Really felt sorry for this guy

We went to do a 30th Birthday last night, not a great venue and was told to expect only 40 guests.

We were setup by 7.30 expecting guests to start arriving, the man who the party was for, was being brought in at 8pm. At 7.50 there were no guests, at 7.55pm 3 guests arrived. at 8.05 the birthday boy arrived. He looked rather bemused at the lack of guests at his 'surprize' party. His wife looked horrifed.

By 8.30 a few more guests had arrived, a total of 12 people, even his own mother & brothers failed to show up. He put a brave face in it and the few people that were there had a few drinks and even danced occasionally.

They called it a night at 10.30 and left. Easy night for us, but i did feel really sorry for him, and for his wife who had organised the whole event and prepared a buffet for 40 people.

It is sad when that happens butas you say it is not your fault and it sounds as though you did the best of a dificult job if you had them dancing!

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago where the client arranged a last minute surprise birthday for her brother.

In all fairness though there were around 40 people including kids it just seemed a lot less because of the size of the hall.

The girls were all dancing and asking for requests whilst the boys acted out the skidding on the kness routine.

I actually had a good night except I overdosed on Coca Cola and made myself sick!

I said at the time to my roadie that I felt I was robbing them but I was reassured by the guests as they all said they had a great night and gave me some good feedback so all's well that ends well.

Yes...I had a similar one too. I felt sorry and embarrassed taking money off them. :o

At least your birthday boy turned up! I did one where there was about 60 people there and the birthday boy didn't turn up!

Not good when this happens..... I was booked for a large engagement, the couple paid top dollar as there was a 50 mile trek to the hotel, very posh, large hall, full silver service buffet, the works! Twenty people in total turned up. It is pretty sad and I felt guilty charging the full amount, but it is a business. I did the honourable thing and offered them a discount on their wedding! ;)

Yeah I have had a simlar experience it is very cringworthy. Mine was a double 18th birday party 1 girl only half her guests turned up the other only 3 guests turned up a very bad atmopshere.

This is one of the risks for any private party. Usually 9 times out 10 everyone turns up. If there is problems within the family it spreads like wild fire and splits down the middle; best way to make a point is not turn up.

I agree that does not give you the best feeling; but on the other hand we have to remain professional and complete the job.

i had a similar thing 40th birthday,birthday boy had 3 friends present,the rest were kids and family...total 36 people.held in a village hall with 2 rooms.

the lady running the bar did the catering as well she was told to cater for 150 people.

a lot of background music to begin with then started the main part of the evening about 10ish,to be honest it wasn't that bad as the teenage family members kept thing going with requests.

birthday boy came up to pay and i did feel guilty about taking all the money,but at the end of the day not my fault if all the guests turned up.

the following wednesday the birthday boy rings me up,my first thought he is going to ask for some of his money back.not at all said they enjoyed it that much he would like to book me for his daughters 16th birthday,seems the daughter liked the idea of being able to request song and them being played.

now i was in two minds weather to take it or not,i thought about it and agreed,a 16 year old girl is bound to have plenty of mates right.

guess what....just the same people who were at the previous party,plus about half a dozen of the birthday girls friends ,most even sat in the same seats,only this time there wasn't as much food and no bar.

very similar sort of night to the first,but they all enjoyed themselves.

I find that surprise parties can go one way or the other.majority are the good gig nights.

i did one a few years back for a suprise 40th the birthday boy who was a trucker went out on the lash after work with a work friend.
his wife could not contact him he walked into the bar at 10.30 and said what is going on here then
