Earning Good Money from Working Mens Clubs etc

Sorry - Another money thread. :) :)

Would like to share an 'unusual' booking I taken earlier in the week.

I had an enquiry for uplighting, disco, projection slideshow using their photos, ceremony music, afternoon background music whilst having the meal and a 1 hour kids party to keep the kids amused after the meal. No problem, except the venue is a Social Club just outside of EASINGTON of all places. (if you have not heard of the place it is the sickness capital of Britain and notorious)

I done a race night in Easington not too long back which is where they saw me. Anyway I thought no chance, but give a quote and the usual sales talk anyway. I actually worked out the price to be £1080. (bearing in mind a VERY long day and early setup) So sent e-mail away with this quote (TBH I would normally reduce to say £950 but since I thought not a cat in hell chance I might as well really upset them). Half an hour later, I received a phone call asking for a meeting asap. 2 hours later I am sitting in their living room. Chat, tea, paperwork, sign, chat, goodbye - £500 in my back pocket with the rest to be received in 2 months (wedding in september). No quibbling or nothing. Had to have a stiff drink when home as still could not believe it.

The best of it was - they are having the projection slideshow as they can't afford a photographer ??? Even at my super low photography prices.
Now that to me is a first - stuff the photographer but spend over a grand on a DJ ??

Worrying thing is - I still only have 6 par cans as never really done much uplighting, and this room is huge :D :D

Anyway - the moral of the story - EVERY enquiry IS a potential booking !!!!
This is not the first time this has happened to me - a enquiry I think most would disregard turning into a fantastic (by my standards anyway) booking.

Well done on securing the booking, it was obviously because they liked what they saw on the race night.
At least you can shell out on a few more uplighters just to be safe and then your show benefits and you may get a few more bookings because of that.

Excellent work. Just shows that confidence and professionalism can pay dividends in any area.
I'm sure you're on the case already but a great opportunity to strike while the irons hot and offer to be their regular DJ/Functions person.

Hmm...........
Have played at similar venues where the steward has approached me after the gig. When they find out the price, I normally have to phone for an ambulance :D :D

I do have a couple of regular club venues where I do cheaper gigs which helps but TBH do not think it is worth spending too much time advertising in such venues. In fact I am charging more per hour than most regular social club DJ's charge for a whole night and the commitees seem to be stuck in a time warp :D :D :D

Absolutely ... dropped into my local WMC last week to find that i have been undercut by £40 sid :bang: i will still be used for private parties though, he will just do the 'free' nights ... mainly because i don't leave massive gaps between records, cut records in the middle, have skipping cd's and let drunken people sing on the mic as some sort of pseudo karaoke effort.

Bizarrely the punters were enjoying the whole experience, and the guy does have a good knowledge of the 50s and 60s ... but it doesn't make me wonder why i bother sometimes. :confused:

Well done on getting this mate, Its rare for me to WMC's now. I actually did a 40t in one in Leicester a few weeks which was a good laugh, the staf thought I was "amazing" and "the best DJ they have had for years" which made me feel good. They must get some real rubbish in there :)

I did an all day job with uplighting last summer for a wedding at a WMC in Hinckley, staff couldnt believe how much I charged, but were blown away with the transformation of the place.

The bride for that event was aware of how important the entertainment was and hence why a lot of her budget went towards it, if only all brides did this :)

Actually i think it might have been :D ... but then again i did say 'good' knowledge lol :) :) :) :)

It's actually another guy who drinks in the club who gets used when the customers don't want the 'full on' experience.

some WMC and similar are absolutely loaded and regularly splash £600+ on singing duos etc.

if i were you, i would use £200 of that £500 to get 4 more uplighters (at least) and youve nothing to worry about then, and a big balance to come.
