Humm/buzz on mic's

Hi all, please excuse my ignorance but I need a little advice!!!
Until now I've just been a bedroom DJ, but I now have my first paying gig(only for family, but a big step for me)Anyway, my mixer went bang last week and being a little short of funds I had no choice but to buy what I could afford off ebay as a quick replacement(temp).I've bought a KAM GMX5 Mk2, quite happy with it but it only has 2 Mic' inputs and I do a little Karaoke, my rig is Denon hd2500, Citronic CD+G player, above mixer and an EQ. I've bought a little 4 mic' mixer from Maplin, runs off a 9v battery, however when I connect it up and switch it on, at anything above quiet...I get a lot of noise/humm from the Mic's which goes when I turn off the Mic' mixer. Any sugestions gratefully received???

Where to start, there is various things including the quality of the cables.
It sounds like you are over amplifying the mics, does the mic mixer have a pre amp?
If so and you are feeding this into the mixer via a mic input then what is happing the Maplin mixer is amplifying the signal and then the Kam is amplifying it.

Have you tied connecting the mic mixer into a line in on the Kam mixer?

Hmmm, tricky. Most of the preferred solutions will involve spending more money, and ditching much of what you've got. :( :( :(

All I can think of at the moment is to make sure the mic cables are well away from mains cables. Your mic inputs will be unbalanced, and that can lead to problems. I had some like that last week with a walk in job.

Unless you can get hold of something like an Alesis or Behringer desk really cheap, I fear you may struggle. If I think of anything, I'll let you know.

If it's the one I think it is, it should still be mic level output, but a good theory.
