did you expect?

Not good service really....
But - what did you really expect? How long generally do you think a £20 light is going to last? It is £20 for a reason. Cheaply or badly made and not made to last. There are exceptions of course. I'm sure some has got a light they paid 20p for and it's lasted 10 years....

Losing his rag was out of order, but I have to say, I think he was offering to do what he ought to be doing without any prompting - ie he was arranging for collection & repair/replacement.
If I was in his shoes, I too would have been somewhat miffed if a customer was looking for hire /compensation payments / whatever on top of that for a £20 light. The difference being, I wouldn't have lost it like that or hung up. (I'd wait until I had explained that wasn't possible and was off the phone before I vented! :D )

Although it was only £20, any product sold should last a 'reasonable time'.
How long is reasonable for a £20 light ?????

not exactly right corabar --he had already had the light for a week on repair once at my expense(came back not working) -- and i asked for a replacement and he refused point blank, although i only paid £20 for the light it isnt a cheap and nasty jobbie --one firm on ebay is selling them for £105 plus postage and packing -- i am buying them for less tham cost off sound and vision express as they are old stock (a point which has been made to me quite forcefully on more than one occasion "listen pal, were already losing money on these without all this hastle" was one quote i had off matey boy!!!!
the lights are a copy of njd datamoons (look identical but not as smooth in movement) but for the price are a decent effect (for a short time only though:bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: ) but would look nice in a pair for decent coverage.

Customer services should handle each call the same, whether it's for a £20 light or a 2 grand sound system and if the product is a load of cr@p then why would they bother to stock it if it could affect their reputation.
In my job I get payment queries from many suppliers, whether it's for 10,000 washers totalling £50 or for 200 cylinder blocks totalling £30k then the same process applies.
But seriously if you have a few gigs lined up and you care about your business then you should not be buying £20 lights IMO.
:)
Edit...just saw your post regarding the price.

Yup, that was shoddy.

They're having a laugh trying to sell them at that price, you can buy a pair of Acme Magic Gobo's (250w with separate colour/gobo wheels - and a reputable brand) for £139.00 (http://www.getinthemix.co.uk/Magic-Gobo-Lighting-Kit-By-ACME.htm).

Yeah, that's just rude.

Except for Datamoon's being DMX controllable, and having separate colour/gobo wheels. The case looks similar though :o
I think you might have discovered why the guy is so keen to get rid of them - I think he might have figured that at £20/each people would just buy them and either repair or put up because of the low price. My vote would still be for returning them, getting a refund and putting it down to experience.

Magic Gobos or Datamoons don't have seperate Colour and Gobo wheels.. not sure where you got that from?
Is this the SAVE in Cheltenham? And do you know who it was you spoke to?ouple of the guys who work there and they've always seemed reasonable enough to me.

Sorry - mis-read the "two stepper motors" bit on the Prolight website... It appears I've also misread NJD's website which says:
Dichroic colours : 7 + White (20 beams)
Gobos : 7
Apparently that means 7 gobo's, each of which are a different colour, not 6 colours & 7 gobos (duh).
I stand corrected...

Cheeky git. :p :D :D No, not 20p, but £20 coincidentally. I went into the shop to buy a second Abstract twister2, with the 100w bulb. Guy in the shop suggested that two 50w vastos were same price, same power, and divisible. I bought the vastos, and guess what? They outlasted the Abstract, and they're running every week in a local club.

It had been back for repair, and returned not working. Customer has reason not to be a happy bunny also.

Absolutely. I'd expect it to do at least a couple of gigs. :D :D
