What would you do?

I have a rather eclectic list of requests for Saturday's wedding, as it's one of those where the bride & groom have asked all guests to request one song each.

Most of the stuff is quite good, some of it is a bit iffy (although I can probably get away with it), but one of the requests is the last thing I'd play at a wedding...the Dallas theme tune! This is clearly impossible to dance to & is guaranteed to clear the dance floor.

I've already decided exactly what to do about this, and I'll reveal this later in the thread.

In the meantime, I'm interested to know how the rest of you would deal with this request. Would you play it or not? If so, when would you play it & would you say anything?

The first thing I would do is ring them back and ask why. There is probably a good reason and you can make a bit of a joke of it I'm sure.

Probably just before the first dance. Nothing much is likely to be happening then anyway.

I had a wedding last year where the Grandstand theme was up there at the top. It turned out that it was the addopted theme for the Stag Night after they found it on a jukebox.

Ended up being one of the biggest hits of the night.....

The bride probably doesn't know why the guest in question requested it, and I wouldn't expect her to contact the guest to say that the DJ wants to know why they have requested it.

But she might say, "Yes, that is on there because......"

You then find out the reason why, make the announcement and play it at the appropriate time.

I always contact someone about any requests if they are in any way slightly unusual.

Dallas is one of the most recognisable theme tunes ever so I can't see the problem with playing it. If someone has requested it then there is obviously some relevance to it.

As for not being able to dance to it, it's a wedding function. The obligatory embarrassing uncle will dance to anything! :D

Fair enough, Darren, but I'm sure if it had a special meaning for the bride and groom she would have mentioned this on the request list, so I think I'm pretty safe in thinking it's just been requested by one of the guests...probably for reasons best known to them.

couple of OPTIONS:

1) somebodys put it on there being stupid/(un)funny

2) fit it in during the buffet

3) hold back on it, if no one asks where is it, its probably a joke



id probably put it on an email disguised as something else to the bride - ie:

Hi,

Just to let you know I have sorted everything for the wedding and all your requests - is the Dallas Theme tune serious?! just checking, but I will have it with me on the night anyway.

You shouldn't "dismiss" it Rob because it could clear the dancefloor.

You can't clear an empty dance floor mate, hence why you play it before you start in earnest.

I'm 100% certain I'll be playing it, for the simple reason that it's on the bride & grooms list of requests...and I'm very aware that lots of my positive feedback highlights & compliments me on the the fact that I play all their requests.

Go on Rob pick up the phone, I was asked to play the Baywatch Theme and asked the bride why? She just said play it as the last song and you'll see... the bride and her maid of honour swam accross the dancefloor which was something they had been doing since childhood. Eventually the whole crowd joined in, it was a riotous finish to the night! :)

Just to tie up this thread, before doing the gig I made the decision to play this song in the main part of the evening, but to choose a time when there weren't many people dancing, and to make a joke of it with an announcement before playing it.

This way, the person who requested it got to hear it at normal volume in the main part of the evening, and the worst that could happen is that I'd clear a quiet dancefloor rather than a busy one, which wouldn't look so bad.

This is exactly what I did, and I actually had at least a dozen people dancing to it...so it worked out well.

sorry Rob but if an unsual tune is on the request list there may very well be a good reason for it. Tony Scotts is a great example of the song having a certain meaning to people and may very well change what time of the night you play it?

I'm aware of that, Neil, which is why I encourage as many requests as possible...and play them ALL unless I run out of time.

Last night was a good example of this.

50 advance songs requested...and all 50 played (including the iffy ones).

Job done!
