i know this subject has been done to death and there`s loads of talk of why some members question and cant believe what some members can earn for a kids birthday party, but i`ve had an enquiry today and it just made me chuckle and to generally wonder is the UK economic situation this bad or are there DJs who can keep the overheads so low to need to earn so little. Any way, i digress, so the email read like this
"8th birthday party badly need a dj as mine has just cancelled - the one i had was charging me 50.00 for 2 hours and i really cant afford more then that"
I really wanted to mail back that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys and they let you down more often than not, but my hopefully professional attitude caused me to just bin the email and carry on get myself out there and working.

Cant see that being very Professional, ok fair enough you wont do it for that fee but id think a reply might be a polite thing to do, you never know what possabilities could come off it, the customer might be able to stretch to abit more if you explain "nicely" the monkey-peanut story.
No offence intended just abit Un-professional i think to totally ignore the email.

I was at my local Holday Inn on Sunday for a private function. Whilst at the toilet I noticed a sign advertising 'Hot Buffet and Disco £5 a head, Max £40 people' Made me chuckle as if the total income (apart from bar sales) was £200 what would the Dj be getting ??
Anyway roll forward until the end of the night. Duty Manager says he never seen people enjoy themselves so much (was an old folks coach trip and I was doing a race night and disco). He offered me 'future discos at the hotel as the DJ they has was unreliable and had very little equipment which all looked shabby'.
Remembering the poster I read earlier I did hint that maybe the hotel would not afford me for their functions. The manager got a bit excited when he announced they were increasing their DJ budget .....................To £35 :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek: :eek:
No the wonder they can offer £999 weddings :mad:

With all the threads about Djs doing gigs for silly money ( you know, the rates that would not even cover the costs for a gig) how about this idea.
Venue's insist on an invoice and a national insurance number, as most pubs do, this might just scare off the non lagit Djs.
Yes i know that this would not affect the private funtions but it might be a start, but it would take a lot of work to get Venue's to work like this.
Does this sound daft or not.

I feel the need to give a story from the other side of the coin to balance things up a bit.
A good friend of mine does discos including kids parties.
Last year he was booked by a lady who was having a birthday party for her son in the garage at home. She wanted some extra stuff to make it really special, so my friend borrowed a starcloth and some extra lighting effects.
His fee for this two hour kids party on a Saturday afternoon?
£1,050.

Yes they do, but they dont insist on a NI number on the invoice.

Not quite sure where you're coming from with this. If a client asked for my NI number, I'd be suspicious. As I'm responsible for my own tax and NIC's, it is absolutley nothing to do with the venue, and is probably a breach of some Data Protection clause somewhere.
If I were a Sid, there's nothing to stop me making up any NI number I feel like anyway.

Since it is your NI number, you can give it out freely when requested without breaching any Data Protection Law, however, if someone else discloses it, then that's another matter.

Some pubs ask for a NI number when you give them an invoice and they pay in cash.

I'd expect to see a Sigfreid & Roy illusion show for that sort of money in my mansion :lol: :p ;)

If I remember rightly, on top of his normal set up there was a large star cloth to cover up ther shelves in the garage, an extra laser and some extra lighting effects.
